Cleverley was far better at the same age really. Not sure what Mourinho was thinking :houllier:
Completly different players. Cleverly was surrounded by great players, and players mature differently - age is not a good comparison.

Did the basics right, clearly better than Fred. Don't think he will get many games under OGS. If we had a perm manager, I think he would be on.loan somewhere for the second half of this season.

Think he can become a decent PL level DM. He's never gonna have an expansive passing range or the ability to glide past people, but his defensive positioning and tackling are quite good.

He won the ball back which is good. He gets himself in position to provide another passing option which was another positive. However, is he going to do the destroying thing consistently well? I doubt it. If that's the case, he's just not good enough on the ball and not a good enough passer to make it here. He doesn't really have the ability to give himself space when a defender is on him, and he's not good enough at playing it forward.

Did ok much deeper as it focused on him getting around rather than creating.

Was our best midfielder by default, but dont think hes good enough based on showings so far. Also didnt realise he was 22, thought he was much younger.

I liked him in the deeper role, I see that being his position for us in the future.

A physical lad who seems technically comfortable on the ball. If he can build a bit of aggression into his game and play making abilities, we could habe a useful quad player
It's more preferable that he isn't even part of the squad for the future, would never get into the squad of any top team in the world ever, yet we wonder why we have been mediocre. We need to stop accepting bang average players, even squad players, just because they are academy products or we believe we are better than other teams, players like McTominay, as I said, would not be bit part squad players for any team considering themselves a top team, ever.

He's getting too much hate, maybe cause people connect him with Mourinho.

Not sure it was all down to him, but our midfield once Fred went off (and for a while before) was absolutely absent, against a Championship team.

Can't work out what exactly he achieves. As much as it's wonderful to have academy kids in there - and an early round FA Cup round is exactly when Fergie would have em there too - we definitely need to strengthen if he's part of the first team setup.

Perhaps too much vitriol in the wording from some, but he's clearly got very little to offer a team with the amibitons of United, he was playing against a side heading towards the third tier of English football today and did nothing to look any better than them.

Overkill playing him and Fellaini together, granted Fellaini came on as a sub.

Was not too impressed with perira either.

Yeah. I think our midfield depth is very concerning in quality.

I thought he did fine today? What am I missing? Checked whoscored and he's given MOTM there.

We all know he's a very limited player, zero passing range but will put in a shift and break up the play which he did. Blame Pereira and Fred who couldn't hold possession at all.

That's the thing isn't it, players who put in a shift and break up play every now and again are apparently good enough for United and it's a motm performance, the standards have dropped so dramatically it's incredible, if that was a motm performance I am genuinely lost for words

And that's why he is nowhere good enough for Manchester United. Our standards need to be higher than that

Some of the comments in here! It’s about McTominay, not Fellaini. Fellaini was actually quite solid in tackling passing and positionally.

McTominay was very average, lost out in 50/50 situations, made bad choices- he needs to step up.

People had already decided what they thought before the game started.

Had some nice tackles in the second half, and he isn't scared to get hurt. Not much else to say sadly

He was ok, didn't do much wrong. But that in itself is the issue for me, he doesn't do enough for a top club and plays it too safe. We now have a manager who wants players who are good on the ball and quick passers, so he needs to up his game big time, something I don't think he has in him sadly.

I would send him out on loan and see how he does until the summer. Playing a game here and there doesn't do him much good I don't think.

Not United quality at all IMO. I think he's a Championship/League One player. Agree with @PlayerOne to send him out on loan. He's likely not going to play again this season unless we get a weak opponent in the 4th or 5th round of the FA Cup.

Works hard and all, but he could be replaced by a brick wall in attack. He doesn't do anything on his own. The defintion of a water carrier.

This. Did very few mistakes and was one out of few who was efficient on the ball. One of our best without the ball.
Agree. We all know that McTominay is a quite limited, defensive-minded midfielder. For today he did just fine. People just can't wait for any chance to knock him down every week aren't they? Should just get a life.

And what has that got to do with todays' performance where he did his job?

It's pretty well known he's not good enough for us but people are criticizing him for no reason.

I remember the attitude towards Fletcher and Carrick in here ten years ago. It was similar. It is not only (very often) poor judgement, it is also extremely disrespectful and a poor attitude towards one of our own with a great attitude.

If anything it serves as a good indicator about people in here.

It's not for no reason. He's a poor player, hence the criticism. It's not a difficult concept to understand

The vitriol is a bit OTT, but he was very ineffective. He was non existent in the first half, got a bit better in the second where he at least put a defensive shift. On the ball, he was the worse of the three, even though he made fewer mistakes than them, but the passing was too simple. Even when there was space in front of him, instead of using that to play a more probing pass he will pass to the player closest to him, even if that player is marked by the opposition. Looked to get rid of the ball and pass responsibility, which was very annoying. The disappointment with McTominay is he was not sloppy, he was just very average.

I'm not as disappointed in him as I'm with Fred and Pereira, he doesn't have the skill level for this club or to be frank this league level. Fred and Pereira are both far more talented and they failed worse than him today.

Perfectly decent performance. Indeed I thought he was possibly our best out-field player.

You need at least one person in the team to do the dull, tedious stuff like win headers, steal possession, stay in position.

Equal most accurate passes (with Dalot), most key passes, most tackles won, joint top for headers won.

The team currently top of the league have a first choice midfield consisting of 3 work-horses in Henderson, Milner and Wijnaldum, yet apparently McTominay isn't good enough for United, according to tons of contributors on here; it's ridiculous.

Too soon to judge him. I doubt any of us has seen enough of him to make a proper judgement.

He’s not fast, doesn’t do any dribbles or stepovers.... all things that excite fans who are always calling for Perreira.

Can’t underestimate the judgement of both Mourinho and Ferguson who asked Jose to play him more. For all his faults I can’t recall Jose ever hyping a youngster for the sake of it

He keeps it simple in midfield and recycles the ball pretty well.

Just remember Evra and Vidic first few months at the club when they looked championship level players

Only a few months ago there was a Rashford is average and Martial fc label brigade on here.... now it’s Mc Tomminay being championship level.

Sometimes it’s how you use a player when you look at Oxale Chamberlain and Salah at Liverpool as well as Zaha vs performances at their previous clubs.

Let the poor lad go. Nowhere near the level required. Not even sure he's good enough for the championship.

He's rubbish. Doesn't do anything very well, just adequately, which isn't good enough to be a squad player at Man United.

He'll be playing for someone like Sheff Utd next season.
