We should be all-in for Ferland Mendy, if not now, then in the summer.
Agreed. It's between Mendy and Tierney for me. Lyon will demand a lot more for Mendy though. We should be all-in for Ferland Mendy, if not now, then in the summer.
Just to put into context, looking at the Portuguese national team alone Cancelo, Cedric and Semedo are all ahead of Pereira in the pecking order for the right back position. That's not to take anything away from Pereira who's been very impressive these past few seasons but I wouldn't say he's "the best rightback around".Ricardo Pereira is arguably the best rightback around and can play further forward too.
His league form is. He's made the most tackles out of every player in europe this season, also one of the overall biggest ball winners (tackles + interceptions) in europe this season. Wan-Bissaka actually slightly beats him here but he's 2nd for a RB overall, behind Gueye also for the premier league so 3rd in the league in all positions.Just to put into context, looking at the Portuguese national team alone Cancelo, Cedric and Semedo are all ahead of Pereira in the pecking order for the right back position. We beat Tottenham with virtually no offensive assistance from either full back, and you are correct, we don't have a Kante or Fernandinho in our squad, so we have to be sound defensively as a back four, which we are not at the moment IMO. I've seen Shaw in the opponents box a few times this season, so I would disagree that he is not very attacking, but we all have our own opinion. Yes, Wan Bissaka was originally a winger, as someone has mentioned, so he probably does have the ability to beat a player, and get a good cross in, but possibly how Palace set up, he doesn't venture forward much, but is concentrating on being good defensively.Well you don't push both full backs up, IMO, unless you have a Kante or Fernandinho that will protect the 2 CBs and from counter attacks. I don't see Shaw as very attacking, so if he's our 1st team full back, we need an attacking outlet on the right - specifically giving us width. I agree they would still need to be sound defensively for games like you say, but they have to be good attackers and crossers, as our game is very much modelled on early balls now.
Are you using stats only to judge the player? His league form is. As well as some attacking contributions with 3 assists (joint most at his club) and 2 goals, including 1 against City this season.
International football is often about politics. Cancelo is good as well and he has also won the ball more this season than he usually would, but he's being compared to the player who wins the most tackles in europe so obviously he pales in comparison. Then theres the fact he plays for Juventus rather than Leicester, arguably a slightly weaker league and a much stronger team. But most importantly he's younger and had a high profile signing, the hype is behind him. The stats of actual contribution are not. He's arguably better going forward, but overall? No. He's not.
I'm using workload. If someone does more, brings more to the team overall, they are the better overall playerAre you using stats only to judge the player?
I have watched some of the Leicester games this season and I must say I’m not too sure if he’s even good enough for us. There are times where I’m impressed with him but most of the time I watched him there is nothing special about him and too overrated calling him the best right back around. I think United should aim for higher standard. But he got good crosses though.
You aren’t answering my question.I'm using workload. If someone does more, brings more to the team overall, they are the better overall player
No they cant? How can you tell me someone will bring more than someone who attacks well but also makes the most tackles in europe? You aren’t answering my question.
Everyone can say randomly this player will bring more, that player will bring more, this will bring more and he will bring more.
Yes they can, in your theory using stats or numbers will make anything possible to judge players who can bring more. In your theory, Butland, Fabianski, and May Ryan made the most saves and more saves than de gea last season, does it mean they will bring more than de gea. Stats is good but we need to actually watch the game as well to see how the team play and the player plays to judge if the player is good enough or no.No they cant? How can you tell me someone will bring more than someone who attacks well but also makes the most tackles in europe?
You'd have to lie to me.
Goalkeepers arent constantly active. And who is May Ryan?Yes they can, in your theory using stats or numbers will make anything possible to judge players who can bring more. Mat Ryan.Goalkeepers arent constantly active. And who is May Ryan?
Yes he does. Good playerMat Ryan.
Ohh so goalkeeper is exceptional in your case.
Ndidi made the most tackles and more tackles than Matic last season, so in your theory he offers more than Matic defensively?
I’m surprised you haven’t shout his name as a Matic’s Replacement. Based on “stats” you could judge he offers more, same how you judged Ricardo Pereira.Yes he does. Good player
As soon as one of those appear let us know.Wan Bissaka is again a long term signing. We need some one ready to start and offer us everything from day 1.
Imagine a peak Alves starting on the right.
I don’t think that’s the issue. They already have Carvajal and Odriozola so they don’t particularly need him and Hakimi won’t be going back to Madrid to play second fiddle to Carvajal who’s still only turning 27 this year.My personal pick is Hakimi. Yes, a bit on the younger side, but is the first pick for BVB on the right back/wingback (Could also play left). As many attacking backs these days he lacks a little bit in defending, but as an attacking threat he is absolutely great! The only issue is that Real Madrid might not want to sell.
I can see that. Also as good as he is and as much as I like his style/abilities, some may find his current ability a bit lacking if they are looking for a world beater, but then again it's not like United will get Carvajal right? (One can only dream). Also yes, have to wait, but I don't thin the side back position is THAT urgent. Valencia, unless something really turns around is done so we agree on that, I do however think Young both has much use and contribution still. His for is quite stable, but he isn't first pick quality in a CL winning team right now.I don’t think that’s the issue. They already have Carvajal and Odriozola so they don’t particularly need him and Hakimi won’t be going back to Madrid to play second fiddle to Carvajal who’s still only turning 27 this year.
The issue for me is that we’ll have to wait another season before we can get the chance to sign him which means another season of Young/Valencia/Dalot.
I kinda have. But he's playing further forward than Mendy at the moment so he's arguably not playing the same role currently. Mendy is the one holdingI’m surprised you haven’t shout his name as a Matic’s Replacement. Based on “stats” you could judge he offers more, same how you judged Ricardo Pereira.
He’s playing every week and consistently doing well. He’s ready to step up.Wan Bissaka is again a long term signing. We need some one ready to start and offer us everything from day 1.
Imagine a peak Alves starting on the right.
He likes a dribble. 9th most in the league of players in all positions that are regularly playingHe’s playing every week and consistently doing well. He’s ready to step up.
Whether he can offer the outlet we demand from our fullbacks though is yet to be seen.
Well, you have done it wrong if you judge players based on stats alone.I kinda have. But he's playing further forward than Mendy at the moment so he's arguably not playing the same role currently. Mendy is the one holding
I dont. I watch them and look at stats after the matches, because I'm human and therefore I'm prone to human error. Plus watching I'll be prone to confirmation bias. The things I thought going into the game, I'm going to expect to see. But if I thought a player I didnt rate wasnt winning the ball much, or is weak in the air, has 6 tackles by the end of the game or won 9 headers then guess what - the numbers arent lying and I will have to adjust what I think of said player.Well, you have done it wrong if you judge players based on stats alone.
Yeah he carries the ball well with his athleticism but not sure his passing/crossing has been seen enough yet, maybe I need to watch palace more against even teams. He’s a great defender though. He likes a dribble. 9th most in the league of players in all positions that are regularly playing
His passing could do with some work though.
He did well last season too, but we still decided to spend £20 million on Dalot, who has had half a season at the club following surgery. In that sense, Wan-Bissaka is a strange suggestion. He’s playing every week and consistently doing well. He’s ready to step up.
Whether he can offer the outlet we demand from our fullbacks though is yet to be seen.
So basically nothing a player has done this season can make them a target? Now that is strange. He did well last season too, but we still decided to spend £20 million on Dalot, who has had half a season at the club following surgery. In that sense, Wan-Bissaka is a strange suggestion.
Similarly, Ricardo Pereira is an odd choice, if I have the right player (at Leicester, signed in the summer from Porto)? If he was an option here surely it also would have happened in the summer.
We have Dalot. We made our choice. Play him. There are far too many mentions in this thread about him being for the ‘future’ and proposing 25/26/27 year old ‘stop gaps’. No point bringing him to the club with the intention of not giving him a proper run for about five years. He is 19 not 16, young yes but very much an adult. If he isn’t good enough then replace him, but it’s a bit early for that right now.
I never say you aren’t allowed to use stats or watching 1 or 2 games alone is enough. What I said was stats is good, but you can’t judge players based on stats alone.I dont. I watch them and look at stats after the matches, because I'm human and therefore I'm prone to human error. Plus watching I'll be prone to confirmation bias. The things I thought going into the game, I'm going to expect to see. Regardless of whether you tell me otherwise your eyes arent very reliable.
You're only looking at 1 number. I'm looking at all of them.I never say you aren’t allowed to use stats or watching 1 or 2 games alone is enough. I already mentioned this, stats is good, but you can’t judge players based on stats alone.
The numbers might not lying but numbers can play trick on you. People will question why Lukaku doesn’t start over Rashford when he scores more goals, but people who watch the games can tell which one out of two is more suitable to play in the system.
What all of them? You're only looking at 1 number. I'm looking at all of them.
If you look at all of them Rashford is playing better. Simple
What all of them?
So what’s your point now? My point is stats alone isn’t enough. But it sounds that you are so persistent to prove me wrong, we can continue this but before that I need to know what’s your point here. I’m not going to have long pointless arguments when both of us are having the same point of views.
The stats shows Lukaku has better touch than Rashford but everyone know Rashford has better touch than Lukaku, another way to say that stats can play trick on you. And you are just showing stats without explain why he’s more suitable than Lukaku.
Your own example. Yes the stats do show that Rashford is a better attacker this season than Lukaku. Being 1 goal behind doesnt mean much when he's ahead on everything else, and by quite a lot
Again, you're looking at 1 single stat. If the majority say the other player is better, thats what they say. Stop looking for 1 specific thing. The stats shows Lukaku has better touch than Rashford but everyone know Rashford has better touch than Lukaku, another way to say that stats can play trick on you. And you are just showing stats without explain why he’s more suitable than Lukaku.
I can even go on talking about this but you need to answer my question what’s your point here? Are you just being salty that you know that stats alone isn’t enough so you are just trying to make this as pointless argument?
I just mentioned two, goals and touches. How is that a single? You are just showing stats but how is that stats supporting our point that Rashford should be playing ahead of Lukaku? You can’t just say, hey there are more green on Rashford stats that means he’s a better option.Again, you're looking at 1 single stat. If the majority say the other player is better, thats what they say. Stop looking for 1 specific thing.
