At 21 some players have a purple patch and go on to finish their career in League two, China or... Rangers.

Just because someone is playing at 5/10 every game at 21 doesn't mean they're destined to play a 7/10 every game aged 26.

Youri Tielemans has already shown definitive progress and is 100% better than Longstaff AT THIS TIME. Doesn't mean he'll necessarily be better in 5 years obviously.
First of all, you are comparing players who play in different positions. Tielemans is more of a box to box attacking midfielder whereas Longstaff is a more defensive minded midfielder. Secondly, how can you say Tielemans has shown definitive progress when he flopped at Monaco?

You do know that Longstaff has surprised everytime he's been thrown into the lime light. Whether that be be on loan or infront 50,000 plus at a packed St James's Park. Former Newcastle player Lee Clarke has even given an interview regarding the ease in which he has stepped up whenever he's been thrown into the limelight.

I saw Longstaff reach a level in his limited appearances for Newcastle that I haven't seen from Matic in the last two seasons. More mobile, higher work rate, more composed and a bigger goal threat due to his shooting with either foot.

I would have him ahead of Fred and McTominay easily due to him being more rounded as a player.

Longstaff could play as a #8 aswell and would provide big goal threat due to his shooting ability. But I think Ole will use him as a DLP who provides amazing work rate and composure with added mobility infront of the back 4 which would improve our buildup play.

And to the people going on about the prices for English/EPL players? Most English clubs are awash with money and could easily turn down big offers for their players. And Manchester United is a English club and will always target players from within it's own country.
I hope you are right mate. Having said that I still think we would be putting too much pressure on the boy. Our midfield is in shambles

Not seen enough of him but do like that we are looking to buy young talent that's squad if not close to first team ready.

All the more reason to buy the likes of Longstaff that can and will go a long way to point us in the right direction.

I agree that we need a more established head in the midfield along with the experienced Matic, especially if Pogba leaves. Keeping Matic for another season would be great for Longstaff I'd say.

Keane had Robson and Ince. Scholes had Keane, Carrick had Scholes.... Longstaff has...

I think we need to build some solid foundations in midfield before we can entertain the idea of bringing in young talent there

Do we bring Carrick out of retirement?

I still find it hard to stomach at the way the club's hopes have gone.

Fergie leaves and Moyes comes in - "we can still attract the biggest names so no worry. Let's see if Thiago and Fabregas will join this summer"

LVG - "we're still a huge attraction for players who want to help us back into the limelight. Get Kroos or Gotze... Well, Schweinsteiger is a world cup winner and his injury woes may be behind him so he's worth a shot".

Mourinho - "alright, big name here now who will attract big names. Let's see who we can get - big wages too if needed. Just buy someone world class!"

Solskjaer - "Longstaff might step it up a notch once he puts on our shirt"

Feck me, man.

Never seen the guy play, which is understable after making 9 PL apperances, but from what I read he seems highly rated with great work ethic and good passing. I am all for signing the guy for a reasonable fee, 25m + 10m in add-ons.

But I would be very disappointed if he is our only midfield signing. That would be a huge mistake.

The club have made it clear that we are taking a different approach to transfers now compared to before, so not sure your post makes much sense.

We have tried to go down the route of signing ready made ‘stars’, look where that has got us. I still expect us to sign the odd superstar / big player every now and again, but the core of our business seems to have shifted to identifying the right types of players with room to grow, and with the right attitude. Let’s give it a chance before panicking.

Agree. I hope we give the management team the chance to make this work.

Is this not just similar to when City signed Delph? Don't remember them getting this much stick over that.

Not particularly, they also signed Sterling, De Bruyne and Otamendi, already had a pretty good squad that included multiple title winners, and Delph was 26.

Quotas to fill, etc, it's not like he's been signed as a first choice.

I think this is what people are worried about.

Hopefully something else happens in the next month or so because we haven't even replaced Herrera yet, let alone improved on last year.

I think he’s a great talent, really classy player.
The Carrick comparisons are valid in some areas of his game, but he’s more dynamic and has a much quicker turn.

I’d be delighted if we signed him for 30m.

why does this forum have such a hard-on for Tielemans?
It's truly bizarre, and you just know most of the people have barely seen him play.

It seems to be a case of "ooh, a midfielder, we need a midfielder", then the nonsense that 40m is some sort of buttons.

We had a spell of this a few years ago, where people were suggesting all sorts of utterly mediocre centre mids as a better option than not signing any.

But erm...let's see how Longstaff pans out (to keep this on subject)

But why does this club keep going from one extreme to another, this has kept happening at this club over the last few years, it's either let's sign players with a big reputation to let's sign unproven potential that may be good in a few years, same with managers and the playing styles they bring along with player preferences, it's no wonder we are in such a state, the same mistakes will be repeated if Ole gets the sack by once again a thing all panicky and react by replacing him with someone completely the opposite to Solskjear and that prefers a different formation, players and style of play.

Well one probable reason is due to the fact we do not have a Director of Football in place to help put together some consistency when it comes to the types of transfers we make, the managers we hire and the way we play football.

It's because Tielmans was / is a FM legend. That's the only reason.

and yes, I actually mean that.

Here's hoping we're signing the new Carrick, only this time before his breakthrough. I remember well how hard it was to nab Michael from Spurs.

Was recommended by Michael Carrick according to The Chronicle which is a Newcastle based outlet.

Feck's sake. Another deal we can't close.

"We're Man United, we won't be held to ransom" and pay £30 mil for a £25 mil player, unless it's Marouane Fellaini.

How is is that everyone we hear that we are presumably interested in becomes a great player on here.

Because you're not reading all the comments. there's actually a very engaging debate with just as many that say the exact opposite as well.
