I'm half-convinced that some of those shite papers just draw names of players out of one hat and names of clubs out of another to make up rumours.

It's a shift in our perception. The effort it takes to thoroughly read something, digest it and formulate a well thought response is beyond the ability of most folks. Especially if it's different than our existing beliefs. The time and discomfort it takes to consider an alternate idea and find common ground is too much.

I'm at fault of it myself. Much too often. And it scares me. Things like Twitter and Instagram lend to it. Quick triggers that satisfy an addiction. Ads and content are targeted to your preferences to stim that chemical release , compared to things that require thinking and processing.

So coming back to the forum and the reactions - most people don't read the links on these tweets. They go off of the title or click bait summary. They then react based on what they already believe is the current status of the club and say, our appeal to players. Now more than ever ,self deprication of the club seems the resounding norm.
Really well put, its crazy how easy it is to fall into that kneejerk pattern of response.

I think the core of it is the sheer amount of info that's thrown at you these days. Even if you're inclined to look deeper into these there's just too much to get through, makes for some real jerkey knees.

Got to admire Fridge chutney's determination for shitposting in this thread :lol:

Whilst it's annoying that feck all is happening on our end, I guess you could say no-one else in the Premier League or really Europe for that matter is making notable strides. I know Real Madrid are going mental but I'm pretty sure Perez is doing that so he doesn't ousted by their rabid fanbase whenever the next presidential election is, after the shit season they've had... also they've got to find suckers suitors for them to offload Bale and James and whatever other once coveted shiny toy they want to cast off, to confirm with FFP.

Also the usual main reason being everyones still on holiday or there's international tournaments going on, so I guess it'll all have to be done in July. I have a feeling AWB will sign as he comes back from the U21 Euros then feck off on holiday and come back for the tail end of pre-season.

Absolutely. I'm guilty of it myself. I find myself craving more content rather than really enjoying a few pieces of quality.

It's a problem with my profession nowadays too. I'm struggling to read through scientific journals the way I used to. Instead I catch myself preferentially reading the reaction journalism ..it's mental training to get out of this bad habit :(

Just a reminder to everyone that Coventry City used to be in the Premier League and have a wide following!
Carry on, not everyone is interested in just United transfers. I like to keep an open eye to the lower leagues and am not on twitter, so please sir, carry on.

Maybe I'll be crucified for saying this (and possibly thread banned) but the state of this thread lately. It's incredible. Only a few people are looking objectively at the articles and thinking interesting but is it likely, or a journalist trying to drum up a non-story or just what I want to hear?

Some people in here are taking it for gospel that we're in for x player or y player when in previous years the media had no idea on our actual signings until negotiations were near the end. Sometimes there were protracted sagas (Pogba) and maybe I'm being forgetful but how many others dragged on? I'm also pretty confident that we haven't gone anywhere near the likes of Fernandes all summer (remind anyone of Gaitan?) or even Maguire. There's a big chance journalists are making lazy links or foreign media/clubs are trying to push transfers and supporters in here is using it as an excuse to attack the club.

Even looking at the De Ligt story - what solid link have we actually had that relates us to De Ligt? Personally I'd rather not sign a 19 year old defender for the ridiculous fee and wages being mentioned, and I imagine some on here who would are the same ones who'd turn on him the moment he didn't deliver game-defining moments at the back anytime we drop points. Memphis Depay was a sure thing before he came to the Premier League, wasn't he? And Sanchez was definitely worth the wages on swap with Mkhi when we signed him according to most on here.. whoops.

Then people say "this must be a briefing from the club" or "they're managing fans' expectations". Or maybe a journalist has decided to generate a huge clickbait article, such as we only have £100m to spend this summer, and other journalists have decided to join the bandwagon not to miss out on the clicks?

Personally I'm hoping the club have some hidden gems that they're targeted which the media are yet to pick up on and it wouldn't surprise me if that's the case - it's seemingly always been the way. But in the meantime can we at least have some sense here to discuss transfer tweets without taking them for complete gospel and making this thread ridiculously depressing to read?

Welcome to the Redcafe. You must be new here.

Its called Transfer Muppetry. Happens nearly every summer.

It's insane how many times the point of SW has been explained in this thread in a span of about two months. Might as well put it in the OP at this point.
Not just this thread. Every single year since they’ve been posted on here, nearly every single time someone posts something from SW it has to be explained to at least one person what they do.

You wouldn't say that if I started posting all the transfers from Isthmian League Div 1 North :)

Right then, this is the week it all happens right? Triple deals today and tomorrow?

What a time to be a muppet :D

Go Ed
Seriously hope you’re right. I expect nothing however. We’ll probably rush one more deal through just before deadline day but I’m expecting to start the season with broadly the same motley crew as last season.

Don’t do it to yourself. This window is starting to look more and more like previous (and some of the more disappointing ones, at that).

Hopefully it's something like 45+10 and not 55+bonuses. But knowing how much the media loves to exaggerate our transfer fee, it probably includes fee+bonuses

You can't do much with 100million nowadays. Which is why no movement for players yet. We must sell before we can buy.
We also need to get someone who can get deals over the line quickly. A DOF is needed badly.

You really believe the 100 million rumor? Based on what, one source?
If that's true, we are fecked. And we are even more fecked if we are planning on spending more than half of that on FB when there are cheaper options of comparable quality around (Meunier)

What baffles me the most is, why can't we ship players like Rojo, Darmian. Just sell them,even if it is for a minuscule amount. At least they will be off our wage books. Or are they so bad that there are no takers for them?

Look people connected to the club are saying it. Castles and Stewart are saying it, and yes I believe with the Glazers in charge that it would be true. They have went back on their word many times before.

We can rest easy, Goal news have confirmed it.
It's a reputable source. It's the most visited football site in the world. Not sure how good they are on United but their City correspondent Sam Lee is one of the most reliable journalists on transfers there is. City use him as their mouthpiece in the press.

To be fair, Goal have gotten a lot better since they hired some actual journalists. Still mostly clickbait stuff but a lot better than they were a few years ago.

It's the wages that is keeping them here and no one wanting to match them, even if they were going for free.

It's a combination of factors:
  • players are on high wages that don't correspond to their footballing abilities;
  • expectations to get big fees for them;
  • lack of ambition in the players in question to play first team football - it seems most are happy to sit tight and receive the already secured paychecks;
  • no adequate football vision from the board, which consists of business people that have no real idea how the sport works.
In my opinion, we as fans should be putting a hell of a lot more pressure on the owners to act accordingly and swiftly reorganise the hierarchy of Manchester United. That's why I'm firmly in support of the "Glazers out" movement, even if it results in only achieving the required changes.

It wouldn't be 55 plus bonuses if the media is saying it's 55. And whether it's 45+10 or 35+20 or 55+5, I'm sure United fans don't care a hoot about that. Get the player, and move on to closing other deals. We need our squad and morale bolstered by August 1st.
