We can’t get rid of all out squad players at once. Getting rid of Darmian and Valencia will be good work. Makes sense to keep Young for one more year.
I agree, but only if we're signing another right back which I'm not confident is something the club will do.

You need senior players with strong character to oversee transition periods. It might seem crazy but at the top level teams sometimes keep players around for their dressing room presence. If he’s phased to backup next season I’m okay with this extension

I don't want to sound condescending but I feel like the people that rate young as a right back don't really understand how the position is supposed to be played. He's not developed into a right back because he hasn't grown up being taught what to do in certain situations. People see the late last minute tackles in the box and think he's doing a great job. He's not. My issue with him, and keeping him here, is that, whilst I love what he brings to the squad and he actually gets what it means to be a United player he should only ever be a third choice in that position.

When he's playing right back next time, just take note of his position when the opposition counter attacks. What you'll notice is that he runs back and tucks in, he doesn't close down the space the left winger is running into, essentially letting the attacking have a good 20 yard free run down that side, he'll wave at his midfielder. Often Herrera, to go over and attempt to cover the space whilst the winger is at full sprint. Herrera is usually in a forward facing position behind the attacker, whilst young is in front of the attacker and goal side. It's impossible for herrera to do this. This is young's job, he should be cutting down the angle by moving into space ahead of the attacker. Instead he usually does the opposite, even when we have 3 other defenders unoccupied.

What he does is to tuck in really close to our right centre back and allows the attacker to get into the area or down the byline before attempting to make a last ditch tackle. It's not his fault he hasn't grown up playing as a defender and it's not something you can suddenly learn at 34. But it is our fault for keeping him on as a potentially starting RB.

A great servant to the club. Shocked at the disrespect he gets from United fans. A guy in his mid-30s who has played in a world cup and is still asked to be the first choice right back, and people are surprised he's a bit knackered in February? The fact he's still out there giving it his all is a testiment to his character.

A one year deal its okay, as many have mentioned you can’t get rid of 6-7 players at once, if the rumors are true and the budget for the summer are 200 million then I expect we will sign a maximun of 4 players. Considering we sold Fellaini, And Rojo and Darmian are most likely out and that Fred has been a disaster we can’t afford to lose more players even Young.

Indeed, we can't let him go at the moment considering that Valencia will, most likely, will not get a new deal in the summer and also Darmian might leave.

Young’s not the best full back or wing back in the Prem but he plays with his heart for the badge. As captains go he’s vocal and inspirational on the pitch. In terms of contract, an extra year is hardly a hardship for the club and it maintains a level of experience in the squad.

Young contract latest
Despite the earlier reports MEN Sport do not understand there to have been an agreement over a new deal for Ashley Young.

Both parties have been in talks over a new deal for a while, but as it stands their is nothing confirmed yet.

I hope this doesn't mean we won't pursue new RB.
Valencia and Darmian are both going, so we're almost 100% going to get a new RB (or LB maybe, but more likely a new RB).

No way are we starting next season with 3 full backs.

Blind left last summer, Darmian, Rojo and Valencia will likely leave this summer, that leaves us with Young, Dalot and Shaw in the full back positions. I am absolutely OK with Young signing a new short term deal because we cannot get rid of 4 or 5 players in the same position at once. We'll sign a right back in the summer I think and that will leave us with 4 players for 2 positions which is OK.

He seems like a wiser figure for the young lads in the changing room. I’d pay him to hang around in there. However ffs keep him away from the pitch. He’s a dead end on the right wing.

I don't understand why people are freaking out. If Darmian and Valencia leave, we'd be left with Shaw and a 19 year old Dalot as the fullback options. That means making 2-3 purchases for that position in the summer. It's just not feasible.

It makes a lot of sense to bring Young back on a one year deal. He can cover either full back spot and provides leadership.

The problem will only arise if we don’t find our starting full back in the summer. I’d like us to sign an established right back and have Dolot/TFM as cover and gaining experience in cup games etc.

Young can cover Shaw which at this stage of his career is perfectly fine. Like others have stated it’s unrealsitic to sell/release Valencia, Young & Darmain and then have to sign two full backs at a minimum in the summer.

As long as Valencia and Darmian are leaving and we're gonna buy a new RB it's all good.

Not good enough imo, but there are others worse at the club. Some players offer absolutely nothing, and others can bring in a transfer fee, but Young ticks neither of these boxes so just isnt a priority to remove.

I think this is a decent decision as he can cover LB, RB and with Valencia, Darmian leaving this summer it is an even better decision by the club.

However, I would be peeved if Jones was given a contract, if we have any ambition of winning the league then he is the type we cannot have anywhere near our club.

I agree to some extent on this, but reading it made me Wonder. Whats your thought on Bailly as a CB? They have simular flaws

Will only be okay if we plan to get a starting RB in the summer and Young to be there just for dressing room morale.

To be fair I use the wrong word sometimes if I am writing something down at speed. I usually try to read it over first, you would think a newspaper it would be a priority.
Well, yeah we can all make mistakes, but like you said, we're not writing for a fecking newspaper!

(I went to check before quoting your post in case it was your transcription that was at fault)

I don’t think Young signing a new deal has any bearing on us signing a new right back as I see Young switching back to left back as Shaw’s back up then Dalot and a new signing as right backs.

If Valencia, Darmian and Rojo all as expected go in the summer then moving Young on too would leave us with just Dalot and Shaw unless we’re planning on signing two full backs AND a world class centre back and completely restructuring our defence.

Personally I’d love to see us sign a right back, left back, centre back, defensive midfielder and a right sided forward (which isn’t unrealistic as it’s 5 signings) and moving on Darmian, Valencia, Jones, Rojo, Fosu-Mensah (not good enough for us if not good for Fulham) and Wilson but I think we’ll only sign 3 or at most 4 in the summer.

He will be here as a backup. I for one think this is good news, he can play both RB-LB and would get plenty of games.
We will sign a new RB in the summer and having him around will be good for the younger players.

Nothing wrong with this at all.

He's a decent backup option even if he's not a great footballer. Especially since he's just as good at LB as RB.

Be good to have him around another year.

Obviously there will be a meltdown on here, because, well, it's here.

Ignoring all the 'not good enough' drama queens, he's very much the kind of player the squad needs, he won't be seen as 'the future' and we're going to be short with Darmien and Valencia expected to leave.

Very much a leader on and off the pitch and is performing across two positions better than we have any right to expect.

Good for him.

Good. We need him. We need a new starter, but people seem to forget that you can't just have a first team.
