If Maguire was to come.

Starters - Lindelof Maguire
Backup - Rojo Tuanzebe
Sell - Two of Smalling, Jones or Bailly

I'd call it a day on Jones and Smalling

Start the season with Lindelof, Maguire, Rojo, Tuanzebe and Bailly. Jones and Smalling have had some decent seasons between them but never reached the top level required. Give someone else a chance and let Lindelof and Maguire be our new leaders at the back and also in the changing rooms.
Thankfully Rojo has.. Or not. At least Smalling was brilliant for one season and decent in some. He's good enough to be a back up for anyone, let alone us at this moment. Tuanzebe is an unknown quality for now although it would be lovely if he can make it.

Would we have the slowest CB pairing in the league with Maguire and Lindelof?

Very worrying combo that, for me.

Would need to be paired with Smalling I think.

Agree with this. He's definitely not a great complement for Lindelof who also isn't quick and defends in a very passive style. And both tend to back off a lot when defending.

With Smalling they should win most high balls, and Maguire can use his size to be the more aggressive centre back which he's pretty good at. You just don't want the attacker to get turned and run at him.

Smalling can then use his speed and one on one ability to play a more sweeping role.

Seen a stat on Sky Sports that showed Maguire hit a higher top speed than most of our centrebacks last season.

Agility clearly isn't his biggest strength but I don't think hes as slow as some make out.

A lot of people seem to be saying this. Is Lindelof actually slow? I know he's not a speedster or anything but I've never noticed his pace letting him down.

Top speed is largely irrelevant for a CB. Acceleration over short distances is what matters.

The fact that United are the most profitable club in the world, sell their players for huge sums and now don’t want to ‘cough up’ what he’s worth to us is a bit disrespectful
70m is disrespectful for Leicester? Or is it greed and a English premium? Leicester will easily replace the player with half of that money.

It's because he rarely commits into challenges and tackles unless he's 100% sure he's getting there. So he's not often left beaten. But it's quite a passive way of defending which I'm not a fan of myself unless he was partnered with a super aggressive defender like a Vidic or VVD. Maguire doesn't strike me as that type.

I don’t think so. Also Maguire and Evans looked a good partnership at Leicester and Lindelof is quicker then both of them.

Unrealistic valuatuon? I think you'll find it's very realistic in the current market forces and I bet it will be paid if you are to get your man.

If you think HM's fee is unrealistic please justify £50 million for AWB? ie what experience, international honours, attacking threat , top stats he posesses to warrant that ludicrous fee? Just to clarify I think the majority of transfer fees are ludicrous nowadays though £15 m for Maguire from Hull was decent.
Of course it's unrealistic, No club ever will match that price of 90m. The current market price is 70-75m itself and not 90m.

AWB price was steep too, yes though he is 21 with many years of service left and if He was 50m including addones, 70-75 m for a CB with second last big contract on his side as he being 26 totally fair in comparison which matches the current market price which is very steep itself which also ideally I wouldn't have paid if our backs were not to the wall. Also AWB seems to be a prolific defender which ain't the case with Maguire.

90M is just ain't going to happen without some heavy addones included if we even match that by chance which I doubt. Leicester are being greedy here.

Leicester are greedy for attaching a valuation to one of their best players who is under contract? I guess United are greedy for demanding 180m for Pogba as well.

Hardly the same thing. One is a World Cup winner and can command such a fee. Maguire has achieved ... help me out here

Leicester are being greedy, because they can afford to be. Simply, they don't need to sell, nor do they want to.

Maybe Maguire reportedly kicking up a fuss may put necessary pressure on them, but we won't get him for anything less than £75m.

We are talking about a 90m+ delta in fees which accounts for all of that. One team wants 90m the other wants 180m. I still fail to see how Leicester are greedy and United are not...

No they are not being greedy. They have been pretty consistent in their valuation. Just because some Caf posters think it's too high is irrelevant. Greed would be them increasing their asking price as United increase their bid. Again, this is not happening. Nothing greedy about Leicester's consistent valuation at all.

Pogba's marketability adds to that price and valuation. He is that kind of player which can attract certain other players to join him as well and influence others decisions just like Ronaldo's and messi's and neymar's. If clubs are Not FFP bound and there is a bidding war chances are that price will be matched.

United also solely depend on Pogba for creativity, his importance in creative aspect and impact on the team is way more than maguire commands in Leicester.

The added 30m for pogba is due to the fact of him being a star category player. Teams and clubs profit financially from those qualities.

United hasn't asked 180m. We will settle for Coutinho money with some add-ons if it actually reaches that point.

Leicester are simply pricing him out of the move. Period. Ofcourse its well with in their rights but then don't say we will sell at the right price. You can just say he is not for sale.

They valued maharez for what 80-90m? Sold for 60m, when no one was ready to pay that.

Just have to accept the modern economics of football, prices are going through the roof due to all the money swilling around from tv. Let’s be honest, i’d be unhappy if we accepted anything less than £50m for Gomes or Greenwood after seeing them today. Game has gone bonkers, and i’d half expect a bid to come in for one of them as plenty will have been watching/scouting.

World cup semi finalist. Say what you want but when did England last reach the semi finals of a world cup?
75 million seems reasonable if Bissaka goes for 50 million. Remember Leicester don't have to sell.

I was thinking I'm the only United fan who thinks Smalling is the best of what we currently have.
Lindelöf seems to suddenly be thought of as excellent, when for me, he's just moved up a notch from liability.

Smalling and Maguire would give us a lot of aerial power in a combo for the first time in years, as well as Smalling's pace back there.

Either way if Maguire is really pushing at his end for the move, all the better. Wouldn't surprise me, as he's seen the move collapse last summer, if it happens again he might have permanently missed the boat.
No you are not alone. Smalling is our best defender, not our best footballer but a solid defender. Has pace and is fantastic in the air.

Firstly no one knows the exact figure we are asking but when you look at the £100m+ players who have been sold in recent times would Pogba stick out if he was added to it? I don’t think so regardless of the feeling towards him on this board he’s a world class player who would walk into any team.

Now Let’s see the prices top CBS are commanding, around £70-90m? I think that’s a fair sum. Is Maguire one of the top CB in the world? Hence they are being greedy

Leicester do not have to sell Maguire as they don't need the money so have put a crazy price on him. The crazy money in the Premier league is driving the transfer market nuts.

If you think being a World Cup semi finalist is justification of a larger fee I don’t really think I can argue. That’s your opinion on why he can command a big fee.

I personally look at the market and see players that are better than him touting similar or lower fees. It’s all subjective I suppose.

I'm just going by "reports" since that's what everyone else does and your second sentence doesn't mean they are greedy.

Nothing you said explains how Leicester are greedy and United are not. Their difference in importance is obvious by the delta in their valuations.

Probably better if you read that tweet again - " to " , "if" etc.

So yes, they are greedy and pricing him out of the move.

But the premier league teams have far more money than most.
You can't compare the De Ligt fee to Maguire.

And if getting to a world cup semi final with England isn't justification for a larger fee then neither is Pogba winning the thing with a far superior supporting cast. You can't have it both ways.
I'd say Pogba and Maguire are respectively equal in importance to their teams.

Well no one knows if the figures for Maguire are correct yet here we are discussing it and claiming Leicester are greedy.

You're moving goalposts. What center mid has been ever sold for anything think close to 180m? Maguire is first choice English international, not some complete unknown. He might not be VVD but then again NOBODY expected VVD to be as good as he's been.

So no, they are not being greedy. Reports of his valuation have been consistent.

Deligt 60-70m, Umtiti? 50 max, Eder militiao? 50m VVD 75 m having signed a 5 year contract 6 months earlier and Liverpool receiving huge money for Coutinho in similar circumstances. What makes Maguire worth 90 and fair and realistic? It's not.

Leicester will be pricing him out of the move and standing in his growth at that price. United ain't matching 90m what so ever, 70m is steep anyway. Its the same as palace quoting 100m for Wilfried Zaha.

Leicester are well within their rights to name a price for Maguire.

His valuation is decided not by the seller but by the buyer. City have already walked away, if we do the same, clearly his valuation is less than 80m.

I think we should walk away, let's see if Ole and Woody think the same.

He is a bang average player who we would be looking to upgrade in a few years.

Very similar transfer to Lukaku where it was obvious going into it that it was never going to be a long term solution.

So we are supposed to believe the reports about Maguire and not about Pogba. Don't be obtuse. United have attached at 60m premium to an unsettled player many fans say has underperformed and should be sold, yet some of you have the audacity to brand Leicester as greedy. Be serious.

Given that a bid of £70m was rejected I think it’s fair to use that as a good starting point.

I also don’t see how I’m moving the goal posts. When you have Neymar go for €200m. Coutinho for €130m I think it’s fair to say Pogba could command a fee somewhere in the middle. He’s just that good.

Also I hear everyone say no one knew VVD was going to be “this good” did anyone watch him play?! Koulibaly, whenever I’ve watched him play, looks a different kettle of fish. Ive never thought that when I’ve watched Maguire. Yet both are priced similarly.

Now I’m not saying maguires club shouldn’t try to get the best price for him but anything past £60m is them being greedy and it’s going to price him out of a move. Which may suit them as they’ll keep the player who, from reports, sounds like he wants a move

Exactly. And Leicester are trying to get the max amount just like we're trying to pay the least.
M
It’s a concept some of these posters just can’t comprehend... I think it’s probably their lack of maturity.

Leicester are trying to build a team, and don’t want to sell him, they are entitled to ask whatever amount of money they want for him. The PL rights mean Leicester have no pressure to sell, they don’t need to balance the books.

They don’t have to sell him, just because we want to buy him.
