Is it true that Sky & BT charge £100+ just to install their boxes?

This seems like primarily a U.K. based problem isn’t it? From what I gather on here most people outside of the U.K. manage to get all the PL and relevant CL games under one package, as well as the 3pm games.

There is something very wrong when the country that the football is coming from pays the most and has the hardest time accessing coverage of the matches.
Not anymore. We used to all 380 PL games until 2 years ago because other countries complained about us being able to do so. Now only the US are allowed to do it. We show every match that isn't at 3PM. At that time we can show one game. For example there was a Liverpool and United match at 3PM the other week and it was the first time in our history that we didn't show United. It will happen once again down the line this season and the Liverpool match will be skipped then for the balance. The order of team importance is United/Liverpool-Chelsea/Arsenal-Everton/City-Spurs-the rest so if you're not a United or Liverpool fan there will be a few games a year that you'll miss.

We do however show all the European and Cup games.

We got the rights for Serie A this season and started to show more La Liga besides just Real and Barca and I've been watching those leagues more than the PL this season (6-8 games shown per GW) so if you got subscription with us you'll get about 20 games live every weekend and it's cheaper than Sky+BT.

Bt boxes are pre programmed from the moment they send it out, so if your on a 18month deal the box will run out after 18months and they cannot turn it back on, so you need to resub, and doing that cost up to £70 per box depending on the package you go for.

Sounds like the cancellation is more to do with free illegal streaming than the quality of Sky coverage or punditry.

Sky do a day pass on now tv. which is a tenner for 24 hours. That would be around 250 a year to see uniteds games. Assuming they show united 3/4 of the time.
You can get a 9 month Nowtv pass for all Sky sports channels for £179 using the below link. (Still expensive though it is equivalent to more than 3 months free at normal rates!) It was a 10 month pass when the offer first came out and I remember getting an email about it a while ago.

I have just found the link on the Nowtv forums and checked if it still works. Just sign in to your account and the link opens the payment page. No idea how long it will last though?

Thanks for that but that is for uk customers only. I can get a month pass for 40 euros which would be 400 a year for the ten months of the PL. Would not bother getting in the summer when the league is not on. Still very expensive. I am based in ireland.

You should get one of your mates to split a subscription with you. Think you can run 2 boxes on one account at the same time?

If it was only football i was interested in i'd have cancelled my sky years ago as i can watch most games i want by streaming. It's the cricket and golf coverage which keep me a customer and when BT bought the rights to the ashes down under a couple of years ago, i phoned sky to complain and they halved my bill.
How ranty were you? I want to keep it for film, other sport and what have you too, but I'm not the best at haggling.

Sky Sports was such a big part of British footballing culture and history we will never have anything like it again.

Its easy to forget but we were absolutely spoilt once upon a time and its a shame how much it has declined.

We had Keys and Gray,Fanzone,Player cam.
Shows like The Premier League Years,Soccer Am and Soccer Saturday.
The transfer deadline day announcements.

I miss those days.

If sky can get the CL again I imagine they'd stick at least one game on Sports Mix, which was/is on free view I think.

Would be so much easier if BT and Sky could both have the rights, then there would be actual competition.
Why would you do that though? Give rights to both, more competition, lower prices, less money to bid with... Can't see quantity of subscribers making up for it, it's a pretty mature market.

I use IPTV now and it's brilliant. £15 a month and I get every channel available. Reliability is 99% and any problems are usually sorted by restarting my box.
Wouldn't pay Sky's prices again

That’s not a bad price for just sky sports, much less than what I’m paying for my tv subscription because they make you buy all sorts of other bundles in order to get HD and such. You can’t just pay for sports and nothing else but looks like you can on Now TV.

What’s the steaming quality and reliability like? Can you watch on your phone / as many devices as you want or is it restricted to a certain few devices you register like Sky Go does?
The streaming quality is very good and if you’ve got a good WiFi connection it doesn’t lag at all; at the moment I use my PS4 for NowTV. For the normal SkySports pass you can watch on I think max. 2 devices at a time but if you have the SkySports Mobile Pass it’s only one phone at a time.

I wasn't ranty at all, i just calmly explained that cricket was the main reason i have sky and to find BT had got the ashes meant i was paying for something i wasn' t getting.
They passed me on to another department who offered me the full HD package for £49 a month instead of the 80 odd i been paying.
I think it was a 2 year deal so i'm expecting a price hike shortly although i'm sure i'll find something else to complain about.

Yes, but they can waive any of the charges.

I worked in a Sky call centre years ago and there was a ticklist of items you could discount or give for free, installation was top of the list. They would sell a full Sky package for well under half it's full price, sometimes more on the rolling promotions.

On a related note the Sky Mobile TV is absolute rubbish. I have a subscription through iTunes and it was working perfectly. Up until last month, now I have the problem described below, can’t get it to work for love nor money. Tried all the fixes and even rang sky. From a quick google search they have had this problem for years and don’t know how to rectify it, a joke. Here’s the description of the problem and suggested fix that didn’t work for me...

No reason for the PL to do it.

But the whole idea of stopping sky from having all the packages wa supposedly to aid competition. But that isn't really possible unless both BT and Sky offer the same matches.

In Norway you get EPL and about half the CL games for £36 a month. You do not get the FA cup and the Carabao cup. As there are two different big broadcasters in Norway you need to pay £30 more to get the cups, but then you also get the rest of the CL games, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Scottish PL, Eredivise, Championship, League One, League Two, Copa America and Jupiler League.

As a student I'm not gonna fork out £36 a month for just PL and a handful of CL games, so I usually stream it or maybe go to the local pub. The atmosphere is better than sitting home alone, but the beer prices are a bit steep. You get a lot more value for your money with the £30 a month subscription from the other broadcaster, but I don't have the time to watch that many games to make it worth it. Also, the madam really hates football

In the Middle East we just subscribe to BeIn and get everything. PL, CL, EL, Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A plus internationals and african club football. Thats one thing I don't miss about the UK.

BTW why arent all premier league games broadcast in the UK??

There is a three o clock blackout because they want people to go to the matches. They try and show the big matches on tv because those teams are popular. Especially united, liverpool and arsenal. Perhaps chelsea too. They are the most popular clubs.

Yeah. Its rubbish - sadly the EPL sells the rights by country and our politicians still believe that 3pm kickoff shouldn't be televised becuase it'll stop fans going! Well Utd has like 1 billion fans and a stadium of well less... its been monopolised for way too long, if you need a point in the right direction IM me!

Itll be the lower league attendance numbers that suffer if 3pm games were televised, not the big clubs.

For me personally I just don't watch enough football or sport in general to justify the sub fees. You have YouTube, PlayStation, Netflix, Spotify, reddit etc.all vying for your spare hours I just don't see how most people justify paying the 40 quid a month for sky unless you're an absolute sport fanatic.

I cancelled sky sports 2 years ago for iptv and never regretted it for one moment. Now I get access to pretty much every game around the world and every sport.

UK coverage will always be a rip-off while the ridiculous 3pm blackout exists.

It’s laughable that other countries have the choice of watching any match live while the local audience has to make do with whatever Sky or BT has selected to broadcast in 2018.

Modern media should allow for the Premier League to self broadcast without having to sell to any of the TV networks.

Having to subscribe to a “sports package” when you only want to watch football is outdated and not something the modern consumer is going to accept for much longer.

Is this a serious post? Almost all of those things were absolutely awful.

There’s an insane amount of football coverage available for free nowadays and multiple podcasts that have far better, more insightful analysis than you’d have got from the gammon brothers on Sky (who you can still watch on YouTube if you’re a masochist).

They say if 3pm matches are shown on TV, no one would go to the stadium to watch.

I just don't see that applying now. Games are on TV other days and people still travel miles to watch their team. Supporters like the experience of going to a game and will still do it. This rule was brought in when TV was a relative novelty, that doesn't apply now and they need to move with the times.

First off I have a subscription to BT Sports with VM and the 4k coverage of premier league and CL games is excellent. I also have an iptv package but it started to go blank when the footy is on for the 3pm games. Looked in to it on various forums and groups and it turns out ISP's are clamping down on it and blocking them.
