the dark knight is a great superhero movie, but it's a bit mental for it to be considered as one of the best movies of all time. people clearly don't watch enough films if that's the case. i mean, if it didn't have super heroes in it, it would just be a good action flick. and there are some parts of it that are downright stupid (using everyone's mobile phones to track someone down? eh?). heath obviously makes this movie stand out beyond any other superhero movie though.

Yeah still not sold on this or Phoenix. Will probably end up seeing it anyway but it doesn’t really look anything special or good. Absolutely hate the aesthetic of his joker. Really think it’s going to be a massive let down.

Again a brilliant trailer. Definitely seeing an Oscar nomination for Phoenix for this.

I hate superhero stuff as I've always preferred the villains, but only Batman's as they were more fun. Naturally the Joker was top of my list so really looking forward to it. I didn't watch Suicide Squad cos of Leto and didn't want to hate the character.

Also saw this on Reddit and cracked me up. Phoenix said to get into character "I watched videos of people suffering from pathological laughter, a neurological disorder that makes individuals laugh uncontrollably."

Someone then commented: poor guy watched a lot of Jimmy Fallon

So this Joker is part of the DCEU movies and will totally cancel off Jared Leto's Joker?
Unfortunately, there are (or were, at least) several projects in development for Leto's Joker. There were rumors earlier this year that they had been dropped, but it was never confirmed so I'm fearing the worst.

If this one is a success, and people love Phoenix' take on the character, it's going to be awkward if they roll out a bunch of movies with the disliked Leto-Joker.

Has a comic book based movie ever had one of its actors nominated for an Oscar tho? I'm probably happened and I'm forgetting about the obvious.
Ledger won posthumously for playing the very same character.

Really looking forward to this as a massive Batman fan, but I think it'll end up getting panned due to not having the same origin as the comics tend to use.

It's quite tough trying to stay cool instead of getting overhyped over this. Both trailers were outstanding.

I just love both the actor they picked and the direction they are taking with Joker. Not some cartoonish dude turned villain by some freakish chemical accident. But a mentally unstable, alienated man becoming more embittered and angry day by day. I think that's much more scary and real.

Not sure I trust a guy who cast himself to suck a girl's toes to treat mental illness leading to murderous tendencies with the requisite care.

It's supposedly a King of Comedy/Taxi Driver rip, but the Joker character doesn't really mesh well with those at all.

The fecker is gonna win an Oscar.
He’s one of the outstanding actors of his generation imo. Him and Christian Bale are two from the 35-55 age group that have consistently delivered big performances from challenging leading roles without an Oscar to show for it. So I will cheer him if he does win it.

Why not?

Competition is weak this year so it's very possible to for him to steal the show. Only maybe Di Caprio from OUATIH could be a threat. But as big of a fan I am of him. I put my money on Phoenix winning it.

Truth like rain don't give a feck who it falls on.
This looks really boring. Is it even tied to Batman in any way or him being a mass criminal with diabolical schemes or is it just about some guy that is a bit sad and wears face paint. I don't get anything from him that says 'The Joker'.

Bale does have an Oscar for supporting role from The Fighter.

It's an origin story about how he became a mass criminal, rather than of him being a mass criminal. It's classified as Drama/Crime/Psychological Thriller.

Bale does have an Oscar for supporting role from The Fighter.
I know, hence I used the words "leading roles" ;)

Leto has joined the Sony superheroes (villain?) as Morpheus. I feel this is a sign that he’s been binned as Joker.

Morbius and he is scheduled for two more outings as the Joker. One in a Joker story and one in a Harley Quinn movie but not the emancipation of Harley Quinn.

Nicholson was nominated for a golden globe and a bafta for playing the Joker. No Oscar nomination though.

I thought this was blindingly obvious from the 2 trailers without any reading on the plot at all.
It is but people are still bemused that a film about a comic book villain won't be all about maniacal schemes, big kabooms and non-stop action.

Just IGN, but a 10/10 on reviews so far. Phoenix unsurprisingly knocked it out of the park by all accounts. (I don’t recall any but possible mild spoilers)

Seems to chime with my worries (spoilery review)

Todd Phillips’ “Joker” is unquestionably the boldest reinvention of “superhero” cinema since “The Dark Knight”; a true original that’s sure to be remembered as one of the most transgressive studio blockbusters of the 21st Century. It’s also a toxic rallying cry for self-pitying incels, and a hyper-familiar origin story so indebted to “Taxi Driver” and “The King of Comedy” that Martin Scorsese probably deserves an executive producer credit. It’s possessed by the kind of provocative spirit that’s seldom found in any sort of mainstream entertainment, but also directed by a glorified edgelord who lacks the discipline or nuance to responsibly handle such hazardous material, and who reliably takes the coward’s way out of the narrative’s most critical moments.
