How far away do you think we are in terms of quality and realistically do you think we could narrow the gap this summer?

We are 9 starting players, 5 squad players, 1 world class manager, 1 world class DOF and 3 years of training and implementing a philosophy away.

So no, we wont reach them not the next season or the season after that one, nor the season after.

Realistically the gap is only going to get wider over the summer.

There is no narrowing the gap I'm afraid, the gap is too big now

You have some decent players De Gea, Rashford, Martial, Lingford, you basically need a commanding central defender and midfielder.

Reminder that Liverpool were 8th not that long ago and were only 4th last season.
They signed a great goalie, an great CB and have sorted out their fullbacks, so now attack properly and are not constantly dropping stupid points. They have also had loads of luck, have they made some of it themselves, probably, but they have been unbelievably jammy at times. We are feckless in front of goal and feckless at the back. Both areas need sorting for us to get anywhere near the Top 2.

That is assuming they don't drop

Liverpool were never this bad though. They had inconsistent form and lack of bottle over the years but were easily capable of turning teams over, especially at Anfield.

You wonder how much stronger City can realistically get so you’d hope we can bridge the gap a bit but it’s too much of a turnaround to expect us to mount any sort of serious challenge. Never mind City I think United fans will be content to try and reign Liverpool in and finish top four.

5-10 years.

City have the right manager and structure.

Even if this summer United fixed all the issues infrastructure wise, then the club would still take recruitment of personal and players then a season or two for it to gel.

Guardiola inherited a lot of good players (young players too), and owners that gave him a blank cheque and believed in him, they believed in his vision, United have Woodward and a bunch of dinosaurs at the helm.

When you look at someone like Ole, you don't think "he's the right man", it's again another "transition" and a "maybe".

Guardiola and Klopp are elite managers, and you know immediately that they will bring success and a challenge, you back them, if they say "I want this", you arrange for them to have it.

If you have a manager like Ole, who says "I want this", the board would question him, and its both the structure and the manager, players also don't really respect Ole, it's not like walking into a club with an elite manager honestly, he still feels like a caretaker manager at this point.

It honestly feels like at this point, he's not the manager until the season starts again, and even then it'll be the same story of poor recruitment, not spending on players, renewing contracts where they shouldn't have done, because honestly, the clubs broken on a lot of levels, and that alone will take years to fix.

They had a clown in goal, Moreno at fullback and Lovren at CB. That would cause any team problems. They sorted it all. We have just shut our eyes to everything.

Really fecking far. This is a team that could possibly gain 198 points in two seasons. 198. That's mad. They are also only out of the CL due to their drops in performances rather than actual squad quality too and should really be certs for the final this year if not for the fantastic fight by Spurs in the QF. Alternatively you are out because you weren't good enough. It's getting worse commercially too. Pep is the golden manager and with each passing season City are only going to become more and more commercially sound. Fans outside England don't give a shite that the stadium isn't full or they're only up there because of the money.

You were 19 points behind them last season and you came 2nd ffs. IF you splashed the cash a bit more last summer then you might be closer, but you fecked it and are now another 2 steps behind meaning it will take more than just a summer window to bridge it.

We're closer to Huddersfield than we are City
No, we’re not, not in quality and not in points.
That said, we’re pretty far behind City at the moment, and we most probably will still be after this summer.
We could and should be back in top four though, and next summer transfer window should make us title challengers again. I have not given up.

We need to spend. That much has been obvious for a while. We also obviously need to get it right. That's how Liverpool challenged so quickly. That's how City did it. Get the attack sorted (including wingbacks) and we'll look livelier, make chances, and put them away. Then sure up the areas that need it. We could do it in a few seasons if we get on with it, but we won't. We'll see how certain players go that we should just cut our losses on, and we'll keep on struggling to sort out the bigger picture because it just ends up a cycle if you don't make big moves to get out of it.

We're almost as far from City as they were before their change in ownership. The gap won't get any closer until we change the internal structure of the club.

Players that they consider 2nd string stroll into our team that's how far off we are.

De gea

Danilo Otamendi Stones Shaw

Gundogan Pogba Herrera

Mahrez Jesus Sane

With most of their second string replacing our starters we would probably comfortably finish top 4

A good DoF and a billion pound investment in players will bring us on par.

What's to say that they won't also strengthen and further the gap whilst we try to close it?

I know it's a sickening read but you can see what a solid structure in a club can bring you. They changed quite a few managers down the line but they benefited from most of their signings and they always looked like they had a plan in place whenever things started to go a bit wrong.

Amongst footballing managerial 'Gods'
Well last season we came second and Liverpool came fourth. Liverpool made some great signings and stuck with a manager with a good philosophy and now their on par with City. We are not that far if we appoint a quality manager to rebuild this team without an identity. However, if things remain, we will be as far as other mid table club. This summer will be huge for us and even though some people claim we are far apart, a few decent signings and a quality manager will have us right in the mix again.

Five or six years, at least. We won’t be challenging for a while and everyone involved with the club needs to accept it. But then Woodward will try to sign Gareth Bale on £600,000 a week and we’ll carry on like this.

If you knew nothing about football and watched the game today you'd have no idea which club had been relegated
