''Subject to personal terms being agreed''

You've got to love the fact that football continues to maintain this facade that personal terms are not in most cases agreed with the player long before the first bid is even lodged.

People focusing on just the money and not the talent he brings over our mediocre CB group will go silent once they see what it's like to have a competent CB pairing for the first time since Rio and Vidic (no i'm not saying Lindelof and Maguire are comparable to those two, i'm saying we can actually now focus on building a competent pairing for the first time since them). We've been so brainwashed into accepting "hands in back smalling" and "Meme-jones" for so long, that maguire and lindelof only have to be competent to be drastically better.

Same with that minority of the fanbase that had the vapours over AWB's fee yet have gone conveniently silent after seeing what it's like to have a competent RB, after being brainwashed into accepting Young for about 5 years too long.

Erm. The Dybala deal we are working on? Everything is agreed with the club but not with the player.

Yes, he is.
VVD is the best CB in the world right now, I think everybody can agree with that. Maguire in my opinion is not even on the top 10.

VVD
Ramos
Godin
Chiellini
Koulibally
Thiago Silva
Varane
De Ligt
Lenglet
Laporte
Umtiti

He's down to the fine details now, so he doesn't have to sit opposite Jesse in the dressing room and watch him dab, whilst trying to figure out how he's actually younger than young Jesse.

He is too 5 in the league and to get that list together we had to list too many players deep into their 30s or highly injury prone. Of players the right side of 30 there aren't many you would prefer

According to Luckhurst, Smalling is already being offered to clubs because he can't pass beyond 5 yards without dislocating a hip. In other words, he doesn't fit our new style of play. Fine defender, though.
Sounds like Bs. The kind non-united fans don't know why it is, but we do. There are like 5 different reasons Smalling probably won't be the first defender out the door

Why does this even matter? We've bought him (almost).... Time to get behind him. He's the best we can buy (without being able to offer Champions League football and he doesn't need time to get adjusted to the league and more importantly, he's younger than more than half of the people of that list. He would improve our defense and compliment Lindelof and that's what matters.

All those lists prove to me one thing, there aren't really many top defenders in the world right now.

Absolutely zero basis for Lenglet, Varane, or Ramos to rate as better than Maguire currently. Godin and Chiellini also seemed to have dropped a level when I saw them last year.

Yes Im not saying that everyone of those players would had been a better choice, mostly because of their age.

But I find odd the world record was broken for Maguire and not for De Ligt who is the second coming of Jesus according to many here.

He makes up that list and doesn’t even put Pique up there.

Price isn't value I guess. De ligt agent might get 10m more than Maguires and wages seemed to be a sticking point ... it is hard to believe barce wouldn't just lay it to keep de jong and de ligt together though

De Ligt had agreement with Ajax that he could leave and they wouldn’t push for crazy fees. He could have left in the last few years but stayed where as Maguire signed a long term contract last September.

Think it's more to do with getting him to the club to do the physical and signing a actual contract (photo op one). I am sure everything in principal with the player has been agreed already

Agreed. The hate some 'supporters' have rubbishing every player we buy.

throwing together random lists is a useless exercise. United wanted a ball-playing defender who can come in pretty much tomorrow and stabilize the defense. Sure, we could have gone for a younger player like Ruben Diaz and it'd have saved some money, but we've seen how long Lindelöf took to settle in. Can't afford that really, we need top 4 - so you bring in someone who knows the league. Maguire checked all the boxes and therefore was pretty much the only one on our list. Leicester knew it and played their hand well, but in the end, we get the player we wanted and needed. Expensive? Yes. But the alternatives (settling for somebody else or going into the season without a new CB) were a lot worse, so I'm super happy.

Lenglet I agree we can have a debate, but Ramos and Varane are on another level. Not even close.

Godin and Chiellini are declining obviously and every year will be worst than the last one, but currently they are IMO better than Maguire. Not meaning Maguire cant reach those levels, after all 18 months ago I wouldn’t have considered VVD on my top 5 list.

I’ve never really rated Pique. Yes he is technically gifted but purely defensive wise I don’t think he is rock solid. Again its just my opinion, that’s what forums are for isnt it?

These days i'd say that is one of the rarer instances where personal terms have't been agreed weeks in advance.

I don't think United went into this window with Dybala as a target. I reckon thats only came about as an opportunity because of Juve wanting Lukaku.

No doubt mate thats what i'm talking about, United and his agent will have already agreed personal terms weeks if not months ago.

Let's see him play for us before we write him off or get too worked up over fee. 130m spent to hugely improve our leaking defence isn't bad. Now we need to sell a couple and hope ole has got it right. Great to have a leader back there

Not the biggest fan of slabhead but let's be honest, if City had bought him for 70m, the moaners would have him solidly in their top 10 CBs.

And obviously Pep has wanted him for 2 transfer windows running, though not at this price.

Very skeptical. So much money for a player who is not really taking us to the next level. Maguire is a good player, but he's no Van Dijk. Still think our transfer strategy is way, way off.
Sums up everything that is wrong with our club at the moment, we could have picked him up for 17m two years ago but no, we can't see the potential so we pay five times the price now. Paying a world record fee for a CB that doesn't exactly set the world on fire, he's good but not amazing. How many top clubs in Europe would crave him as desperately as we have if they needed a CB, few if any I'd say. I just can't get excited about this even though he will improve our defence.

Glad to see this finally get over the line (pending all the official confirmation stuff blah blah blah). Huge improvement on our current options imo, and he combined with Wan Bissaka make us look a lot more solid on paper than we were. Hopefully we can get a regular back four going, and see De Gea return to form too. That would make a huge difference to us. Nice added set piece threat too.

As for the fee, well it does feel like we've been taking advantage of by Leicester. Absolutely outrageous money for a defender who, despite being someone I rate quite a lot, isn't exactly proven at the absolute top. But sure look, if he does the business for us and makes all the difference we'll say its well worth it.

Big signings like this make the season all the more exciting. Bring on next weekend.
