What's happened to Antonio Valencia?

Maybe the club were hoping he would do a Neville and retire gracefully rather than force him to leave as his performances have not been up to standard for a few years - this year enough is enough. Simple really

There was talk of him coming back for pre season out of shape. He hasnt been great for awhile, but he's always been reliable and consistent, so I wonder why it's suddenly fallen apart for him.

They didn't have the ability to keep the likes of Villa, Silva, Mata, Albiol etc. Really hard to compete with the best teams if you constantly are forced to sell your best players.

I think he’s struggling with his build. He really needed to do what Ronaldo did and get lean and cut, instead he added more bulk and it’s just not suitable for this game when you don’t have pace to complement it. His contract is running out and he’s not justifying any sort of renewal.

It’s the correct decision and offering him a new contract wouldn’t do him any favours.

I liked him always, he’s been a fine servant to the club, but we should have moved on a year ago. I hope he finds a decent club to finish his career, wish him all the best if true.

33 isn't bad, a few legs last longer but most don't make it that far at top level.

Regulars of the transfer forum please note.
Aye, but he’ll be 34 before next season so I think it’s time to move on. He’s been a good servant for United though.

He's been past it for a couple of years now. Good to see that Ole is prepared to be ruthless, if its true. Young next please.

He's also been a player whose lack of confidence is apparent. Now he is certain he can no longer beat a man, he no longer tries. His teammates have been ignoring him in games for the best part of 18 months. It's obvious when you watch games lives that he no longer offers what a full back should.

He’s garbage and has been for years. He only survived because of the mess we’ve been in, and the fact that he’s now been told he can leave (allegedly) suggests we’re actually on the up. Even if he hasn’t been told he can leave, he’s clearly well out of favour and will probably not be here next season.

Young next please.
This is the kind of dumbass way of looking at football I hate. As soon as somebody is past their peak, ship them out and bring in the latest hipster player from a foreign league.

No understanding of what Young has brought to the table..... in a time when we are desperately lacking in leaders, here is a player who has stood up to be counted. Gives everything, has experience as a United player which you can't buy, and he is doing well at full back. It wasn't too long since he was one of the best England players at the World Cup, when his leadership was also important. In an era of snowflakes, Ash Young definately isn't one of them, and he certainly shouldn't be asked to leave.

His physical decline was evident last season too. He went from being one of our best players in 16/17 to below average in 17/18. The trend has continued this season and we need to say thanks and farewell.

Just looks a bit burnt out. Served us tirelessly sprinting up and down that right touchline for 9 seasons. He has also put in great effort for us since converting to right back during a meaningless era success wise. A great servant but he has declined both in terms of skill and his physical attributes (which were tremendous).

Wish him very well but its not surprising that he may leave.

He has been on the decline for about five years. Cannot take on opposition full backs, gets a nose bleed if he passes the halfway line. Never gets around the back, and has given up completely on crossing. Now he operates in static holding role, passing only sideways and backwards. If anyone tries to take him on, he will clatter them or bundle them over. Completely finished at this level. I cannot see him having much more of a career now. Good luck to him.

Looking over my shoulder.
He had been in decline for years
16/17 he was up there as one of the best fullbacks in the league. Walker talked of Valencia as one that inspired him in terms of consistency. That season he would still outpace players like Sane.

He started the season of 17/18 ok, but then faded badly. To me, it looked like he carried an injury, and there have been talks about a knee injury. I'd say his decline started last season, and it looked like he had to play through injuries, much like Evra in Fergie's last season.

This year, he has been well below par when played. He still looks fast enough when he gets going, but his engine is not what it was, and he's lost agility, which wasn't great to begin with, again the knee issue.

As for the taking on players bit, I've argued many times that very few fullbacks actually do this. Valencia and Evra spoiled us in that regard.

Any concrete source?

He needs to be phased out for sure; hope he gets a proper send-off and testimonial. Model professional and was always dependable. But his time as a starter should come to an end.

Basically, his body and mind have slowed down. Great servant over the years and one of the nicest guys around. Even sacked his agent during discussions over renewing his previous contract he was so proud to be playing for United.

Who picks the team?
You can’t just pick someone that is no longer good enough out of sentimentality.

At least Ole is not ripping Valencia to shreds through the media like the last so called manager did.

He should never have been named the Captain in the first place for a start. Free to leave sounds about right given his decline in the last 2 years.

The leg break changed him for a start, not being allowed to give the ball away under Gaal or make any mistakes at all under Mou hasn't helped him though.

Pass wide right to Tony V, Tony V runs 20 yars down the touchline, stops, shuffles, passes the ball backwards. And repeat.

Discraceful way for Ole to treat the captain and one of United's greatest number 7s.
I assumed there would be white text.

I think this will be his final season. He doesn't have a lot to offer at the moment, looks to have lost his explosiveness.

If someone needs white text after the second half of that post, they don't deserve white text.
Genuinely with some of the opinions I see on here, it's not always certain who is playing silly buggers and who is just a daft cnut

I think it is more mind over body. He's still very quick and strong, but the sharpness of his mind has slowed alarmingly to where he's a danger to other players and himself.
He can't decide whether to take players on, and a lot of the time he's caught in two minds and loses the ball. He can't time his tackles. He was being touted as one of the best fullbacks in the prem only about 2/3 years ago. Maybe a run in the team might sharpen him up a bit.

One of the most frustrating players to wear the shirt in the last 10 years, awful at attacking bar one good season after he joined, yeah he changed his game to become a right back but like others have said should of been moved on 1-2 years ago.

I’ll never forget that free kick on the half way line he took but all he did was turn back and pass back to De Gea, OT was ringing with boo’s

Anyone got a link?

If you think he's a good enough fullback for us then perhaps football isn't the sport for you.

He was a squad player in his preferred position. He's now 33, playing out of position, and frankly costing us goals. He might run up to the referee every now and then but we need much, much more from our players if we want to resume challenging for titles.

Agreed, with Valencia & in all likelihood Darmian both leave before next season. I’d keep Young around for another, 1st of all he always puts a shift in, experienced player & also, letting 3 (AV, MD & AY) would leave United with only 2 young Full backs in Shaw & Dalot.

Keep Young, bring in another Full back so we have 4 (unsure if a Young or experienced FB would be best seeing as we have Shaw & Dalot). Then after the 2019/20 season, replace Young. Transition over whole sale changes in 1 window. United also need a CB & 2/3 CM as we have almost no cover Matic, Herrera Pogba. Fred could go, Fellaini could go, Mctominay go on Loan. Why would we want to create a lot of work in having to buy 2 FB’s
