3 goals 2 assists in the league, 1 goal each in CL & FA cup! We are keeping that terrible ‘’output’’ to prevent our young players such as Greenwood & Gomes from playing. Of course it’s big deal, I just don’t get how some people think it’s ok to keep him if we want to do rebuild.
Nice guy, good back up. Great servant.

Pretty much what we say about all our players who continue to collect starter wages and start half the games.

Yup, this is the major problem. I'm happy with extending his contract, if he accepts a reduced wage and is ready to be a squad player.

But this is highly unlikely. I'd rather sell him, and buy someone like Daniel James (are we still in for him??), who would likely cost less money and wages, and also have loads of potential to improve.

I shout current Giggs name to show you how bad Mata & Young as an option in this role, and you struggle to understand. Get the right player for the role, don’t just pick the players for the role just because they are old.
With respect, you struggle to understand. Mata and Young are not the players we need to move forward, that I agree. I also think that if you sell everyone, you risk creating a group of people, not a team.

To cut to the chase, we should not even be discussing this - Mata and Young should have been managed out of the team and their replacements should already be in place and embedded in the club, but we are where we are.

The fact we’re still apparently trying to negotiate a deal is bordering hilariousness.
We have the worst negotiating team in the PL.

There is no risk!! Tell me, what can do worse than attacking mid who can only scored 3 league goals & 2 assists?

Just move on and give the spot to Greenwood & Gomes. They can do better than 3 league goals & 2 assists.

He's been a square peg that multiple managers keep shoving into a round hole. He's a very nice guy but it's time for him to move on to somewhere where he'll actually fit the team and for us to stop putting number 10s out on the right and then wondering why it doesn't work.

He'll be a brilliant ambassador for the club one day and that's the only reason there's any interest to keep him.

At this stage he looks ready for the Turkish league. One big last payday for a midtable club in Turkey, where you'll never really hear much about him again in terms of playing career.

At a time where City are considering getting rid of potential like Sane we're debating keeping Mata. Sign of the depressing times currently being a United fan.

Even Woodward should have enough in his head to realise that he's available on a free and still nobody wants him.

Dont think City really want Sane to go to be fair...

He is only a squad player so should accept a wage cut. We have some young players coming through who should be used in his place.

City are NOT selling Sane and they want him to stay.

I really like the guy and have always felt he's a brilliant player to watch on his day but it's time to move on for both parties. He should go to a Spanish club and get a bigger role and we shouldn't be using him anymore. Him getting a new contract is hardly the travesty that Jones and Young getting one is though.

By no means are we run like a Top club. I like Mata but the fact that we will have one more season of Mata, young, Jones running in our shirt is a joke.

Lovely bloke. But how are we expected to move on as a club when we keep renewing underperforming players contracts. Got some good youth players coming through a full squad.

I really don’t rate Mata that much, but it might be a case of actually having bodies in the squad. We’re on for a 50+ game season next year and having someone around like Mata and Young for Europa League games isn’t a bad idea at all. We’ve already lost a significant chunk of last seasons squad.

Play him at 10 otherwise whats the point of playing him? Completely wasted his prime at united.

Renewing the likes of Mata and Young is less about them as players and more about squad structure. I can understand wanting them to be upgraded but spending the time and money to do so would inevitably mean forgoing improvements elsewhere.

This is a multi-year rebuild with firm limits on what can be done in any given transfer window. As such it can absolutely make sense to keep a player on not because they're really good enough but because having them even just as an experienced body in a given position buys you the freedom to focus on more pressing and telling upgrades first.

There's a rather blunt logistical aspect to rebuilding the side that "x should be sold because he's shite" type opinions don't quite appreciate, even if their assesment of X is correct.

Absolutely this. Cup games, EL games and sitting on the bench if needed. I doubt he will start an PL games but worth having around. I doubt his wages will be what he’s currently on either.

I don’t think he will even be on the bench for league games and I imagine that is why the contract is still not signed.

Can anyone explain the thought process in offering him a deal? I just dont get it, simply not good enough.

We should just be cutting our losses with players like him, young, darmian, jones, rojo, bailly, sanchez and lukaku.

We don't need 'bodies', we need top quality footballers. Mata is far from good enough and if United were serious about improving their currently laughable status then he, along with the rest of the deadwood, would be shown the door.

He brings experience, he's a top professional and an example for the kids, he's still got quality on the ball, still one of our best passers and he's calm and composed. He also works his arse off every game unlike many others. Yeah we could definitely use an upgrade, someone with more pace, better physicality and what not but truth be told he's far from the biggest problem at the club and we need to prioritize who we replace this window. We should keep him for one more year and get a replacement in next year. This window I'd rather get a cb, rb, cdm, cb and a rw. That's 5 players already and I believe Ole said he expected 3-4.

I would imagine it's more due to his influence off the pitch rather than on it. Regardless of whether you think he's good enough on the pitch no one can question his commitment to the club and his professionalism and at a time when we've seemingly got a squad full of social media obsessed primadonas we should be keeping as many 'good pros' at the club as possible

I get it but I really don't like it, it better be a 1 year extension.

Been offered a new deal and likely to stay as he wasnt included in the list of released players. Baffling. I can only assume we have kept him so he can drive Dave into training in the morning and post his hugs on a Monday.

The club are offering something to show we are trying to keep him, doubt he'll stay. I hope he doesn't, waste of time keeping Mata.

Jones, Young, Mata. All worthy for a club in the bottom 10, if they're lucky.

Fighting for between 10th and 6th place with Leicester Everton Wolves and Watford next season is where we will be, once you make your peace with that fact you just have to embrace this kind of news. Mata and Young on that RW with the chuckle brothers at the back and Romero in goal

0 assist under Ole's games, one of our good passers?

Good example for youngsters? How about Pogba, Martial and Rashford? Do you think they will listen to him?
