He was ok.

I have no clue why the commentators keep saying he cost us £60 mil.

Ability wise he is our second best midfielder. The guy can actually pass and dribble. Don't understand this obsession with putting McTominay further up the pitch than Fred. It is pretty clear that Fred is far more creative than him, which is not hard to be fair.

Surprisingly, from my perspective, he actually made a really positive difference. Our use of the ball in midfield visibly improved. I admit, given how crap it was before his introduction, that's not saying too much. However, it was a pleasant surprise to see Fred a) not totally left behind by the pace of a Premier League game; b) improve us. Fingers crossed he shows me up for writing him off by kicking on from his average (at best) first season.
He's never been left behind by the pace of a premier league game, where do people get these ideas from. He lost possession once or twice in dangerous positions for us last season and due to that he's been completely written off, which is ridiculous. Other than those few errors he's been pretty good whenever he's played.

He needs defensive cover behind him to thrive but he is a very good creative player. When he defends he often plants himself and that makes him very easy to bypass.

His incisive passes and energy are just what we are lacking in midfield.

He set up one good chance for Pereira in the short time he was on, which got wasted unfortunately.

Hopefully we get to see a lot more of him from now on.

Not sure we have the right protection for him. He has a lot of similarities to Pogba.
He played in a pivot at Shakhtar just fine didn't he? I think it's a coaching issue. It's the same with all our talent to be fair. We haven't had a competent framework or coaching to maximise the talent and it's been the same for how many years now.

There's a quality player there in him, we see glimpses of it, but we just need to provide the right platform.

The right platform is to play him in a 3, with Mctominay and Pogba.

Under a tree.
Said it before, I have my reservation about him being the long term solution, but when he plays there is much more composure in the midfield.
Given what else is there is he is a must at the moment. Playing Matic is a invitation for other team to attack

Hoping he can kick on. Our midfield defo had more energy about it when he came on and its something weve lacked especially in second half of games.

The problem is, bar Matic, all of our CMs do, and Matic looks done.

Maybe he could thrive in a 3 as the dlp next to McTominay as the b2b and Pogba as a 8/10 hybrid like in Ole's first games. Or maybe Tuanzebe can be moulded into a DM to compensate for our lack of one.

Glad he’s finally been released from his preseason jail.

Hopefully can play this Thursday also and get some real minutes into him.

Is like to see a Fred, mctominay and pogba midfield being given a shot. On paper at least, it seems to have a bit of everything

He did ok.

When he came on, McTominay pushed higher up and Fred dropped deep. But then Fred got caught out of position a couple of times, so Ole brought on Tuanzebe to play as the holding midfielder instead.

I'm still struggling to figure out what role he should have in our midfield. He has some quality, but also a few glaring weaknesses.
Sorry but I read nonsense. That’s not the reason why Ole brought on Axel.

Our problem is we don't have a competent defensive mid.

Unless you mean McTominay alongside Fred in a pivot with Pogba in attacking mid. That could work maybe.

Fred is never a United player in a million years, but you could say that about 80% of this team, so we just accept the low standards we have now set for ourselves, and begun to accept as normal.

Yes that's exactly what I mean, Mctominay and Fred behind Pogba.

He was settling into our team well after finally being given a consistent run, with standout performances against PSG & Arsenal, but he made a couple mistakes and all that has seemed to have been forgotten now.

I would be interested to see him in the number ten role more. His pressing would put opposing playmakers under pressure and potentially disrupt teams who pass out from the back.

Mctominay Pogba
James Fred Rashford
Martial

Yeah that could be promising. Pogba wouldn't have the problem of being starved of service further forward with Fred behind him i think. Matić's legs being finished is what let us down when he played that role.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Fred's good games last season did tend to be when he had McTominay next to him rather than Matic, so now that McTominay has established himself ahead of Matic in the pecking order hopefully that'll help Fred settle. Play those two along with Pogba and if it works we suddenly might have a decent midfield.

All of Fred's best performances have come next to McTominay, and the reverse is fairly true as well. Alongside Pogba it's the only real functioning midfield option we have.

So true. McTominay must be one of.the first names on the teamsheet now.
I prefer Fred to Matic - mainly because the latter seems out of shape for some time.

What I like about Fred is that he's always showing for the ball, he's always making an angle or getting around his marker to make the player in possession's job easier. He had a horrible start to his United career, but I was happy to see him get on today and hope to see him playing a more prominent role soon.

Had a good cameo. His tenacity will be very useful in the pressing part of our plan. I really think he should play alongside Pogba and Scott in a midfield 3 with Scott playing Deeper and Pogba and Fred interchanging between staying alongside Scot and playing the number 10 role

Thought he done pretty well when he came on. Certainly offered a lot more than the man he replaced - Matic.

Hopefully he starts midweek against Astana.

Fred, McT and Pogba is the only midfield we should be playing, IMO. They are the only three players we have that are (perhaps) capable of putting in a performance that befits a Man Utd player. I’d actually like to see a diamond formation with Angel Gomes at the top end and Martial and Rashford upfront but Daniel James is looking like he’s gonna be hard to drop.....

We’ve got so many square pegs in round holes!

Was better than Matic and that means he should start vs West Ham but will probably start against Astana instead.

Still maintain he's potentially our most important player. A mobile defensive screen which he and McTombele would provide will allow Pogba to push up and dictate our attack.

Hopefully this is the performance which consigns Matic to the dustbin of history.

He had a positive impact today. We were struggling in the second half until he and Chong came on. Hopefully he is given more game time because he's a better player than Matic.

Hopefully Ole can finally open his eyes on Fred after today. Fred is more suitable playing deeper role than Pogba. Both him & McTomminay bring a lot of energy & playing exactly what I thought Ole wants in his high press, high energy & counter attack system. Pogba should be left further forward as a no 10 not playing him deep, let Pogba create the final third pass because he’s top at it with both Fred & McTomminay support him from behind.

McTomminay - Fred
———- Pogba ——-
