Vidic was not on Smalling levels of technical ability, but not far off. Rojo, Jones, Lindelöf and Bailly are all above in terms of passing and technique.
Maybe when he first got here, but Vidic improved that aspect quite heavily over the years and by the end was better than what Rojo, Jones and Bailly are now. Bailly is capable of being better of course, but even his passing is extremely rash and he's got no consistency there at all.

It did in the real world. Not in the Lindelof fan club land though.
Yeah no. No need for things like that, as soon as some player is being lauded its called a fan club. You saw things that never happened, nothing serious.

Step 1: Go to YouTube

Step 2: watch the highlights

Step 3: Engage brain

Anyone would think I'm saying Jones was better. I'm not. He was probably worse. Neither are good enough for us if we want to win the big titles again. Our defence has conceded cheap goals all season. And let's be honest we really should have conceded at Newcastle n Spurs too, especially Spurs.

I honestly can't believe how far this Lindelof hype has gone. He's definitely improved from the horror show stuff of last season but he's nowhere near as good as he's being made out to be in here.

Go watch the highlights of that second half and tell me you think he defended well.

I watched it.
He defended well.

The problem of the YouTube watching fans is that as they don’t watch whole matches they have no clue what really happened.

Exactly, it is not Lindelof's defense work the editor thinks of when he chooses the highlights he wants to show on YouTube. If you do not understand this, and think it is proof of a player's performance during a whole match, then it also explains the distorted perception of reality.

I watched the game and in fact have recorded it and watched in many times. Yes Ali turned him once and Kane did too but that is it as far as that is concerned. Any decent striker is going to get one or two chances against any defender. Especially when defending with backs to the wall like we did against Spurs.
Their defence was turned by our attackers too. It is part of the game.

He defended well.

DDG had to make more saves than any goalie this season in one game.

Spurs had at least 3 Fantastic chances that were down to Lindelof alone. Alderweireld, Kane n Ali all did him and should have scored.

Defending well has come from us escaping somehow with a CS. We didn't defend well in that second half one bit. We got lucky.

I watched the game too. I merely pointed out youtube as.i didn't think he'd want to re-watch the whole game.

The chances and defensive mistakes are there to see. We got pulled apart that second half, Lindelof included. Stop deluding yourself.

Of course we got pulled apart but this is a team game and if we cannot defend from the front and in the midfield then the central defenders are going to come under the cosh. Especially against a top team like Spurs where they had Kane and Son. I would be amazed if they did not beaten a few times.

Had 3/4 of them gone in which they could easily have done....let's not kid ourselves here......would you all still be saying how great he was? That's the point.

No everyone would be saying we need a new defence instead. Spurs poor finishing and great keeping has played it's part.

I don't think we looked very good at all that second half. The entire team and the defence too. It was hard to watch at times.

Evaluating a match from bits’n’pieces and you miss the context. In this case anybody who saw the whole match could see how Tottenham attached wave after wave last quarter of the match. And before that it was already an attacking kind of game which lead to many chances in both ends. When Tottenham attacked the way they did the last part of the match, it is impossible for one CB to change that scenario. It’s a team effort.

He was incredible. Many top saves.

No his save from Pogba was the best. He did one save while DeGea had many great saves. I would say David had three great saves while Lloris had just one that was fantastic.

As it was pointed here, being turned by Alli and Kane isn't strange cause those 2 are great players, especially Kane, against those kind of players rarely can a CB play a perfect game. That includes Lindelof. Nobody said he was great, but he was good.

I feel you’re getting overly hypothetical here. You have to go back 23 years to find a match where Spurs have scored 4 goals on United. You are changing a clean sheet and 3 points into that. Yes the ratings would be different.

I think you can take the best CB performance in the world and if you add 4 conceded goals by mistakes from him, it will no longer be the best performance in the world.

And no, they were not close to getting 3-4, they didn’t even get 1. And if they’d got 1, the match would take another turn and strategies change.

I don’t agree. He made so many good saves that I don’t know if the big save you are talking about was from Pogba’s header, Pogba’s deflected shot or Pogba’s toe shot :)

We may perhaps agree that there are different opinions about Lindelof's performance against Spurs, the topic is starting to become quite exhausted :boring:

This was immense.

It's funny reading he got turned by Alli or Kane.
I mean being turned over by one of the best strikers around currently and another very good player doesn't mean he didn't have a good game. No defender can play a perfect game in which he doesn't get turned over, especially against that kind of opposition.

This all day long. How some people think baffle me. Of course when you play high quality opposition, they will cause your defenders headaches no matter how good your defence is. This is normal and expected.

Sure we all remember Vidic against Torres. And Vidic turned out alright didn't he?

He's improved a lot and seems to be getting more and more into the tempo and style of the league with every match. Solskjær clearly likes how he plays, and tries to bring forth his qualities by playing him where he's comfortable. His biggest weakness is his aerial ability, but with time he might become better in that as well. His positives though is his calmness on the ball, his passing range and his anticipation. All things we need in our team of random defenders with random skillsets. Especially considering the type of tactics we deploy these days. I would of course prefer us to have the 'perfect' ball playing defender, but right now I think we should try to see the positives in what we have. I'm not saying we shouldn't be critical or overly praise someone, but try to recognize the quality they do possess and what Solskjær is getting out of them.

Man Utd 2:1 Brighton
Some of his long passes were fantastic. Proper ball-playing defender we have.

He has removed alpt of the mistakes he made at the start - but he has a lot of work to do still.

He sometimes doesn't feel like a complete defender playing in a defensive position.

MOTM. My favourite player right now. Cool and calm on the ball. Brings the ball out of the back superbly. Started to win headers in the air. Lads we have unearthed a diamond.

Was great for about 60 minutes... Like I was genuinely delightedd by him... But then he became really bad on the ball, which added to all of the panic at the back. Still, good overall though.

Jose unearthed him so perhaps that is his new role-scouting players but for f*ck's sake don't let him be involved with coaching them. Bodes well for Eric Bailly :).......

Shows a lot more composure than most would with Jones like a dog chasing a car next to him. Almost got an assist with that lovely ball to Martial.

He was very good, excellent on the ball and showed his strength today too. Turning into a very good defender overall, just needs someone good besides him.

Not overrating imo if I said he's in top 5 best defenders in the league currently.
