They're overrating Evans if anything
From what I saw last season Evans actually impressed me more defensively. Maguire attracts a lot of attention for his ball playing abilities that's a big reason why.

WOW! I cannot believe this.

1 hour ago Caf was all about just pay the money.

Now that is agreed, fans on here are saying he is not good enough.

Ffs, just be positive for once.
The people who said "just pay the money" are not the same people who say he's not good enough.

What are you talking you? The 80m we just paid has been quoted since May. Trying to haggle for 5-10m doesn’t make sense. We just wasted 2 months doing it. We are ready to spend 70m and didn’t want to spend an extra 10m to make it 80m. It’s not like we were ready to spend only 40m and they are asking for another 50m on top of that.
its called negotiations. It sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. AWB was quoted at 60+ mil, we got him for 45+ mil. It worked there. For Maguire, it obviously didn't work. You simply can't go around paying the quoted price right away.

Seriously, why are people moaning about the fee?

We've got ourselves a top CB, one of the best in the country, be happy for once.

Smile, cheer, masturbate, whatever. Just be fecking happy.

A bit late reporting it, but the BBC now have the deal and claiming £80M. So maybe Ed did save us £5M after all.

I know it's not the done thing to have a newcomer in the position, but given the utter dearth of leaders in our squad I'd not be upset to see him given the armband too.

Even if not, leadership in defensive positions is what I've had to blame for most of our defensive woes over the last few years, so even without the armband I think he might be transformative. Not so much for his own play, as for organising everyone else. I've long thought that most of our defenders would look twice the player if they had an organiser next to them.

Mostly because the price limits the scope for signings in other needed areas of the pitch.

Its not about the amount. It’s the fannying around when Ole needed the best possible preparations.

No AWB was also quoted for 50m for the longest time and we spent 3 weeks there try to negotiate for 5-10m again. We ll give 35+15. Then we ll give 40+10. Then we ll give 45+5. Alright fine we ll just you the 50m.

Evans is a good player but he seriously lost his Mojo with United, it was best he left.

Maguire is clearly the better player in every department.

Interesting sky sports are showing a few clips now, and balls into the space behind him he seems to deal with just fine recovering well and using his strength to block the route to goal.

God knows how Pallister and Blanc got by
I never saw Pallister.

But Blanc had a rough time. You could clearly see he was over the hill.

I understand, but surely we should be getting behind our new CB?

Tbh me included in the last week have been moaning about our lack of transfer activity. But I am not going to start saying what a waste of money when we do spend it.

Shocking right? It's almost like there are different people on the Internet. I thought it was one big collective consciousness making all these posts

Why the feck didn't we sign him for Mourinho then? This club sometimes! :houllier:
You overestimate this club.

We waited for Fellaini's release clause to expire before buying him for close to £30 million.

We sent some fake agents to Bilbao to sign Herrera before his transfer fell through.

We dawdled signing Ronaldinho for £25 million before he signed for Barca and became a world class player.

We agreed to sign Kroos before reneging on the signing when we got a new manager.

It's just how we roll.

Firstly Kompany wasn’t as slow as Maguire. Even if he was, at his prime he was world class and one of the top 10 defenders in the world. Doubt Maguire is anything close to that as of yet.
I thought he meant Kompany from last season or last couple of seasons. Not the prime Kompany who was more than fine pace wise.

Let's see if this whole defence wins titles bollocks is true. We've spunked 130m on two defenders this summer, once again neglecting the attack for the most part. We'll see how far it takes us.

Watching Smalling & Jones play the ball out of the back week in home and away last season, i can tell you that the ball playing ability will upgrade the team as a whole massively.

I've never seen a more awkward professional's technique then Smalling playing a pass, mans like a compass pivots on one leg its bizarre.

Great to get this over the line. Hopefully dybala agrees to join. I just hope Utd have one or two midfielders lined up. BUt will we spend any money on the midfield after this Maguire transfer?

A toast to all the Leicester fans on the Caf, who we probably won't see until the next transfer saga where they can tell us how we bully them and how our club is basically going down the drain, so no ambitious player would join us.

Well, can't say I'm excited by this signing to say the least
At the beginning of the window I thought that too, but at least he's the player who genuinely wants to play for Manchester United. He may be not Varane or De Ligt, but he'll give us his best.

Good defender, good age, English, brings in exactly what we lacked from our CBs. He will be successful with us. I don't care if we concede a few goals from his over-eagerness to move the ball forward. I am just glad I don't have to watch 90 mins of our CB just booting the feck out of the ball or passing a low weighted ball to their respective fullbacks, thereby killing any momentum before it even begins.

Big mood
Excellent however someone needs to photoshop Ed’s face in to that. Effectively this is how I imagine Ed is anyway when he’s back at the Ed Mansion hitting with different Instagram models every night. Throwing big baller parties and having little mix perform then having them take some Snow off his little Ed.

So glad it’s over with. We’ve been shafted but who cares, we’ve got a solid CB who’s proven in the PL.

Our back 4 could be consistent for the next 5+ years.

Let's be honest lads, that fee is an utter joke. He'll want to be putting in 8/9/10/10 performances the majority of the time or there's going to be huge pressure.

Any player that keeps Jones and Rojo out of the starting lineup is worth every cent of the 80m in my opinion. We were ever going to progress as a team with a backline that flimsy.
130m to not see Young, Jones and Smalling play together is absolutely worth it.
