Yes, He has been a vast improvement on LVG who was a vast improvement on Moyes. But Jose has reached his ceiling level with this side. No matter how much investment was put into this side, he would still play the same way and we would not have caught up with city. Yesterday was a case in point. If we had any change from last season, we would not have seen such inept performace once again.

Yes, I agree, he has improved our standings. But Jose cannot do anything more with this squad, while someone else can. The players we have are not duds, but they have been playing equivalent to Sunday league stuff quite often in the past two seasons, which is totally due to management.

He cannot provide what the fans want. Either good football or the league. He cannot do either. We would simply falter around with random good wins against top 6 sides (which incidentally we did under LVG as well) and some insipid performances like yesterday.
Jones/Smalling/Rojo/Lindelof/Darmian are duds. Shaw is a dud and Mourinho is simply the latest coach in a long line to bring up his terrible attitude and work ethic. Valencia and Young are 33 year old wingers playing as full backs. If you think another coach would do better than why did Pep spend 250m on a new defence? Walker/Mendy/Stones/Laporte/Ederson. Because he had Kolarov/Clichy/Sagna/Demeichellis etc who were all finished and needed to be moved on. so City were ruthless and did a great job in replacing them, our fans think Smalling is quality and Luke shaw just needs an arm around the shoulder. Madness.

Do you really think a new manager is going to come in and keep our defensive options?
Jose said Young is good for 50 games a season.

So clearly he rates him.

He also bought Bailly and Lindelof.

And we know he's a big fan of Valencia.

So Jose thinks our defensive options are more than good enough.

Boring Mou, Loui, or Moyes. Of the last 3 managers which style of play does the caf prefer?
All the same for me. If it's style of play you're talking about. Crossing to Fellaini has been the best weapon for all 3 managers. None of them have got us playing consistent attacking football on the ground.

Moyes was using Fellaini as a DMF here iirc.

He was.

And it was Fellaini's worst season by far too.

Ironic considering Moyes had him at Everton the prior season and he had a good season. Shows just how terrible Moyes was when he was the manager. He was a complete buffoon.

Remember that 4-1 defeat at City when Fellaini played as a DMF ? Now that was shite.

LVG was the one starting using Fellaini here up forward.

He said Young is good for those games because he'd planned to sign a CM/CB and RW and new the board wouldn't back him for more players. He didn't even get the CB or RW. Shocking

Bailly is good enough but can't stay fit, so we need someone reliable. Just because he bought Lindelof doesn't mean he's good enough, looking to sign someone else would tell you everything you need to know about how much he rates him. United fans seem like they'd rather say feck you Jose you bought him so now you';re stuck with it rather than actually address the problem.

I am also a fan of Valencia but he's 33 and needs replaced.

Exactly.

He's bought 2 center backs and neither are reliable.

Yes I vividly recall that game.

Valencia and Young on the wings. Carrick and Fellaini in midfield.

It was the eye-opener that Moyes was a terrible choice.

All the supposed duds you mentioned are defenders. Yet how come we conceded less last season and scored few compared to the top 6 clubs.

Liverpool and city had duds in defense as well, yet their style of play was evident under klopp and pep from the beginning. Even when they were losing games, their attackers would create enough chances.

Compare that to us, we don’t create chances even in games we win. I don’t believe this argument that we need wc defenders for our attackers and midfield to be coherent.

Our problem, under both lvg and Jose, has been no clear attacking strategy rather than poor defending. Defenders in all clubs have bad games, yet good teams compensate for that with the attack.

Even if we ignore the defensive errors made yesterday, just look at the number of chances we created in the first two games. Jose’s approach is outdated. It got him results in the past. I defended him till yesterday, convincing myself that I would take any sort of ugly win. But the more games I see, the more convinced I am that the approach is not going to take us anywhere.

We conceded the least amount of goals for a combination of reasons. First we have the best goalkeeper in the world who according to football metrics performed something like 12 goals above expectation last season, which just means that any other keeper we would have conceded 12 more but DDG is just that good. Second is because we have such poor individual defenders Mourinho has us playing in a defensive style or they get exposed.

As far as our attacking goes City and Liverpool play better attacking football because they have better attacking players. Lingard/Rashford/Rooney aren't going to compete with Aguero/Silva/KDB. Mourinho has been trying to rectify this by signing Lukaku/Sanchez before being shut down by the board when looking for a right winger.

Mourinho has been the best manager of the three of them, no doubt.

But in terms of the question you ask- arguably Moyes was closest to Ferguson.

Well, they do get exposed in any case as we saw yesterday. How does he know that we will be exposed if we start playing expansively. He never did try that.

Lingard Rashford and Martial may not be able to compete with the quality of KDB, silva. But do you thing they are not better than the likes of Brunt, Propper, and the kids from bradford city???... Seriously, these are just silly excuses.

He got sanchez and has absolutely no clue how to use him. In a couple of years time, there will be revisionism that he was also a dud.

If he had managed to create any semblance of attacking strategy, it would have been visible by now, 2 years into his tenure. If people are still making excuses for lacking a clear game plan after this long, its just baffling.

I agree that the board shut him down and its at fault for doing so, but I for one don't have no hope that, if he had got his targets, he would still have failed to make the most out of them. Just like with Sanchez, Pogba, Mkhi,Baily and Lindelof.

On point, this is his third season in and we concede 3 against one of the leagues worst sides and resort to hoofing it up to Fellaini once again. Enough is enough no one should be defending this miserable management anymore, he is truly making it depressing to be a Man Utd fan.

I have a feeling that this is his last season at United. I do not think he is going to win anything this year and is gone. He was brought to get instant success. We have not got that and neither have we played attractive football. Maybe it is time to go for the long haul and the rebuilding now.

So you don't buy the players he needs to implement his style, he begins to struggle as expected, then you don't sack him, instead opting to essentially waste a season?

This club is very well run. Hire someone who knows what the feck he is doing to overlook the changing of managers, sack Jose and bring in someone who aligns with those ideals, fully back the manager who comes in financially and hopefully reap the benefits of some sort of long term plan.

I'm really trying to understand this new wave of comments that is " he already bought 2 central midfielders" like when you buy someone you are pretty sure what the outcome is going to be since this is like going to the market and buy milk.

Sometimes i really think if most of this guys watch football or just go for the trends...

2 games in and we're already seeing the dreaded 'vote of confidence' brief making the rounds in the press. I can't take that as anything other than yet another ominous sign to begin the season...

The club feeling the need to comment on the Zidane rumors smacks me of the LVG situation to me where they came out and publicly denied the Mourinho rumors around the same time they were later reported to have been discussing terms with Jose

Jose's best before date has expired!!
United need a manager who can build a team not try to buy one.
The nucleus is in place, it just requires a steady hand and a plan.

Not sure where to put this. Horrendous stuff though. People who think the centerbacks are the main problem are so so wrong.

With Chelsea, it was the problem of Morata and Conte's defensive system. Sarri will get them scoring at a decent rate due to his attacking style.

As for us, this is something we all have known. Look at our goal tallies for the past 3 years. Neither LvG nor Jose have managed to get the best out of our attackers or adapt to their strengths.

When you start thinking that the likes of Zaha can walk into our XI, it summarizes our predicament.

Of course, even LvG got this backing initially. It means nothing if Jose continues to fail. I sincerely hope Jose does turn this around though, or this could become one ugly season watching Liverpool and City compete for the title ala 13/14.

Oh dear. Once upon a time we were the top scorers in the PL. It was De Gea really that we owe for our defensive record otherwise we would've finished 5th or 6th. If he's not the same this season we don't have the goals to compensate for that.

Why doesn't Mourinho try to make the players play high pressing, quick tempo football for a change ? I think the fans will be pleased to see that he is trying to adapt his football to modern football.

OK my bad but the crossing tactic has still been the hallmark under all 3 managers. The point remains. There's been no evolution in style of play for years. Everytime we get pressed we still fall apart despite the large turnover of players in these last 5 years.

Why would any properly run club give its manager an extension to his contract then refuse to back his judgment in the next transfer window?

They wouldn't. We're nowhere near a properly run club. We're an archaic organisation that has a non-football person making value judgments on the manager's transfer targets. Our club structure should have been reorganised and updated the second Fergie retired but it wasn't, apparently Moyes was to be Fergie mk2 and life was to carry on as normal with uninterrupted success. We're 5-10 years behind other top clubs in terms of structure and we're not taking more than minor steps to address that issue.

Why has Woodward got away with this incompetence for so long? Clearly because corporate performance outweighs performance on the field. As long as the bottom line of the P&L Account is healthy that's all that matters.

On the other hand, we play such a defensive solid formation because he fears what can happen if we open up. It's not fair to criticise the attackers when the handbrakes are constantly on, would the same players deliver less in a more attacking formation?

I don't believe they would.

The problem lies with the fact he doesn't rate his defence, that's why we try and protect them so rigidly.

Sir Bobby has been right all along. And there I was, jumping up and down like a teenage boy seeing boobies when United appointed Jose.
