I could not have put it better. Anyone who thinks this carthorse is in the same league as de Ligt needs to see a shrink
Anyone who thinks we havent contacted De Ligts reps needs to see a shrink. IF we pay more for Maguire than DeLigt sells for more likely he refused us for a club way ahead of us right now. What's hard to understand about that.

So £15m for James. £50m for AWB and now a £70m bid for Maguire. That surely equates to more than the £100m budget we supposedly was reported to have.
Will probably be spread over the next few transfer windows. Spending more now will mean will have less next year and beyond.

Some sources saying they want £90m.

Erm. Yeah you keep him then.

why would Alderweireld leave Spurs right now? They reached the CL final, are again in the CL this year and are strengthening. People need to be realistic.
Let's be realistic. Spurs have peaked and they still haven't won anything. Their whole team will probably be gone by next summer by which time he'll be 31. They're on the way down. He can double his wages to come here and finally play for a really big club. No brainer really.

You have missed my point. Its not whether we made a bid for de Ligt. It is about someone comparing a carthorse to DeLigt

Defo a signing I want at whatever price...

But are we all just gonna ignore that Mourinho wanted him last Summer and got vetoed...?
Mourinho got vetoed because he was a giant annoying cock, let's be honest. The board didn't trust him.

Yes, because Mourinho was frying in a dumpster fire of his own creation at that point. Didn’t want to subject poor ol ‘Arry to that!

Behind the right goal post as "Whiteside shoots!"
I hope this is crap. 70M for a carthorse. If we do this we will be the laughing stock of the football world.
70M for him and we just paid 50M for a kid with less than 1 year in the first team for Palace. God what are we coming to
I dont mind being fleeced for something better but being fleeced for a carthorse is poor. Is he so much better than Smalling. What about Axel? Surely he deserves a chance before we do this.
I also think Nathan Axe is a better defender and is left footed

It doesn't say much for our scouts when we're willing to put down this kind of money for someone like Maguire. There has to be better options out there.

Spurs haven't peaked, they just added NDombele and Ceballos and are probably the third best team in England right now. Alderweireld has one year left on his contract, might as well stay and play CL and then get his big payday as a free agent next summer.

Happy with this if we sign him.

As fans we shouldn’t care too much about the cost, we can’t do anything about it plus if he proves himself it won’t matter in the end.

EVERYONE thought 75 for VVD was crazy, now no one even mentions it.

He’s English, PL proven (wether we like it or not, matters most of the time, just look at Lindelof’s start) strong, great in the air, good on the ball, no injury proneness and he’s an obvious upgrade for us. Only big problem is he’s not that fast.

And yet maybe they should have seeing as ya know they're bidding to sign a player he wanted 12 months ago

Our scouts compile reports on players. It's upto the club and manager to decide what recruitment method they want to adopt. The scouts have reports from players all around the world.

exactly. Let's also not re-write history and pretend that the Southampton VVD was as dominant as the Liverpool VVD. He was good, but the price was absolutely ridiculous at the time.

I really do not want this signing to happen. It's basically going to take a world record fee for a player who in my opinion will never be world class. I'd so much rather we just went for Alderweireld and saved the change. We can then focus on other targets in problem positions. I'd even rather we gave Tuanzebe a starting birth next season.

Without doubt though the best piece of business we could do at cb is to sell Phil Jones - I'd estimate he costs us at least 9 points a season.

He improves us so reach an agreement with Leicester and get it done. Would have loved De Ligt but that's clearly done to Juve. He would improve us, will help bring the ball out from the back and adds some attacking threat at set pieces.

I see a few comments on his pace but hoping this can be covered by the other defenders.

Completely agree. I see him as a slight upgrade on Jones only and certainly wouldn't swap him for Lindelof. We need to aim for a world class CB, if we can't get one, a budget option is the way to go.

I personally don't think this guy is worth anywhere near that kind of money, but I can see why we settled on him.

What we desperately need now is a defender that can come straight into our first team and perform from the start. This lad is already playing in the PL, has proven that he adapts quickly when he moved to Leicester, and has a physical style that should match well with Lindelof's style.

We already gambled with Rojo, Bailly, Blind, Lindelof and probably others I can't remember now and it didn't work so well.

Decent defender

Not worth his price tag but that’s not his fault, he’ll instantly be our best defender.

Think we’ll sign him for £82m or so.

Is he ever going to reach Rio/Vidic levels though? He's 26 now and probably nearly at his peak.. Wouldnt you rather sign a younger CB who we can mould into something far better or Toby who is already ahead of Maguire?

It just feels like signing Lukaku all over again, this time for the backline.

We give them 80m and they spend it on Tielemans and any prospect like Godfrey. Cycle repeats !

Ask dutchred. He's the expert.
I don't think he knows, either that or he has never seen Maguire play. There are other defenders I would choose if they were realistic options but he is very good defensively , decent with the ball at his feet and a good passer of the ball. Not sure what he talking about.

We already have 3 young defenders. Lindelof, Bailly and Tuanzebe we need to sign someone with experience now.

If it’s true, I’m okay with this. Personally, I’d have preferred De Ligt, but like Mick Jagger sang, you can’t always get what you want.

I have a sneaking suspicion we might sell Rojo and Bailly. We’d have Jones and Smalling as veteran squad?, Maguire and Lindelof as our first team side?, and Axel and Diop as backups? Who knows the LCB and RCB well enough to see if that distribution would work?

Well, we'll able to play out from the back more with a defence of AWB Maguire Lindelof Shaw, although DDG is still a concern on that front.

Magure would improve our defence a lot but i really hope he's paired with Lindelof and not Smalling/Jones as our first choice CB pair.

Diop back up? You don't spend 50m to play him as a backup.
