We have a decent group of club ambassadors including Sir Bobby, Sir Alex, Neville, Irwin, McClair, Cole, Robson and others who should, along with Nicky Butt and maybe Kieran McKenna - be locked in a room and asked to put down in writing exactly the criteria for how Manchester United Football Club should play football.
First things first, a candidate for Director of Football should be identified. Such a person must have:
- Experience at creating structures and systems from scratch at a major, high profile club.
- An attacking approach to quick, modern and exciting football.
- A focus on recruiting, developing and playing young, exciting players.
Once that person has been identified and hired, they should be tasked with recruiting a manager who best suits their vision for bringing the club into line with the stated goals.
The manager (or head coach), along with the scouts, the academy coaches and all other footballing personnel should be answerable to the Director of Football who's performance is judged on how well we are meeting the three points above rather than wins or short term performance.
