They're not that bad, come on now. They've probably scored more goals than any team in the top leagues this season.

It's been better this season compared to last year
I might have overstated my point, but I just can't shake the feeling that whatever good comes off for Barcelona is the result of individual quality they deploy on the pitch. I feel Valverde's reign has produced the worst quality of football seen at least since Rijkaard's late tenure. Statistically they're still very good indeed, but if one happens to watch the games it's daylight clear something just isn't quite right.

Considering Coutinho (it's his thread after all), the fact that Valverde doesn't know what to do with him is a damning indictment indeed. At least give him a chance playing in midfield three in a settled lineup, and if it doesn't work after 4-5 games give up and revert to safe options. Unfortunately there is zero chance for that happening...

Cant believe we're linked to signing him, I think we should concentrate on getting some defenders first. And besides we have enough left wingers.

There’s literally no chance we’re signing him.

And why do they want to sell anyway? From what I recall, he’s been doing alright hasn’t he?

Valverde thinks of Cou as a LW, not a LMF (like Arthur, currently injured), and prefers Dembélé. Coutinho is basically Deco 2.0, that means a great link between the midfield and the attackers with 12-15 goals per season, but sacrificing pacing and total control in midfield. Rakitic ain't Xavi, and Busquets is nowhere near his 2011-15 peak anymore. Coutinho can't do it alone. That's why Valverde prefers someone like Arthur in midfield, basically the "Brazilian Iniesta" as he's called here.

Word is out that Coutinho isn't happy being a Top Sub.

He was excellent from January until June, and he was excellent at the World Cup, but he’s been underwhelming this season.

The problem is Valverde. Our entire team often look like we’ve never played together before. We have more individual quality than any other team on the planet in midfield and attack, yet we often look clueless going forward. There is no plan or purpose in our play, just constant sideways passing until Messi does something. We aren’t being coached properly.

I want Setien or Jardim.

Hopefully we've learnt from our mistakes of just buying good players without any thought on whether they fit our squad or not

Don't find any reason for them to sell Coutinho because Valverde doesn't play him. He costed them 140m and Valverde isn't doing any thing special that no other manager can do. They will sack Valverde before thinking of selling this shiny toy.

I never understood why Barca were so obsessed with signing him in the first place. They are the quintessential 4-3-3 team but, they were obsessed with signing a #10 who would not be natural fit in that formation.

I would absolutely buy him. At our most effective our front three should be fluid anyway. Having Coutinho, Martial, Rashford as a fluid trident would be fecking awesome. Coutinho nominally off the left, Martial down the middle, and Rashford off the right. But Martial and Rashford would interchange all the time. That wonder goal Martial scored against Cardiff came down the inside right channel. It’s all about fluidity. I would 100% bin off Sanchez to China, and replace him with Coutinho, a 26 year old world class player used to a high pressing 3 system. Not to mention the threat he brings from outside the box.

Anyway, never fear lads, I had a dream last night and in it the Gods laid out a simple road map for world domination for a net spend of only 100m. Here is it, prepare to be impressed and not at all sceptical:

Out:
Sanchez goes to China for 40 million of your finest quids.

Lukaku returns to Everton for 80 million to form dream partnership with Richarlison.

Mata (China) cheers Juanito - 25 mil

Valencia goes to the Travellers yard aka Inter Milan for free.

Fellaini buggers off to turkey or, hilariously, Barça. Bargain at 15M. Becomes retrospective **** hero.

Fred slinks off back to the Ukraine for 40M. Only a small loss of 12M. Returns to form. Says Mourinho ruined him as a man in the Donetsk Times.

Jones to West Ham 18M. Because West Ham.

Bailly to Sevilla 28M. Still highly rated in Spain.

Rojo leaves for Everton, 14M, after a bidding war with West Ham. Crazy bastards love him.

Darmian finally moves to Juve for 15M. Somehow, yet inevitably, becomes world class.

Total sales: 275M

The club then make a number of simple, and not at all complicated, signings at reasonable prices:

Coutinho arrives for 100M. Says the rain in Manchester is better than the rain in Liverpool.

Another player form a former rival arrives in Jadon Sancho. Dortmund selling for 80m plus another 30m in preposterous (Martial style) add-ons.

Marco Veratti has enough of France and joins the mighty Red Devil’s in a 70M fee. Raiola makes a 30M commission.

Nicola Barella signs for 30M. Mainly because everyone says he’s the shit, and I’ve never seen him play.

We trigger Alderweireld’s 25m release clause, but somehow end up paying 40M.

Koulibaly is bought for 75M from Napoli to form a dream defensive partnership.

We don’t sign a right back.

Purchases: 405m

Net spend is only 130M. Wage bill is down.

On the first day of the season we line up thusly:

— Coutinho —- Martial —- Rashford —

————- Pogba ———- Veratti ————

———————— Matic ————————-

Shaw - Alderweireld - Koubilaly - Lindelof

———————- De Gea ————————

Subs: Romero, Dalot, Smalling, Barella, Herrera, Lingard, Sancho

We fecking win everything.

You’re welcome.

Agree it was a very strange descison. I thought it was maybe to eventually replace Messi? Don't see where else he can fit in the team.

Not 100% sure if you're serious or not, one thing I know is you've been playing way to much FIFA or FM.

Why is everyone convinced he can't play RW? Is this another one of those Sanchez things?

We should be signing players who have historically been playing on the right wing, as RWs. What is this obsession over buying players who play in other positions and then claiming they can also play RW.

Don't know when he fell out of favor, or why. I think he'll be starting again in the business end of the season though.

Valverde's too conservative to play both Coutinho and Dembele, most probably. So he'll probably use Dembele as an impact sub - especially in the big UCL ties. Or I'm just making stuff up now

I think he’s an unbelievable player and it’s very strange to me that Barça haven’t really played him in a 3 man midfield with Arthur & Busquets.
It would be an incredibly light-weighted midfield — and they already have to compensate for lack of Messi's workrate and his free-roaming role as a team, it has been a huge problem for Valverde. Not that I need to point it out, but I'm not criticising Messi by the way, he's obviously worth it. It would've worked with Xavi and Iniesta, but Arthur and Coutinho aren't them.

He's played plenty at right wing though. As has Sanchez.

He is one of those players that is brilliant but doesnt score enough to be an attacker or defensive enough to be a midfielder. He isn’t playing badly he just had freak season of scoring loads and has reverted back to his standard output - ish. Maybe still a bit below. Hence they play dembele who keeps scoring. We will have the same problem. Is a front 3 of Marial, Rashford and Continio going to match the top sides goal wise? Rashford and Martial can match the output of Sane and Sterling or Mane and Firminio but both those sides then have a 30 goal striker plus the attacking set up to enable them to score that many goals.

Agree with most on here that we need to play players in preferred positions. No point getting him and then sticking him on the right. Lets go for an out and out RW please.

I'd sign him just for the first MUTV interview:

Interviewer: "So Phillipe, how does it feel to be a Manchester United player?"

Coutinho: "It feels amazing, this is the biggest club in the world and it's always been a dream to play here..."

Liverpool fans: "....."

Always thought Pool fans overrated him. Then after the WC and Barcelona highlights I thought I may be wrong. But now he's a sub? Very expensive sub .

I think with a 433 we're trying to play, we need a B2B and CDM upgrades, not a forward CM that we have in Pogba who is a much better player.

Could A Pogba-CDM-Coutinho midfield 3 work? Maybe against lower teams but I don't think it has the strength to stand against top teams. Although a similar MF kinda works for City.

Why can't he play in a 433 as the more advanced CM? It's not that hard, is it?

That post is EASILY in range of some of the more medicated among us. If you're not going to uses some white text people will assume you're one of the people out on day release.
