You don't think Di Maria, Sanchez and Fred came to Utd for the money?

You won't be at least a bit skeptical if de Ligt goes to Utd over Barca?
I don’t think they came to United just for the money, to then deliberately play shit because they really wanted to play for another club who were offering less money.

If De Ligt signs for United I’d not for one moment suggest he wouldn’t bother his arse, because the only team he wanted to play for is Barcelona.

Don't think so. Maybe things went sour and he wants out now but "always a stepping stone" seems a stretch.
Once again... I'm not sure of the rumor but I had read that Pogba never wanted to join us. He was looking to go to Real or Barca and at the time when he was looking for a club, the price was steep and neither of the Spanish clubs wanted to invest in him. Raiola convinced Pogba that if he can be at United for 3 years, he could make the transition to Barca or Real after that. That would also help with negotiations since he went from earning not much at Juve to 250k/ week at United and with the World Cup winner tag, he can ask for more at Real or Barca.

Nobody plays badly on purpose. Do you not think by joining us for financial reasons, it impacted their desire and commitment to the club, hence effecting their performances?

Don’t get me wrong I love the FSG and Klopp for how they have improved us but sometimes we need to have that killer instinct in the transfer market as well, I mean we aren’t bad in it but we could be a bit better.

VVD should be his International CB partner for the next 7/8 years and it would have made perfect sense us signing him. But with clubs now offering this kid a stupid salary I wouldn’t even be surprised if he ended up at United with no Champions League football, when you say it out loud it’s mind boggling because you lot have already managed to do that once with Pogba

I personally think he would not work out for Liverpool. Everything about De Ligt screams leadership and i think he'd have huge conflict with VVD. For few international games it might be alright but not week in week out.

He's 19...surely his wages won't be a problem or anywhere near a problem? This throwing massive money has to stop we find out what Barca and co are offering and we add 10%. If he still doesn't want to come he's not really what we need.
Well you'd hope not but I'd imagine that were having to offer more than barca in wages, and most definitely in commission to Raiola.

Messi hasn't got that long left, Barca aren't that rich. Where are they going?

Commit to a potential declining program or something else

If we've done it once before it's not mind boggling.
Yeah that was a shocking moment for me personally didn’t think Pogba would come. Thought he was too good, he has been your best player since he came to United and you guys haven’t won nowt noteworthy so when he leaves I’ll still like him so there’s that. But I don’t see De Ligt coming to United this time and if he did we will all know why .

In the position we're currently in, we have to bridge the gap with other clubs who are better on the pitch with money until we get better at football.

So many things to unpack here.

First, it would take a miracle if VVD is going to last for next 7-8 years as first choice Dutch CB. You guys would be well served if he gives you another solid 4 years or so. I’d actually argue that if he’s the type of leader we hear about, he’d much rather create his own legacy than live in his compatriot’s shadow for club and country forever.

Think about the salary, if you pay De Ligt the kind of money being reported, you’d have to pay VVD even more and Salah equally high. That isn’t something you can just do at a whim. If you can consistently challenge for trophies, you’ll start creating the type of revenue that would eventually allow that in long term.

As history would show you, players give little fecks about CL if they are offered right money. Just see Man City and Chelsea for plenty of examples.

Joining United might be much less attractive at the moment but it is surely still massive for any young player.

Joe Gomez looked like potential world class CB before his injury. Buying Ligt means you've given up on him and that would be foolish. Plus Liverpool would be better off strengthening their midfield.

I don't understand why he would he have a conflict with his countryman whom he has already played with and said he would like to play with...

We'd all prefer to be able to offer lower wages and the sheer pull of United and how good the team are was enough. But currently it is, and we're meant to be the "Biggest club in the world", so it's times like this to show it.

Good post and I agree with the whole of it, my main issue is Klopp with the aide of VVD not being able to scout him a bit earlier or maybe they did and Klopp just has more faith in Gomez as @MackRobinson mentioned. But Gomez is only young and has suffered quite heavy injuries already, I have trust in Klopp though.

Cause both are leaders and would like organizing the defense in their own way.

I am sure he considered both us, Barca and Real. Also, if his agent told him "go to United, if it doesn't work out you can always go back to Madrid or Barca" then I don't see much wrong in that. If a player is using us as a "stepping stone" the way Ronaldo did then that also coincides with massive success for the club.

This would make too much sense. Lindelöf-De Ligt is a CB duo that could last for almost a decade. I sincerely hope we get it done.

that same account actually has a newer, longer, more recent vid ;)

A 19 year old defender shouldn’t be that good at defending.

He’s like a legend in a FIFA game who’s regenerated into a youth player again but kept the same attributes.

He plays like he’s played the game for decades.

Whoever gets him - have a hell of a player on their hands.

Mr Mino very obviously using us as a bargaining chip
I think we actually have a shot - probably delusion.

However we get used so many times it could also be true. I don't see why the club don't come out and shut this sort of stuff down like others have.

Much as I can see this just been a ruse to get Barca to pay more, I can also see it as Raiola using him as bait to get us to lower any Pogba fee we might have asked Madrid for.

Just win win for Raiola if we get De Ligt, and Madrid get Pogba.

Because the club think they’re in with a slim chance too. This is what happens every year we hold out fir the big name who ends up having just been using us to get a better offer then we have to run round after what’s left (who by then know they’re second choice and don’t want to join either). It’s not an easy position to be in and I don’t envy ole and Ed- bring in a position where we have to strengthen a good chunk of the team to get to the level we want to and have the resources to do so, but at the same time we’re not that desirable is quite a unique and lonely place...

If all this leads is to is a player getting a higher contact somewhere else then I'd still be slightly happy.

I want it to be as hard as possible for other clubs financially even if it doesn't benefit us directly.

Another Dutch media headline: https://www.voetbalzone.nl/doc.asp?uid=352340 (it's in Dutch again).

It boils down to Barcelona has laid down the two options for De Ligt. Go to United and chose money or go to Barcelona and chose Messi. It's like they're trying to make me choke on my own vomit. Please don't go to Barcelona, Matthijs (as if he's reading this). It does also say that the chances of him signing with Barca are becoming smaller, because they can't match the alleged salary of 13 million a year United are offering.

The source for this is the Spanish paper Sport.

Combining the physical with the mental, De Ligt is as sure of a talent as there is in football. Part of why I refuse to believe he’s coming to us.
