Why was he marking Westergaard anyway? Shouldn't a lump that size be Maguire's man?

Lindelof is garbage in the air, but I don't blame him for that goal, because Westergaard is enormous.

But Lindelof lost a couple more headers against players smaller than him when he had the better positioning and the ball was coming from face on, and today isn't an isolated occurrence. He keeps doing it. He is piss weak in the air. Honestly, Daley Blind was more commanding in the air than Lindelof. Blind didn't get bullied by players smaller than him, and put up a good fight against those who were bigger than him.

awk stop talking bollocks. It’s clear in the height disparity between Lindelof and Vestergaard. It was hardly an outrageous mistake... :wenger:
If all that mattered was height disparity then Vestegaard would be scoring every week, he isn't though. Lindelof was positioned poorly under the ball, he got up poorly, he wasn't even winning the header without Vestegaard there he got up so poorly, and he stopped Vestegaard's run poorly. He did nothing at all to impede him. It was a mistake on every single part of the play.

He had a free header, because Lindelof was like he wasn’t there. Even Juan Mata would do more to put pressure and try to upset Vestergaard.
It was a standing jump against a player much taller than him, off the perfect delivery. Maybe Lindelof could have adjusted better, but Vestergaard had a clear advantage going into the duel.

I thought Lindelof was supposed to give us that needed edge going forward though? Doing things like making passes that might lead to assists, or even goals? Not only would Smalling have made sure to not lose that header, he has also shown the mentality to actually contribute with the winning goal late in matches not dissimilar to this one. Lindelof however is constantly putting pressure on our own defence by making risky moves with little benefit to the positive outcome. The risk-reward is absolute rubbish to accept such play. At least when Smalling panics he makes sure to actually clear the ball to safety, not gift the opposition possession.

I don't really see much of a difference in their use of the ball either, when comparing the two. Smalling have made a whole lot of penetrative passes and gone on good runs before. He has got slaughtered forever for a few mistakes each season, mistakes that Lindelof seemingly makes on a weekly basis.
Just nonsense. Lindelof is just this seasons Felliani. Not saying he's the answer but he's just that go to person when we lose football matches. A guy 4 inches taller than him win the header in the six yard box and the loss is all on him.

Nonsense. I don't care how you set yourself, the guy he's jumping up against is 4 inches taller which will give him the advantage.
I don’t think it is nonsense that he could have done better he can get his head on the ball first and render the attackers header as much more difficult to pull off. He misreads the flight of the ball a bit and allows the Southampton player a header under no pressure. Their only body contact comes from the Southampton player’s momentum into him and it’s only slight.

Rubbish. Vestegaard won headers all over the pitch today, just this on lead to a goal. Why not call the other players that he lost headers to?

He did some things well today for sure. Unfortunately, that counts for little when he makes the kinds of mistakes he’s made the last two weeks. He’s clearly cost us a goal (and points) in each of the last two games. Personally, I think he needs to be held accountable for that. He should sit down and watch next week. I don’t think it will happen, though. I think Ole will stick with him, wanting a stable back four and not wanting to further damage his confidence.

People are really giving him a pass because the other player was taller?

That’s football, he’s always going to be targeted because it’s easier going up against him than Maguire. You still have to deal with it, maybe not winning the header but at least make it difficult.

He’s the same height as John Terry yet does anyone think he’s losing that header so easily? No.

The cross comes in and he's outjumped by the taller guy. That's it. Don't turn it into what happen last week cause it wasn't. Goals are scored and not all are preventable. I get it if he hadn't jumped.

This. And this is not a fluke for him, he has a history of not defending headers well due to misreading the flight of the ball.

He’s right, he’s under the flight of the ball, it’s a free header for Vestegaard. The mistake is allowing him to score with no pressure.

That run out with the ball and giveaway should have lead to the equalizer 5 mins earlier than it came and effectively created the momentum that brought it.

So John Terry, Rio or Harry have never conceded goals cause they were out jumped?

He's being given a free pass by those people because thats how he's always been treated. Free pass should be his nickname.

The sad thing is that we don't really have a choice now, the only other option is Tuanzebe, where we have no idea how that will play out.... I thinkg we all know how the options will play out.

On the actual goal, i'm not sure there's much he could've done there. The guy he was up against is an absolute mountain. It was a great ball back in and that was that really. He was never gonna win that header against him.

The ball goes over his head before Vestegaard even touches it. He misses the ball without Vestegaard there.

He can join Smalling in Rome if he'll keep playing like that.

Maybe he's still somewhat young, but there should really be some standards in the team, that players cannot drop below.

Thats the positive. We dont know how it'll play out, but he looked no worse than Lindelof in preseason so he deserves a chance. If he plays any worse than Lindelof is playing his team probably wouldnt have got promoted to the premier league last season

No one else gave him a free header 6 yards out. What is rubbish is thinking he is unmarkable simply because he is tall. He isn't scoring goals every week because believe it or not, it is possible to mark players a couple inches bigger than you.

Sure, give him a chance, I have really nothing against it, but you have to admit that it is a problem that now our only other option is a youth player without Premierleague experience. With Smalling we at least knew that we would improve defensively, even if the ball movemet would be worst (but it's not like that would be a game changer in this tim).

If being taller is a right to win every header and get your shot on goal, Fellaini should have been our top scorer for 6 years on the bounce. Does David Moyes have tens of accounts here or something?

Lukaku would also have been a big success here instead of us selling him on

We need to get him practicing headers every training session. He played ok but it's costing us points and Southampton were clearly targeting him on long balls. Still, we are asking for it with the way we allow teams to bombard our defence.

Great. Expect to see the same people saying Martial should have scored 5 goals a match if when the cross came in, the defender didn't out jump him and head it away.

Yes. I suggested before thats exactly why Ole let Smalling leave, so he had more excuses for playing Lindelof when he's making mistakes instead of being pressured by the fans and media to put Smalling back in everytime Lindelof messes up. Now we've sent him on loan and for a fee, he's simply not an option

Headers are lost all over the pitch, that's nothing new. Lindelof might not be the answer but the stuff posted about that goal today is bullshit and just agended cause people don't rate him...

Aye one of the best defenders to ever play the game is just making stuff up because he doesn't like Lindelof.

More likely is you lack basic understanding of how to challenge aerially. Funnily enough, just like Lindelof does.

Yes they are. And mistakes are made all over the pitch. But when you make them in your own penalty area as a CB thats poor. You cannot do that. Thats part of the position.

If he was playing DM and losing a header in midfield it wouldnt be a huge deal. Ander didnt win many headers. But he's a CB allowing his opponent to head the ball wherever he likes and it finds the back of the net.

What you are saying is pure nonsense, honestly. You want to falsely portray Lindelof as this teams scapegoat. Seriously? It can't possibly have anything to do with the fact he has lost 2 important duels that directly led to goal two games in succession? Do you think him not being athletic enough to either, out-jump, outmuscle, or even outsmart a taller player to get an edge, is acceptable because he is kind of short for his position? The irony of naming Fellaini, because people always blamed him for things he had no control over, like his height. You are using the same concept to defend Lindelof just now.

I actually rate him in everything, except aerially. But he is weak in aerial duels and we have seen it consistently. I think its too big a weakness at CB.

It's beacuse he is to soft. Rafael was short, but even he would try to make it hard for the attacker to score.

I think that Lindelof has actully problems with balls that fly a bit longer, as he seems quite bad when it comes to judging where the ball will land. I really don't think that he is a bad player, but he isn't the right player for the Premierleague and for this United.

He's the CB equivalent of a striker who can control the ball and find a simple pass to link up with teammates but can't shoot on target.

Rio illustrated exactly how he was at fault post match, and i don't think he is an agenda driven caf poster

Btw. I don't think that he is the biggest weakness this team has, but from the things we could fix after the transfer deadline, I think he was the biggest weakness (now we maybe can't even fix it anymore).
