Hilarious how apparantly Perisic wasn’t good enough and then he helped fire his team to a world cup final
Messi couldn't do so. I suppose we should steer clear of him since he isn't good enough.

Look, Perisic is alright. Nothing special. I'm sure he could do a good-ish job for us but I would rather we get in more quality of we're spending a huge fee. Liverpool and City's wingers are far far better than him. Besides our manager already signed Sanchez who has been crap, and then decided to never play him on the right.

Half? what the hell? are you okay?
I sure am. I'm exaggerating but he's signed 8/9 players hasn't he? That's pretty much half of the usual 18-20 players you'd expect to be the relevant members of the squad and nearly enough to field another team.

Yeah, I seriously question posters that wanted us to sign Perisic and/or Willian. And apparentely still do even after the Sanchez-transfer. Which really should have put an end to that.
They are both 30 years old and would have cost a lot in wages as well as having to write off their very high transfer fees as asset depreciation. It would reduce any possibility we would have to make any major moves in the coming transfer market. I am not sure that they would even improve us, even if they are decent players.
We already spent a feck lot of money on old players like Matic and Sanchez, we cannot keep doing that if any manager should be able to turn this ship around.
Agreed. Both are very streaky players and Willian especially doesn't have the end product or match-winning ability we need. A genuine game breaker in the final third is needed and neither Perisic nor Willian fit the bill. This is not to say they are poor players but they are not the answer to our problems.

Yeah I know Lukaku is a terrible footballer and whatever he did last season and at the world cup doesn’t count. I dont know why I even bother replying to you.
Ahh, sweet cynicism. Don't blame me for using your post logic to make another, similar example.

He can be very good and incredibly useful. Think anyone who watched the world cup seen that.

Not sure he was worth anywhere near the money that was being quoted though. He looked like a player that would flutter between first-teamer and squad player to me.

It's not shit, but it's got a lot of holes.

Id say Mourinho is culperable for Bailey and not playing him, and Fred so far but he's barely had half a season.

Fact remains he needed to invest more and hasn't. Why? Feck knows but it's not solely him. Our transfers are broadly a farce for as long as Woodward is around.
Fact also remains that he has invested plenty and been a failure. And that the transfers and player/team development under Mourinho have been piss poor. And no amount of blame shifting will change that.

Woodward himself has been poor. He's hired three disappointing managers now. But that doesn't change Mourinho's failings.

I think he could have been good for us. Or he could have been average. Either way, never wanted him at the club. We should aim higher.

I think he helps us carry the ball from deep, offers high work rate, can play on both sides, is very direct, offers good delivery, is comfortable both on the inside and outside, and added bonus of height. When fired up he can be a real asset. I cannot see many that would be as effective as him under Jose.

Anyway, it’s gone now.

The squad isn't good enough, whether it's Mourinho, Jesus, the prophet etc etc we will not achieve much. We have so many average players that need shipping out to bring in better ones. We don't have ANY world class defender FFS, not a single one, we don't have a true captain, De Gea and Pogba are the only players who would break into other teams' lineups. The two managers that we had were so shit. Look at the recruitments they made and how much we suffered to do a proper transition from all the deadwood we have.

You guys want United to compete on all fronts despite NOT having a good squad, who the feck you think we are? Rebuilding takes time especially with a giant like United, we all criticize and talk shit as if our squad is able to compete, it is NOT. Until we clear out the deadwood and replace them with decent players we will not achieve much regardless who the coach is.
@VP89
If anyone argues that this is a good squad of players then that is wrong & potentially biased.

However - it does not take a particularly high bunch of capable players to play as a solidly interactive team.

These same players that we see right now have previously been more team orientated under different managers & even under Jose at the start of his tenure and in my opinion has been becoming more and more individualised as the seasons have gone on - from LVG's last season to Jose's 3rd season - this is obvious & this includes a lack of a team orientated game plan. A lack of teamwork can limit the ability or capability of a lot of our players individually. On the other side - individually capable players like Zlatan hardly need players around them to do their job for them.

If that is not to be blamed on Jose - then who is? Players that he himself has bought in line with his 'ethos' ie the physical types of Matic, Lukaku are looking more individualised and distinct from the rest of the team compared to everyone else - whilst also Being showed clear favouritism by the manager.

The players are rubbish but ultimately Jose's individual tactics that have in history benefitted the selfish individuals such as Zlatan, Et0'0, Robben, Ronaldo, pepe, Ramos, Lampard the goalscpring Am, Balotelli etc etc have been great for Jose getting them to mind their own business on and off the pitch - but players like that would only very rarely make it in a team orientated team such as Pep's Barcelona as seen by Zlatan failing there & Eto'0 being chucked out after a year.

Ultimately United have historically been a team and an army of a modified belief. These bunch of individuals playing in a football formation will never be good enough for Manchester United. The players will no doubt change because some are not good enough to play here at old Trafford - however a mistake of that would be Jose getting himself a bunch of individuals that are hesitant in being able to even make 5 passes along each other.

We deserve better than Mourinho & his ability for success is not all that much valued by some of us.

Lukaku helped his team reach the semis and finish 3rd, but look at him now...

Perišić had a great WC, but if you're watching Calcio football you'd know he's been dreadful this season.
And Giroud or Lord Eder helped their teams win the WC and the Euro, it doesn't mean that you want them in your club.

I'm currently in Ghana travelling.im drinking with some locals and shooting the breeze about football. These guys are like "what the hell is happening with Man United". They aren't fan s,but they see the rot that is and has been setting in. They're Real Madrid fans, but they can't believe how we have fallen. Everyone worldwide is seeing this decay.

Our transfers are broadly a farce for as long as Woodward is around.
There might be some justification for criticising Woodward over the signings we don't make, but he's not to blame for the one's we do make that don't work out. His focus is on the club as a business, and it's entirely reasonable for him to question significant spending requests.

Let's take the example of signing a centre back: Mourinhi has already signed two, and presumably provided his justification for signing those specific players, and we already had three on the books, none of whom it appears we made much effort to sell. A year later, Mourinho is asking Woodward to fund the purchase of yet another centre back, again with little evidence of trying to offload any of the five already in place. Is Woodward simply to accept such a request on trust, and assume that this time the manager will have made the right choice? The success of signings in the Mourinho era has been at best patchy: if Woodward is reticent about sanctioning new signings, then that is both understandable and appropriate.

It's right to back the manager at the outset, and for as long as he can demonstrate that his judgement on transfers is sound. It is definitely not right to back him unconditionally. Having said that, if Woodward no longer trusts Mourinho to make sound decisions, he should be looking to replace him.

This "squad isn't good enough" excuse is such bullshit and I'll tell you why.

Jose started out with the golden boy in Martial, England's most promising prospect in Rashford, Mata a PL and CL winner, De Gea the best keeper in football among others.

He then proceeded to sign, at the time, the highest valued midfielder in football in Pogba who was in the FifPro World XI the previous season. He signed the Bundesliga player of the year. He signed the 3rd best young CB prospect in La Liga after Varane.

He signed Sanchez, who was the best player in the league in 2016-17. He signed Fred, who City also wanted to play in midfield. He got Matic, a 2x PL winning CDM.

He's got a strong squad he just fecking sucks at using it. So sick of this bs excuse for his failure.

Liverpool is playing two academy kids in their back 4 and a LB they bought for nothing from Hull.

Ya. Hype up every player so that you can make a point. Agree that several players have regressed under Jose, but the hyperbole in this post is hilarious.

Martial never showed consistency, Rashford is overhyped by the english media as is every other english player, Mata was never the same Mata from Chelsea.

Mkhitaryan is not suited to the PL regardless if it Jose or not, he hasn't showed the same quality he had in bundesliga even when playing for a different club/coach, he just didn't cut it, pretty much like Kagawa.

Bailly has been injured frequently. Sanchez is off form. Matic played almost every game last season and had a world cup and is almost 30, no time to recuperate or rest.

Our squad is not good enough, we can field a decent squad of 11 players but we have 0 depth, Pogba gets injured we are fecked, Martial gets defended properly we can't create.

Depth comes from having a sustainable list of players who can do their job properly, we do not have that YET.

I am not saying Mourinho is the best one out there with his decisions but you cannot take out the fact that our team is not good enough as a whole and changing it requires time.

Changing it does require time but it also requires better tactics, coaching, improving players and having some kind of rapport with the squad.

Jose is failing in every regard, a new manager who can coach modern attacking football and inspire the team could make a lot of our players look better. Of course some would always be deadwood and need to be moved on but there is so much room for improvement.

There is no progress, no signs of improvemen, no style or patterns of play emerging and this is in the third season. Nothing Mourinho is doing suggests time will make slightest bit of difference.

If he cannot understand that Matic as the holding midfield player is not working then he is blind and cannot see beyond his nose. For that alone he should be sacked.
Of this squad Jose has already bought 8 players and only Pogba is working on the pitch and even that is rarely. The players he bought does not seem to have worked out. So even if he buys another 8 more what is to say it is going to work? Any other decent Manager would get a lot out of this squad. A manager who knows how to get them to play football.

Nope. We'll tell you the manager is naturally responsible for building this supposedly "shit" squad, and making it play to a decent level. Which it isn't btw. We're nearly a mid table team this season which isn't a situation you can make these lame excuses for.
No. A bunch of shit posters will come out and question your standards of the club just because you have the balls to recognise the squad quality is not capable of much better than top 4.

It literally happened to me after the Young Boys came where a bunch of feckwits disliked the view and said shit like "you have embarrassing standards of the club" or some equivalent rubbish.

Fact also remains that he has invested plenty and been a failure. And that the transfers and player/team development under Mourinho have been piss poor. And no amount of blame shifting will change that.

I'm not talking about Mourinho in my post. I'm saying we still have big holes in the team which need addressing. We didn't sign a single right winger, we didn't sort out the right back position properly. We needed a better centre back. I don't buy this "Jose had a chance with Bailey" rubbish. Every manger earns margin for error.

There's nothing to discuss about Jose's inconsistent signing record at the club because we both agree on that. I agree he needs to get more out of Fred Sanchez and Lukaku this season. I think he's working Lindelof very well.

I've stopped you at the bold bit. Woodward should only look at the business side but sticks his nose into football talent matters which is an absolute farce.

Do you remember the statement trying to save face after the summer window failure? Saying some bullshit like all the remaining targets would have been 5th place at our club. Like feck they would have.

Yeah no average players have ever had a good tournament before.

Perisic is an average/good player, nothing more. If he’d improve us it wouldn’t be by much. Certainly not worth splashing £50m on but thankfully Ed had sense enough to put his foot down.

If we had actually got this CB & RW everyones on about, does everyone think that would have been our problems solved? Does everyone think jose would then have us playing good structured successful football? I honestly dont think it would have changed much at all. Maybe a little more stability at the back, but our over all game would still be the same.

In all probability he'd probably fall out with at least one of them and both would spend most of the time on the bench whilst we play hoofball. And he would find some other type of excuses.

No one knows what the impact would have been. But we do know that without additions to key areas, we shouldn't expect much better than top 4 for a good season.

As pointed out numerous times in different threads Woodward has not been involved in the actual transfer business since pretty much when we hired Mourinho. Yet this narrative somehow lives on. There are other people at the club that execute the negotiations both for new and current players. Woodwards role as CEO is pretty much to set a wage budget and to formally sign off on signings.
Mourinho is probably the manager in the PL that has had the most freedom to create his own squad within the set budget. After almost three years now he has no one to blame but himself.

I agree, but with what we have we should be competing for top 4. But with Jose that is very unlikely given his approach, attitude, tactics and awful man management. Thats whats causing most of the problems we have today

We finished 2nd with no wingers and Young and Valencia at fullback. Our most senior CB is Smalling who isn't even good enough to get into the England team because of his shortcomings on the ball. Yet somehow this team is supposed to transition and build play. Apparently all we have to do is not play Lukaku and play Pereira In midfield. How deluded can you get.

How are we supposed to stretch play. Who apart from Pogba is supposed to carry the ball from deep areas? Who is supposed to deliver balls into the box? Who is supposed to take initiative in defence and help pass through the lines? How are we supposed to shift the ball throughout the pitch by just asking the midfield to find the forwards? At least if we are going to hit longer balls and switch play we need those passes to be accurate and of a certain quality. We have a player in Pogba that can switch play with ease and apparently its ok he only has Young or Valencia to switch it to.

Maybe he should have fixed them problems in the two transfer windows he had like the guy across the road. Instead he wanted to give long ball enthusiasts contracts.

I forgot which pudit said this but hi point was if you have more than four players in a team under performing then it's the managers fault. I am thinking thinking that almost everyone is under performing for us

So Mourinho rejected Mourinho's targets in favour of a player like Varane? Woodward literally quoted a name of the defender he'd rather see.

I personally hate this "it's this person's fault" vibe that our fans have. Everyone is in a certain camp and the person they support is either 100% innocent or 100% guilty.

Is it not possible that nobody from inside the club is actually at fault? That we've failed to get some of our main/major targets because of external factors such as the player not wanting to join/someone else offering them a more enticing offer/the club refusing to sell to us/etc.

For example, Perisic has just admitted he almost joined Man Utd. There was an offer on the table but he was convinced by Inter not to leave. The narrative on here for the longest time has been that it's Mourinho VS Woodward and how the player's age led to disagreements and the club refused to get the player Mourinho wanted.

Maybe everyone at the club is trying their best and working together but for one reason or another things just haven't worked out in multiple situations, and it has now compounded into a bigger problem for us.

Maybe everyone at the club is trying their best and working together but for one reason or another things just haven't worked out in multiple situations, and it has now compounded into a bigger problem for us.
Players don't always speak the truth about what happens when a transfer fails. Just look at Moratas words when he joined Chelsea. The guy died his hair red and was widely reported to be intent on coming here. Then he claimed he chose Chelsea after when it's sort of obvious what happened.

Also when the CEO briefs the press that there were no proper centre backs available that can improve our squad, its sort of a pile of piss.

Why since Mourinho hired and not since LVG or Moyes ? I don't understand this logic. So according to your sentence he was getting into the way of both LVG and Moyes in getting their targets but not Mourinho ?

So, you believe the truth is more likely to come from "Reports" rather than the individuals' own mouths?

Do you actually think Morata chose Chelsea over us, and that's why he went there? Chelsea literally bougt him days after they failed with Lukaku.

Maybe he should have fixed them problems in the two transfer windows he had like the guy across the road. Instead he wanted to give long ball enthusiasts contracts.
Yeah because Jose would be able to spend 50 million plus on each defender in the backline.

He wants a CB that is good at build up and can dominate in the air? Something Lindelof and Bailly dont do. He isnt in charge of selling players either, maybe he did want the likes of Rojo sold. Darmian is still here afterall. Why do you think he was targeting ball playing CB’s then?
Your tongue is so far up his arse it’s embarrassing. You have to be related to him.

I get it, the squad wasn't good enough in the first place but that doesn't justify us spending 75m on a very average striker, 40m on a holding midfielder whose legs was already shot and 60m on two CBs who weren't exactly an upgrade to what we already had. I feel that Mourinho spends money just for the fun of it. He seem to have this mentality that he first buy a player, he then test them for a couple of games and if they fail he'll easily replace them on someone else. Which explains why he never sticks too long at a club. Who would want a manager like that?

What was wrong with what I said? It’s not crazy that he didn’t like Blind because of his size for a CB and that he is not in charge of sales. Darmian would be gone by now if he was.

He spent 72m in 3 defenders and the defence is shit. He spent 180m in CM and yet the midfield still lack aggression. The buck stops with the manager.
