Taking the next corner instead of Jones!
If it divided on party lines it would be 51 to 49
If flake abstains that would be 50 to 49
So they could afford one more abstaining and then pence gets the casting vote I think
Certainly close and for the sake of a week if they are confident the FBI investigation will be pointless then it might be worth it from the reps point of view
He didn't say he'd abstain he said he'd vote "no" … but if Collins and Murkowski follow too that will not need McConnell's input

Flake got the pressure off himself personally by allowing it to go out of Cmte., once it gets onto the floor there are plenty of options for him, depending on how many votes McConnell have already whipped together.

They can afford 2 defections anyway, so this doesn’t change anything in essence. One week investigation? Please.

Senators not understanding what the hell was going on was hilarious. Even Flake looked surprised. 2 hour rule... jesus...

They are going to find Judge and interview him....and if he says he and Kav were in the room with Ford then he is toast.
There's so much shit they can find. If I were Bret i definately would pull myself out. There is a huge reason they didnt want the Fbi to investigate

the fact there were 3 Republicans in that meeting last night was significant.

He is a privileged scumbag; bet he thinks he can get away with anything.
Its exactly why he was fecking Crying. Crying at the thought that his white, priveleged, preppy, "my moms a judge bro " , lifestyle could ever be questioned and brought down like this

They can only afford 1 no vote.

2 no votes and he's done if all dems vote no. I would back at least 1 of Collins or Murkowski (especially Collins) to vote no (especially if there is no FBI investigation).

Because it's a seldom adhered to by-law that Grassley took advantage of today. He had the stopwatch on his mobile running the whole time and paused it for recesses (aledgedly) and gave everyone a chance to speak towards the end to get to the 2 hour point to adjourn.

I think if he quits then there will be an investigation anyway... Might as well carry on and rely on trump and the republicans to ensure the investigation is a sham

What happens if he can't be found or just be ambiguous to the FBI? anyway, I'm sure he'll be well drilled by some hot lawyers about his answers to the FBI.

Why just the week? Surely, a thorough investigation is a right thing to do for both Brett K and Dr Ford and the American people.

Can always abstain and let Pence break the tie.

My brain can't get pregnant!
PTSD has nothing to do with this. PTSD in veterans is from combat, not from a specific person.
Are you being deliberately obtuse, or are you just fecking thick?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is she's a you get AFTER ANY traumatic situation, be that combat, car crash or accident, severe illness, loss of a relative or loved one or RAPE and SEXUAL ASSAULT.

Damn you keep posting proper bullshit.

The week thing is a last gasp compromise to delay the vote to get Flake's vote. Without it, Kavanaugh couldn't likely get approved. So the FBI/Dems/opposition have a week to move the needle or else he will eventually get approved.

He must’ve seen that Carlin bit and came away thinking PTSD is only an euphemism for shell-shocked.

Why only a week? Well, it reduces the potential for conclusive findings but gives Flake, Collins and Murkowski the political cover to vote Yes in the end. If anything it'd help the latter two for the big issue on Kavanaugh to be process (investigation etc.) rather than his legal rulings and political opinions e.g. on abortion rights.

I believe it should also be a moral concept. Like I said, I don't want Kavanaugh confirmed because I don't align with what he believes. But Flake would vote for him if it without any hesitation if it weren't for these allegations. Although I am more inclined to believe Dr. Ford, nothing has been proven yet.
You think innocent until proven guilty should be a moral concept?

How would that even work?

Wow! It seems Grassley cut it short so there could be no "binding" vote on the agreement to postpone the final vote for a minimum of one week. Instead we are left with a "gentlemen's and ladies agreement" which has no legally binding place.

The meeting’s final moments: (from the Guardian's rolling coverage)

The president wouldnt do that as the incentive is gone. Unless you're talking a local investigation?

A very clever political manoeuvre. Thanks for your explanation.

i.e. someone shouldn't be judged to have done something without a proper investigation, not just as a legal entity.

PTSD is only for veterans? Man, you just need to stop typing what you are thinking. You are making a fool of yourself.

And I’d thought I’d heard it all living in South Carolina.
Seems to me you two have a hard time reading. I said when it comes to veterans (specifically)

Why do you come here and think you're up to date with what we were talking about? Carolina tried to compare Ford's PTSD with that of a marine as an excuse for her not to have come out all those years ago with her supposed rape and accuse Kavanaugh for his supposed crime back when it happened (and thus the person who caused her the PTSD). Obviously a marine can't take "combat" into court. So the comparison is incredibly stupid.

A week is a long time in this situation. There has been new information coming out on almost a daily basis this last week. There's a good chance more negative stories will come out now.

Probably this has been mentioned but this thread is growing to fast for me to follow every post. Can't Ford go to the police so an investigation can start? Parallel to all this, one citizen vs another.
