Losing Herrera would be a massive blow to a midfield that should be looking to replace Matic as a weak link. It makes so much sense for PSG as well, puts into perspective how big clubs with enormous resources are still looking for smart deals. We should be doing this with Rabiot, but seems like nothing is happening on that front.

Disagreed.

Ole had so many opportunities to rest Matic and played Herrera in his position, especially in the games when we played Fred / Pereira but Ole has insisted on Matic and clear first choice since he arrived.

Ole doesn't rate Herrera playing in the holding mid role without a doubt, otherwise he would have definitely given him a game or 2 there at least
You have no idea about who he rates, they are not in competition. There is no agreement or disagreement to have here when fit Pogba, Herrera and Matic start when one of them isn't fit the competition is between McTominay, Pereira and Fred. Matic and Herrera have been out at the same time at the exception of two games where they each missed a game which doesn't allow us to draw any conclusion.

He's had 3 capable midfielders for 3 spots. All 3 basically had to play every game when not injured.

If he stays I expect us to sign a ball player for Herreras spot and for Herrera to phase Matic out.
Herrera and Matic are both not good enough for our first team but we dont have better at the moment. We should look to replace to replace them both one by one and or keep them as squad players for few years.Herrera as DM cannot play same role as Matic.Herrera can be DM and have a role of ball winner,Matic plays like a holding player, someone who can hold or protect the ball at his feet and resist opposition players pressing him and pass further(Matic is also not a good passer, thats what we are missing in that holding position) .Herrera doesnt have that quality of keeping the ball at his feet and shielding it or even good enough positioning to be that type of holding midfielder.
Yung Ander vs. Real Madrid

"No technical ability and cant pass" apparently
First thing noticed watching he was more energetic, which is his main strength and he was used in a more advanced role even as attacking midfielder.Good workrate and pressing opposition into making mistakes in possession, and has some technical ability and how could he be a footballer otherwise. He was better getting past a player but if you look closely shooting and passing was never his best side. Simple, quick one twos or some relatively short ones in space behind defence are good but longer ones not to the first player by his side are awful, doesnt have neither accuracy neither pace of the ball thats why he is not a good passer, just average. He shoots the ball without any strength or pace also thats why he is not good at shooting, and of course he has scored some goals outside the box, every midfielder does one screamer now and then.He is good player which knows his strengths and weaknesses but not that great as some posts describe. He is worth keeping as a role of a important squad player but nothing more.

If we want to get better then it's the dross we have to get rid of, not our second best midfielder. Letting him go would be a terrible mistake.
You have to really assess the situation and understand the players involved. If Solskjaer believes that the young backup players will be pushing first team spots then you may actually be better off letting a first team midfielder go and directly replace them. Afterall, your McTominays, Freds and Pereiras are probably on lower wages and understand that they need to improve to make the first team. I doubt Herrera would want to sit on the bench.

We need him in all our big matches. We dont have a young player to replace what he gives. Its hard to find another player in europe who gives exactly what he gives

You are nuts over him dude. The top teams in Europe don't even play with someone as limited as him in midfield.

I dont completely disagree with you, I think you're a little harsh but I get the gist of what you're saying. But he clearly has some technical ability and passing even though he's never been someone to consistently make defense splitting passes, or scoring great shots in his career. He can do those things and has done those things, but with less regularity than a player who specializes in them.

I’m not sure if it’s entire on OGS though. Might be that PSG is simply offering a contract we can’t or don’t want to match - wages and/or length? We also left negotiating the extension a bit late.

But yeah, probably all just conjecture at this point.

Do you consider Juve or Liverpool as “top teams” in Europe? Again, I’m not saying he’s world class but the notion that we simply have to improve on him (right now) to compete is bonkers, IMO.

How is Herrera limited? he's good at tackling, good at shooting, good at passing, good at pressing. His only weak point is he's not the quickest.

He's literally the polar opposite to limited, I'd say he's rounded. Personally I'd replace Matic with a proper ball winning midfielder and leave Pogba to do the attack, Herrera to do everything inbetween.

He is really useful and energetic midfielder who gets in oppositions faces with grit and tenacity, he is really useful in doing some jobs. He is a very useful player.

They would if he was in Matic's slot

I'd much rather see Matic go than Ander. Even if you signed someone like Kroos to play with Pogba in front of Matic, there's just no dynamism or ability to win the ball back int hat CM 3

I think he serves a very important purpose currently due to a lack of depth and options in midfield. But I think generally what he offers (work rate and ball winning) is much more common than others lead on.

And I do think Juve's midfield are a bit classier on the ball (while still being defensively sound) than we are. And I think Liverpools strength is in having 7-8 options in midfield which you could compare with Herrera. So in that sense, it's worth keeping him and adding rather than replacing. But he is not integral.

He wouldn't get a sniff in either midfield. Lets be honest, the caf is the only place that rates Herrera to high heaven. Some people here would nominate him for a balon d'or based on a handful of motm performances.

Strange to say about someone who has been linked with Barcelona last year and PSG this year. Do you think the writer of those stories is a Redcafe poster?

I don't necessarily disagree with the bolded bit, and much else of what you say. All I am saying is he IS a good player. At times a very good player, and we can compete with someone like him in the side - if we upgrade the areas of the team that is in much higher need of upgrading.

So at this point - whether that is due to a lack of options, I'd argue he is also integral to the team as well.

Talk about hyperbole.

Well, if you don't think he'd be able to at least compete with your Milners, Hendersons, this older version of Matuidi, Can, Wijnaldum (also been great for Liverpool but he's even more limited than Herrera, isn't he?) etc. then it's to just agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Wouldn't get a sbiff in the starting XI is what i meant. On a free transfer he'd still be useful to have. I dont want to get rid but it won't be end of the world.

This isn't fifa. A DM doesn't have to have pace.
You’re right. If he tracks and positions himself as Carrick did he can still be very effective. Matic doesn’t though. He’s constantly out of position and I reckon Carrick would do him in a sprint even now. Never mind his diddling on the ball and poor passing range. He’s terrible.

So many people in this thread arguing what his best position is or whether he can pass the ball better than his peers, it's all moot.

When we failed to buy him under Moyes I was very dissapointed because frankly we lacked severely in central midfield, or perhaps people have forgotten how absolutely lacking our midfield was then.

When we signed him I remember calling my friend at 4am in the morning to rave about the fact we had a proper midfielder after watching him in pre season. Sometimes we forget the situations we were in previously and our judgements are affected as such, if we were to be asked who our 4 best central midfielders of the past 8 years were, I know Herrera would be one of them. I wouldn't have an issue with him leaving if we already had a player twice as good coming the other way, but we don't.

So what does it look like, so far or staying? We should offer him whatever, they are offering. It's cheaper than having to buy new player to replace a player leaving on a free.

It's cheaper in the long run. But giving players 300k just for him to stay is a ticking bomb. Before long everyone would be asking and doing exactly the same and we can never offload them.

I seriously doubt he is asking for 300k, my guess is the figure is around 200k

I'd say he's worth 120k max to us. Players like Herrera should be giving us discounts to play for the shirt. He's a very upgradeable part of the team. Whether he stays or goes one of he or Matic needs upgrading. His replacement options just aren't high profile enough for the average forumer to know.

1. Replace your worst players with better ones.
2. Sign players better than your best players.
3. Keep all other players until they meet point 1.

It’s. It hard. He walks into our squad and is valuable in the first team right now.

Pay him what he’s worth to us. If he doesn’t want it, let him go, but only if you’re willing to meet Criteria 2.

I'm sure we are offering him a deal with what we feel is fair above his current contract and maybe some added bonuses on top, I like Herrera but if he is or his agent is requesting for a really big payday and some other team is willing to match it then I think it's better we just let him go.
