Gutted but also don't want us to dish out a four year contract at 150-200k. We should've had him sign one or two seasons ago.

Also in boards eyes we've just spent 50 million on Fred, probably on decent wages just warming the bench.

We'll see who comes in and how good Fred can be.

Could even signal the end of the Spanish contingent with Mata and De Gea.

Very poor from the club if he does leave, although it will send the message to other players that the club will not offer stupid wages unless your name is Alexis Sanchez.

Let it go Ekeke- he's off. The club can't keep overpaying wages to satisfy OK players.
I wouldnt want them to.

He's been one of our best players this season and until its confirmed I doubt he's leaving and also doubt that he's asking for £200k like the rumours. If he is then I'm fine with him leaving but worried about how we replace him

Good decision assuming he's demanded £200k. I get the feeling he's going to be horrible once his legs go, which is likely not too far.

He's probably agreed a deal with PSG but it doesn't mean he won't decide to stay either.

I'd be very surprised to see us let him walk for an extra 20/30k a week, it'll take much more than that to replace him.

Mixed feelings to be honest.

On one hand, slightly disappointed with him as I got the impression he loved it here. But it is what it is, not overly fussed.

On top of that, as someone stated above this means it is highly unlikely we replace Matic, or rather if we do replace him it'll be with McTominay. This means that we'll almost certainly be really poor in this area of the pitch next season.

On the other hand, Herrera himself isn't a huge loss. He's valuable to us now, but if we do begin on the road to building the team that we all want, then at some point we'd all want him replaced anyway. Just not yet. We can just hope that we make an upgrade on him now, and I don't see why we shouldn't.

EDIT - This also could be in line with Fred stepping up to the plate. Maybe.

All I hear is how passionate this guy is.

If he was passionate and loved the club, he’d be happy to take £170k at United over £200k at PSG.

I guess money talks and bullshit walks... he’s nothing special anyway.

Wait a min. Now it is 200k. Last week it was 150

The podcast with Castles (who is suggesting hes agreed to leave) is saying he's asking for about £180k

I'm still surprised if hes asking for more than £150k. Bit disappointed in him if he is.

But then again we fought tooth and nail to keep Fellaini for some reason, but we let Ander's contract expire it seems. Weird

Zero chance of us replacing Matic if this happens. Also, can see De Gea wanting to leave if Mata and Herrera leave.
Really? They can be friends, but when it comes to business it is all about each and every single one of them. You don't stay or leave the club cause you friend is staying or leaving.
If DDG wants to leave because his pals are leaving then, sniff, goodbye David. Hope they all end up in the same club so they can continue to be happy chapy trio.

Yup. All this talk of "United through and through" is hackneyed nonsense.

We will need two mids but for starters we've got Fred. Hopefully in these next games we use him a bit more because he started to show signs of getting more adapted before the break .

True, but I think he'd be better if he played next to Ander. Fred is a better passer and wins the ball more than Matic but next to Ander he can concentrate more on what he does with the ball. Next to Matic he'll have the same role as Ander, doing all the ball winning

I think anyone one would look better in a midfield next to Ander than Matic in fairness.

I can actually see this too, which I know sounds mean spirited on my part.
Ander's passing game has been one of the weaker aspects of his game now for sometime, which is a shame when you think this was a player rumoured to be Xavi's eventual successor in the Spain squad just before he joined us.

All I know is that we shouldn't match those wage demands.

Rather keep him than Matic or Fred. But he's not irreplaceable and definitely shouldn't be on enromous wages. Good player but not a top class one although I personally like him a lot.

Disappointing as that’s another 50m we’ll need to spend in midfield.

Losing Herrera and inevitably not replacing Matic as a result are both significant blows

If the rumoured wage demands are true, PSG are welcome to him to be honest. One thing to bend over backwards to pay Pogba what he wants, but Herrera as a first 11 player should be improved anyway. I’d love him to stay for the squad, but his quality isn’t worth daft money.

Captain material I think not.

I'm guessing Ndombele was the alternative we had in preparation for this. Now we might need another body unless we are prepared to trust Matic for another season.

Seems he's decided to leave.
Imo, we should only use him sporadically. If we continue to play him, he will deliver more performances like Sunday.
Good luck to him, I've always liked him.
Yep. Might as well see what the rest of the squad has to offer now if he’s decided he’s off.

I think if we do end up letting Herrera go, it confirms my suspicions about the summer transfer window.

I get the feeling we're going to go top heavy in the summer and snap up as many attacking players/midfielders as possible and neglect the defence for another season.

Our first choice back line will be Dalot, Smalling, Jones, Shaw for the whole of next season.

But our forward line with be lethal. We'll end up with a lot of high scoring draws but use it as a platform to add a back line to the following season.

That's the blueprint.

His PR "I love United so much" stuff was always more impressive than his on field performances. Slightly above average midfielder, all told.

Nowhere near big a loss as some may think, in my opinion. Midfielders who can do his job better are plentiful.

I’d be tempted to take that if we buy some amazing talents for midfield and up top. It would be disappointing to not get a CB though obviously.

Whoever said that had never seen him play. Such a weird comparison. Not all Spanish midfielders are the same

Yep. I love him, but we've just had people go mental about signing jones to a new long term deal on big wages. We could pick up replacements on half the wages (Barella, Pellegrini, etc).

The only reason PSG are buying him is so it guarantees De Gea will join them also. With Garner and McTominay emerging, we most certainly won't struggle to replace Herrera as a squad player despite him having a great season for us.

I think with us now allowing him to leave means we plan on strengthening that area anyway and we feel we have enough cover with players returning from loan and youth team players in the mix. People give the board shit but they'll be aware of the situation for a while, this won't be a surprise to them.

I suspect we'll go down the Liverpool route of squad building. It's easier to get your front line and midfield all working together as unit before adding defenders in the mix. Defenders have the most limited job roles so it's easier to drop them in. The rest of the team are largely relying on their ability to read each others game, which is why it doesn't make sense to be signing one new forward player every season and wondering why they look shit in our team.

It's all well and good saying he's easily replaced but we need to be replacing the lump at DM first, not the 2nd best CM at the club, we are just weakening ourselves, you get rid of the deadwood, not the players that actually offer something to your team.

No they aren't, his relentless energy helped cover up defensive inadequacies all over the right side of the pitch for us and his passing is a bit underrated. There aren't many midfielders with that profile.
