Obertans #1 fan.
I'm completely stunned by this decision. Where is the logic? Can anyone tell me? It's almost like the person making these decisions knows absolutely nothing about football.
What if Herrera wanted 200k+ a week and Jones and Young combined are on less than that?

Big mistake and it will come back to hurt us.
One of the few players that I thought actually gave a shit about the club.
Other players should be leaving before him, but he has clearly been turned but the money PSG are offering.
Wish him well.
I am hoping that Ole has a very good replacement sort for him, thats why he has been allowed to leave, McT is not that player yet

If you are talking about whether we should give him an offer 12 months ago, I think we already did. That's why we triggered the 1 year extension while he was considering it. If you are talking about whether we should give him a new contract 18-24 months ago, may be we should 2 years ago because I recall he did quite well under Mourinho season 1, but I don't know and can't recall any story on him 2 years ago.
As I have said PSG are the ones who threw a spanner in the works, probably revenge for us knocking them out. Can't blame him for probably very politely asking if we would match it, we haven't so he has taken the better offer. I really can't blame him and he is a bright lad and can probably see where this club is going and it isn't up.

Being honest, as hard as he worked, he was never really that consistent for us and went missing in some big games. It’s not a great loss. I know he looks like he gives a shit on the pitch and he looked captain material at times, but he’s never cemented himself as a key first team player and he never would have. Rather him move on and wish him the best. Agree its perplexing letting him go ahead of keeping some of the other dross we have, but we have to clear some space and if he’s willing to go to another club just for more money then obviously we never mattered that much to him.

Sad to see him go, but a bit weird for the club to celebrate his time with us when he's leaving on a free against the clubs will. Those sorts of exits are usually kept pretty minimal, unless they're a club legend.

Can't blame him though, if what has been said is true, and that he was informed of contractual details via post and we left it too late with no communication. Club is a mess, he's got a few years left, why not win some titles at a club with a bigger platform than us right now.

That said, is he going to get many games ahead of their current options?

Typical of our board. Penny smart pound foolish approach of leaving it until the last 6 months to offer him a new deal meaning they'd minimise the time period to pay a salary increase.

He should have been offered a 5 year deal on £120k a week 2 years ago after he'd won our player of the year award. He'd have signed and we'd have one less player to worry about.

Failing that we should have offered him a £140k salary along with essentially a one off transfer fee in the form of a bonus to stay (£10m).

Instead a quarter of our Summer budget will now need to be spent trying to replace one of the few players who did not need replacing.

We've lost one of the only players who still had the passion and desire that a United player should have, and we lost him through incompetence. Seems about right.

Calling him a money grabber is a bit shit. I genuinely believe he loved the club and it took a lot of shoddy treatment by Van Gaal, Jose and whoever is in charge of contract renewals to push him over the edge of this decision.

It doesn't matter what profession you're in, if you go to work every day and give your all; abide by the standing principles of the company and deliver results while watching other colleagues feck about, make mistakes, take months off sick at a time and generally be less good at their job than you - yet they're getting promotions and pay rises while you're still left in the dark as to whether you'll have a contract at all next year, you're going to get pissed off eventually. It doesn't matter how much you love the company or how loyal you are.

Once he'd reached the tipping point, and it seems that was the post or text notification of his contract last year (if any one of you tries to argue that a company like Manchester United shouldn't be expected to offer every employer, playing and non-playing, the common decency of a sit down meeting to discuss major events within their employment then you're barking), how can anybody criticise a man for seeking out the best deal for him and his family?

He's been disrespected by the club and decided to leave. He's entering his 30's and has young kid(s) - of course he's going to take a 4 year contract worth 200k a week at a well resourced and high profile club. Anybody would in his position.

We're left in a position where any leadership and drive that existed within the squad has just been cut in half. Yes he's replaceable but as so many in here are fond of telling us all, you can't replace a whole squad in one window and there are at a minimum, 15 players we should have been getting rid of before Ander.

If we seriously think that he’s not replaceable then we need to get out more.
He’s closer to the end of his career and we should look at younger better options. Ndidi,Doucoure, Rodri., Tielemans...Folks, no need to get down about this.

So long Ander and thanks for memories. Great performance in the Europa final!

They should reward players when they have done well, like a lot of clubs do, tie them down, so really when we won the EL and he was POTY was when a sensible club would have done it. He would likely we here for another couple of years at this stage on a wage he would be perfectly happy with. This club at times is very short-sighted.

Problem is fans come up with all these players who, yes would be good replacements. Then the club goes out and signs the likes of a Djemba Djemba or worryingly a Fred for 50m.

200k a year? So PSG are offering a wage reduction at around 4K a week and he’s taking it!

Boy have Utd become shit!

Agree with this.

I liked him and wish him all the best, but he was never a consistent player for us if we look back honestly on his time with us imho.

Loyalty (£)
Seems he cared more about money than 'loyalty' after all if he's trading the club for a few extra quid and a place on P$G's bench

He was a decent player on his day but I don't see him being a monumental loss as some are making it out to be. He's a limited player on the pitch who makes it up with effort but also could be infuriating at times with all the back passing and lack of contributions in the final third.

A few good games always seemed to gloss over his average play during the season and his 'passion' gave him a long leesh with some fans.

He's a shithouse footballer with the antics but I guess he was our shithouse which endeared him to fans and made him hated by rivals.

We'll probably be better off being able to upgrade and getting a deep lying playmaker in tbh

I very much doubt that a top club would keep a shit injury prone player solely on what? Facial expressions? Just ask fans who would they prefer to keep between herrera and jones
I don't know why you keep bringing Jones into Herrera's contract situation, it's got absolutely nothing to do with Phil Jones why he's leaving. Anyone that doesn't want to be here, isn't committed to the cause and won't try their best (however limited they are) doesn't have a place at our club.

Young was on 130k when he first joined. I doubt he's on much less now.

Shaw apparently on 160k and Fellaini was on 170k before he left.

Shattered my optimism in one post:(

Trading the EL and a big rebuild for CL football and league title and cup medals. What an idiot.

I like him as a guy, but ability wise he was decent at best.

Yes he always gave a lot of effort, but this has to stop being celebrated here and needs to start being the norm.

We won’t be a top side again until we have players with both quality and workrate.

At the end of the day, £200k a week for a 29 year old who isn’t amazing is a bad deal.

You're missing the point. Our board allowed his contract to run down, treated him like dirt and panicked. Herera should be nowhere near the list of deadwood we want rid of.

The ironic thing is we extended Jones and Young who should be joint first on the fecking list of deadwood.

Well, I'll miss him, thought he generally played well and was determined when on the pitch. Asked to do the dirty work against the likes of Hazard and got on with it. Farewell Ander!

This is just disgraceful, one of the only players we have who actually get and love the club and we let him walk out the door for nothing.

Absolutely pathetic by the board and this is one of the reasons why we are now a midtable club.

Pathetic

One of few players in our squad that I actually like and would want to stay with us. Shame he's going, but I can't blame him at all. PSG is a great opportunity and we are a shambles.
