Hmm. It'll be hard to get disappointed by this after s2. Will cautiously watch.

Like the sound of Mahershala Ali.

Stoopid, outdated Season 1 theories:

*What the hell was socially-unconventional & case-obsessive Rust doing mowing the lawn? Unless it was meant to draw a clumsy parallel between him and Errol?

*Who buys that obsessive Rust wasted years away from the case? Rust lies...

More rubbish from me, tv's Rip van Wankle:

Even though the show is basically a Western, I can't believe it pretty much ended up with: "Gee, I guess I got the girl (back)"; "It's a helluva tough job but someone's gotta do it" & "Y'know, buddy, I guess somebody up there's looking out for me after all...".

I loved it all but I must be missing something, because there's no way a show this scathing about male heroism finishes like that without the above being extreme irony & a pisstake of American tv/Western cliches.

I don't think season 2 is that bad but it was a large drop in quality from the first.

The good thing about TD is that you don't need to watch one to understand the other and I'm sure the same will be true of series 3.

I would actually Love to find someone who hasn't watched either and get them to watch season 2 first. I genuinely think that's quite good and doesn't deserve anywhere near the abuse it gets. It's just unfortunate it followed up the greatest individual season of TV ever.

Here's a few nuggets; Imagine them coming out of the mouth of a moody and serious Vince Vaughn.

“You don’t want to look hungry. Never do anything out of hunger. Not even eating.”

“You’re asking me if he’s that kind of guy. He looks half anaconda, half great white.”

“Those moments, they stare back at you. You don’t remember them, they remember you.” '

"Frankly, I'm apoplectic." "I'm feeling a little apoplectic myself."

"A good woman mitigates our baser tendencies."

"Your compensatory projection of menace is a guarantor of its lack."

Those lines about moments are like a Chuckle Brothers impression of Nietzsche.

I love the Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Gotham, Prison Break and so so many other shows for so many different reasons.

But True Detective Season 1 is honestly the best TV series of anything I have ever watched. It's incredible and utterly fascinating. Althought season 2 wasn't as good, I'm so so excited for Season 3.

Interesting that they're going with multiple timelines again like season one. Great cast, too.

Hopefully it's a return to form after the shocker that was season two.

Vince Vaughn’s attempt at brooding, serious acting was beyond laughable. It brought the whole show down.

I don't think it was just Vaughan, even though he was awful. Think Pizzolatto had nobody to reel him in this time and the whole thing was just so OTT in it's dialogue and "themes" as a result. It was a mess, and the story was way worse too.

The signs were there in season one but Cary Joji Fukunaga's directing and the performances of the leads made it far less noticeable.

Looks promising. I think a brooding True Detective style mixed presumably with issues of race relations in the 60s/70s or whatever could be really interesting.

That being said, the way Season 2 gets criticised seems to hide the fact that the last 3 episodes of Season 1 were pure bollocks. The ending in particular was god awful, and it makes you wonder if the whole thing wasn't carried by the actors and director all along. So it's hard to get too excited for something that has always tended towards being pretentious crap only reigned in by working with talented people. Hope Ali pulls it off.

Needs some more eye candy like in S1 though. Honestly Woody Harrelson is the luckiest man alive.

I'd struggle to even blame Vaughn - the writing was embarrassing.

Surprised they're doing another season of this. Presumed the second one had killed off all interest.

Liking the look of the trailer, though who can really tell how good it will be. I'm holding out hope, it certainly has the right vibe.

It's a different a story . They waited a few years so people could forget the embarrassment and are good to go

I know, but part of the appeal of the show in general was the good writing, storytelling etc. I was just surprised to see them doing another one when I presumed everyone had sort of lost interested in the general concept behind the show after the second season.

I seriously cringed when Rachel Mcadams said the dialogue about dicks and liking the girth more than the length or something. I could not imagine any self respecting actor to say that line. But no, Vince Vaughn was there to hold the mantle. What a shitfest.

Jeremy Saulnier, who's great, directed the first two episodes. The rest were directed by Pizzolatto and some fella from The Walking Dead, so they'll probably be horrendous.
Ouch, we're fecked.

I just rewatched season one this spring and I could do it again. Such a great piece of television.
