If fans on both sides could learn to eradicate words like hipster that would be better.
What word would you use to describe people who say it's not even close and anyone who doesn't see this knows nothing about football? Vast majority of the I know more about football than you type fans are on one side. I'd say calling them hipsters is being generous.

Outside of heading, what facet of the game is Ronaldo supposed to be better than Messi at?

No need to use a word at all. Your post would have carried the same message.

What about ‘people with a different opinion’?

There's a gap technically but you cant ignore Ronaldo physical prowess, movement, ambidextrousness l, heading ability.
But in the end, Messi is a more efficient goalscorer (as evidenced by stats), and obviously a superior playmaker/creator.

Too much weight is put on overhyped cup trophies, and this skews the perception. In fact the whole "big games" theory is flawed. In most of the direct match ups Messi has been more successful and often the best player on the pitch by far.

BTW, serious talks aside someone on here once talked about how even the name Messi just spoke art/genius like Picasso, Maradona or Da Vinci and I was just thinking yeah Italian origin names sound artistic so that's a "factor" now..

What about being better technically, scoring more and winning more titles.

When those 3 things combine?.
Promised myself I wouldn't come back and I am a neutral for now on but... wasn't this your (Messiahs) entire line of argumentation to refute anyone who used this as a valid point for Ronaldo being on this discussion?

I don't know what's so hard to understand, this was the original comment

Being a better technical footballer doesn't make you a better football player.
We're not talking about Guti vs Eto'o here and saying Guti is the better football player because of his technique, saying that Messi is better than Ronaldo because he surpasses him in other areas while being more technical doesn't mean I'm falling in the same pattern Ronaldo fans used to claim he's the superior player.

But I am not talking about this specific comment. I am saying I had the chance to read here a lot of times when someone said Ronaldo was better because he scored more goals and won the Champions League that argument wasn't valid.

That's something all these hipster Messi fans badly need to learn.
That argument would maybe suit to a player like Neymar, Ronaldinho, Robinho or the young Cristiano but not to Messi whose style is the exact opposite. No "unnecessary" skill moves but clean technique and body feints. As efficient as it gets. No dribblings or passes just for the gallery.

Concerning style spectacle alone there are quite a few footballers who are easier on the eye. Thiago, Isco, Neymar exemplarily. But none of them uses his abilities as efficient as Messi.

No I do not think that at all and certainly won't "realize" such an idiotic idea. There you go with the Messi brigade again, the insistence of their opinion being facts. :houllier:

Well said!!

You are entitled to believe Messi is better, but please don't make up facts. He wasn't even 2nd topscorer in WC 2014. In fact he didn't score a single goal after the group stage and finished on 4.
Fair enough, he was leading for a while, and when he scores them is irrelevant, they still went in, and he was still player of the tournament.

What stats are those? The shots to goal ratio thing? How many times do I have to explain dribbling until you get closer to the goal does not make one a more efficient goalscorer!

If big games theory is flawed, so is head-to-head theory, it's not like they play in positions against each other. Most of the time it's just how their team mates.

He was voted the player of the tournament, whether he was is very debatable.

When he scores the goals in very relevant, the fact is he only scored against such great sides Bosnia, Nigeria and Iran and couldn't against the likes of Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany.

336 pages of this shite but has anyone shifted their opinion from Messi to Ronaldo or vice-versa?

This thread needs to be nuked, just same arguments repeated on every 3 pages with no willing to concede at any point.

I’ve never posted in this thread, but for me it’s Messi, and not a super hard decision. I respect that others see it differently.

It's only close if you look at stats, but if you actually watch the matches you'll know that Ronaldo is ahead to Messi.

I feel like you know this has never been the point of this thread.

I think of it more as the caf version of the Phantom Zone, where the worst argument in the universe is contained until its participants are freed to wreak havoc upon us all.

When Ronaldo can appear 4 times in a game and scores 3 goals vs Atletico I don't read you here calling "flawed analysis" if we compare him to Messi going into midfield to create without scoring

Titles, and goals (better scoring ratio per game)

He was voted the player of the tournament, whether he was is very debatable.
"Ronaldo was voted Ballon d'Or 5 years, whether he was is very debatable"

We all can reduce this debate at that absurd level.

For the record, i have. I used to think Ronaldo was the best, because i didn't watch Barca at all back then. Was huge Ozil fan and pretty much watched most Real games, then i stumbled on a couple of Barca games(might've been El Classicos fwiw) and in my mind there's no doubt Messi is the best there has ever been. If you ask who is the best right now or the last few years? I don't honestly think anyone comes even close.

It's not possible to concede that Ronaldo is a better footballer than Messi because he just isn't. You cannot concede that because it palpably isn't the case. That's why there are countless current and former professionals literally queuing up to say that Messi is not only the best player in the world, but the greatest footballer ever. Google it, if somehow you've missed this. If you can't use Google, I'll happily make a list for you!

I have actually seen Ronaldo play in the flesh far more than Messi for United, in fact I'm sure I've seen him play more in the flesh than virtually everyone that has contributed to this thread. There is no doubt in my mind that he is the best player ever to play for Man United, and there is equally no doubt that he is a truly great player.

There is absolutely no problem with conceding that because it's obvious. It's as obvious as the fact that Messi is far superior technically, does more on the field of play, and is just clearly the better footballer. As I said, this is why so many players, former players, pundits, journalists, and objective observers deem Messi to be the greatest player ever, let alone the best player in the world.

You'd be blind then. Messi is better dribbler, playmaker and just better all round player than Ronaldo. I don't know how it's up for debate. Messi is GOAT.

Maybe it's because there are plenty more things that make up a football player, not just a select group of handpicked attributes and misused stats the fanboys and romantics choose to glorify and wank themselves silly over? Maybe.

This.

I get that there's an argument because their stats are somewhat comparable. However it's very easy to see just watching the game Messi is the superior player. His range of passing, dribbling, vision, free-kicks, overall control over the game is second to none. CR7 is a legend in his own right, but no one is going to remember him as the superior player, especially since Messi will eclipse all of his stats by the time they both retire.

Well, it turns out that it's precisely the ability to control the ball and find spaces in impossible positions what allows Messi to create such high percentage chances and to score so efficiently. Not to mention the dimension of playmaking, where it's not even a contest.

That's why those are seen as the fundamental footballing skills and are valued more than off the ball movement or athleticism. Not because they're easier on the eye, but because they're more valuable.

Things like what? Height, physical robustness, headers? Cause I can't think of anything else that Ronaldo has on Messi. He's just a better player and there's no shame in that.

I can't imagine how disengenous one has to be to sum up Ronaldo's contribution to the Euro win in these terms.
I know you Chelsea supporters love full kit wankers.

His contribution was what Messi did a few times, what follows wasn't in his hand.

I'm just paraphrasing what most of the pro Messi people say in this thread to poke a bit of fun :)

Me personally I share the opinion of a lot of people, both great players. I've watched Ronaldo since he was young to know he was extremely technically talented (and still is excluding dribbling), but at the same time I can concede on a pure technique point Messi has more. But Ronaldo has turned up clutch enough over the last few seasons, especially in the CL, for me to put him up there too.

That's the thing, I've seen Ronaldo since his debut and I grew up with him if you like. I appreciate that he's one of the greatest players of all time too but in my opinion you just have to hand it to Messi. The guy is just a genius.

The fact you can't think of any other attributes that make up a player says it all really. The ignorance here really is incredible.
