Does anyone remember when we played Hull like 3 times in 10 days a few years ago?

I'm not sure that he played all 3 of those games, but I remember him absolutely bossing it at the time. He was passing it out from the back and bringing it into midfield like it was nothing. I was blown away by him. When he joined Leicester I strongly felt that he was above a 'stepping stone' move like that. And he was.

I honestly believe that he is a shade below world class, and he can become that here. Second to VVD in the Premier league. No one else is better. This signing does have the potential to single handedly transform us. I also think he's captain material.
Yep! That’s when I rated him, I was surprised Jose didn’t go for him when hull got relegated.

Oh thanks, must be a new rule I remember not so long ago an Arsenal team starting in the UCL without a single english player in the starting XI.
Well Arsenal usually sign them very young and they spend a few yrs in the academy, which counts. "British" is just a more convenient term in that list because very few of them are raised and trained abroad, if any.

I predict he'll become a cult hero for you guys.

Of course everyone mentions the price tag but if you actually scour world football for another centre back that ticked every single box your needs required:
Home grown
Leader
Strong
Comfortable with ball
PL experienced
Left-sided

He was worth paying for.
I don’t really care what he costs but good for Leicester that you got the fee you were after.

I’ll just add that having an experienced English PL proven player, who has also climbed his way up the ladder is something we needed in our squad full of millennial snowflakes.

I’m assuming McGuire is very vocal on the field and holds his teammates accountable. Hoping he can become OGS’s Keane.

Long shot but I'd love to see McHarry Guire get 45mins tomorrow. Being a friendly maybe registering players is a bit more relaxed.... Doubt it though

Maguire cost us £14m and Hull have a 15% sell on
Assuming you pay £45m for Dunk, that puts your profit at £15.35m, so he still pretty much nailed it.

It also makes it pretty clear why you lot held out for such a high fee. At £70m quid, you'd have been left with just enough to get Dunk, and that would have been a shit deal.

Maguire is a great signing but Leicester got a fantastic deal here, £80M. though I think we will also be happy with it.
It’s a good deal for everyone involved. We’ve plugged a hole, Leicester can reinvest, Maguire can play for a club he wanted to play for. Most big teams go out and buy the players they need and sometimes the players they don’t even need.

But De Gea is neither vocal nor commanding, or inspirational for that matter. Shambolic choice.
Seniority plays a role. He says he would love to captain us and it would be an honor. Think he deserves a shout for spending almost a decade here.

He’s not had a medical and he hasn’t sign so technically and officially, he isn’t our player yet. He cannot play tomorrow

No, sorry, missed the bit about “half the price.” Agree. I think some of those would be available for 60m though.
Which ones?
De Ligt had an offer and chose Juventus.
We aren't signing rival players, so VvD and Laporte is pointless to argue about.
We don't need old defenders, so Ramos, Bonucci & Chiellini are out of the question.
Varane & Koulibaly (and Gimenez with his 120m euro release clause) will not go for 60 million or less. Hell, they won't go for 80 million either.
You can't sign players PSG don't want to get rid of, unless their contract is out, that rules out Marquinhos (as he has 3 years left on his contract).
We don't need more sick-notes, so Umtiti is not someone that should have been considered.
All in all that leaves Gimenez, who got his release clause increased from 65 million euros to 120 million euros in 2018.

Do you watch Ajax, Liverpool, City, Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, Juventus and Atletico Madrid enough to actually pass judgement so easily on who is better and more suited to the club?

Nah I know, I was actually just messing around. Just really wanted to joke around with the spelling of his name so made a post with his name mentioned

Strange list. From them:
- play for close rivals so not for sale to us: VVD , Laporte
- just joined other clubs: De Ligt
- injury prone as shite so not needed even for free: Umtiti
- over 45 years old (or thereabouts): Ramos, Chielinni, Bonucci, Gimenez

What do we have left? Right, only TWO players - Varane and Koulibaly. Each of them would have cost us MUCH more than Maguire (with Varane likely not attainable in principle)
We’ve already bought him. I don’t disagree that we’d never get most of the players listed for various reasons. Is Maguire a top 10 CB in Europe? No. Am I stoked that we bought him? Yes. Is he an upgrade? Yes, I think so.

No criticism from me on the purchase, just sharing my thoughts of which CBs I rate above him.

I think it's a fair price for a defender who will be head and shoulders above any of our current lot. Far better to spend £80m on a sure thing than the punts we were taking at around the £35 - 40m mark and being left with players on high wages who we couldn't shift.

holding out was more about showing clubs if you want our players you're going to have to pay well over the odds so they don't come after them

technically he could as a trialist with our permission
Why'd you care how much he went for? Your owner is rich so don't really need the money. We're one of the wealthiest clubs in the world so can afford the fee.

Why does the fee matter?
did I say I cared? I simply gave some factual corrections

No issue with the buy. Being homegrown is also a plus. Just sharing the CBs I prefer over Maguire. He’s a good player.

Admittedly, did not watch a lot of Ajax, but did watch at least 5-10 matches of each of the others just this last season, and maybe 30 matches each over the last 3-4 years.

Marquinhos is not a quality DM, I like him much more as a CB. Same with Javi Martinez on Bayern.

It's maybe a £15m overpay, but that's the market when you're trying to get a player that Leicester had no need to sell. He's not the defender VVD is, but I think he's one of the best defenders in the world on the ball and that has tremendous value for us as we've struggled to build out from the back since Vidic and Ferdinand moved on. Additionally he will allow Lindelof to move over to RCB where he's far more comfortable in possession which is another additional benefit to this transfer.

Get in! It was about damn time... At least he is used to the league and the lack of preseason might not affect him as much

Behind the right goal post as "Whiteside shoots!"
That’s fair yes. I am quite sure he will not reach the Van Dijk level at United as I think he’s just a very good defender with only his ability on the ball as a difference between him and quite a few others at midtable teams, but I do agree that he’ll immediately improve your defence and that’s what you needed. Still though, €93m...
Sterling Euros isn't that rate.

And the rate is lower now compared to when you got VD (so makes differential smaller).

And United will buy currencies (especially Euros) in advance or have Forex trades as a minimum.

Here comes the Smalling hate it seems. Won’t be surprised to see him back in the team in November like every time we’ve signed a new CB.

I’m happy with him as 3rd choice. How many 3rd choice CB’s are better than Smalling?

Delighted with this. The price doesn't matter as long as he proves to be a success.

Our defence looks a totally different animal with Wan-Bissaka and Maguire in it.

Aren't United on the NYSE. That means we trade in dollars so BOJO becoming PM just made this deal as cheap as chips.

Very happy with the signing, always liked Maguire. Pity we had to pay the 25% Manchester Utd tax but what are you going to do.
Well we also had to pay for Leicester 15% they will have to pay Hull.

Let’s say they sign Dunk for £45m. Plus £12m to Hull. That gives them £23m profit. Seems fair to me.

I don't understand why fans of teams from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, City and Spurs are laughing at the fee. This will set a precedent for centre back values going forward just like the van Dijk transfer did and will effect them trying to buy players in the future

Very skeptical. So much money for a player who is not really taking us to the next level. Maguire is a good player, but he's no Van Dijk. Still think our transfer strategy is way, way off.

Our defence looks a lot better than it did.

AWB-Lindelof-Maguire-Shaw is a big upgrade on anything with Young, Jones, Darmian in it.

Put his ability to one side for a moment, from the sound of Rodgers latest interview, Maguire is the kind of guy we need in our squad!

VVD wasn't this VVD before he joined Liverpool.
