That’s a Republican spin. The result was that she has some Native American ancestry from between 6 and 10 generations ago but the test can’t be more specific. So obviously the Republicans picked the biggest possible number to use as an attack.
I thought it was a pretty funny reference to the election year.

But actual tribal citizenship doesn't work like that at all and she has a history of disregarding the views of actual native americans.
Did she ever apply for tribal citizenship? What was this history of ignoring Native Americans views?

It’s a very simple affair that has been mucked up by her campaign.

She’s Oklahoman, probably half of the people there have Native American ancestry. She’s also a 70 year old woman, so it’s quite feasible that in the 1940s when her parents met, one of them being from a family with ‘known’ Native American ancestry, even if it’s a few generations removed, would be frowned upon by the other’s family and close relatives. At this point, we have no reason to believe that she Rachel Dolezal’d the whole thing up, knowing the story and details she gave. Many among us have some sort of fables passed down in the family about having this or that figure generations past, most never bothered to do an ancestry test to verify.

The problem stemmed from her listing her ethnicity as Native American in a few forms. Now, I can’t claim to be privy to her thoughts, but there are two possibilities here, a) she genuinely believe in the family story and proud of that, and use Caucasian/Native American interchangeably throughout her life, that we need more info to ascertain or b) she used them for diversity hire, which in the grand scheme of things either personally or professionally not a big deal, even though not savoury, especially when you take into account her circumstances, divorced with a kid to raise and being a single mom in the 60/70s.

Ignoring Trump altogether, or at worst a candid conversation with admission of the possible way the claim might have benefited her professionally would have been better than the ancestry test, but hey-ho.

Just watched Biden on Kimmel from a few days ago. I have to say he looked a lot better than he s looked on stage so far. Then again - you can say what you want about him but speaking to the "common" man is something I always believed Biden to excel at.

I can see the appeal of Bernie and Warren for sure - but politically I kind of think that a Biden/Gabbard ticket could be hugely successful - if Gabbard can steal a lot of the spotlight while Biden mumbles his way through some of the debates. But - Tulsi probably burned too many bridges with the dem establishment. Either way I hope she will be on the ticket.

I've told me US History students that we're living in a 2nd Gilded Age. More evidence for the argument from Zuckerberg there.
Seems like a pretty apt comparison. Not sure if that makes me feel any better but you know what they say about history repeating itself and things not being as bad as they used to be.
At least we don't have companies and unions owning parts of churches like they did back then. Yet. Though instead I guess we now have corporation like mega churches.

I don’t see that pairing ever happening

I agree she or her campaign mucked it up on this one. It's not at all uncommon to overestimate your Native American heritage, not necessarily just to take advantage of benefits but to feel some sort of connection to your ancestry. It can easily become overly tied to your sense of self even if you're not raised 'on the rez' and are actually quite detached from NA culture. Nor is the story of her parents being subject to racism odd, because that's still a thing.

Source: am Okie who speaks Cherokee (or at least used to), and grew up being taught there's certain places 'you just don't go' based on your skin color.

Terrible news. Not just for him personally . But maybe his campaign. Wish him a speedy recovery.

Feck. That is the most ominous thing I've seen during the primaries

Yeah it's not good - the guy is 78 years old. Really is he a viable candidate for what would be a 4 year position at a minimum?

Without him the best candidate is someone who was a Republican for 3/4 of her life, supported Ronald Reagan in the 1980s and thought releasing that ridiculous Native heritage DNA test was good strategy. Its damning in general that the only progressive is 78 year old Sanders to begin with, but yeah he was the most viable candidate for anyone not drinking the slow apocalypse koolaid

I'm not saying anything other than you have to take into consideration somebody's age and health as well as their policies. This will undoubtably impact on his campaign not only in the cancellations of events but in terms of the concern it will raise about whether he is physically able to actually take on what is one of the most demanding and stressful jobs in the world.

Is it fair on the guy to expect him to take it on just because the alternatives are not to our liking? I'm a Bernie fan by the way and would love to see him win but you gotta be realistic here.

The medical care for cardiac surgery is so good that he could be back in a month.
But seriously this is very bad news, I hope he recovers but it pretty much ends his bid for the presidency.
From what I've heard it's probably not a serious thing medically and those who previously weren't worried about his age/health but are now can't really justify that.

Those people will be many though. Too many for him to have any chance at winning a primary, I think.

So what now then? Wangs out for Yang time?
Good lord, no.

It's gonna have to be the ex republican with her plans to provide every American with DNA ancestry tests. Who is seventy years old...

Thats good to know. Hopefully its not longer than that.

Possibly although I can't see it hurting his poll number too much because Biden leaks brain juice on a daily basis and is still top of the polls and the people Bernie needs to win over to get the nomination won't care or even hear of this news. I'm guessing it will others a reason to double down on their candidate, the real worry I have is that it can be just minor surgery but the campaign has been suspended until further notice which isn't a great sign.

I personally know a few people who won't vote for him purely because they think he's too old. I don't get it though. Surely they're aware there is such a thing as a Vice President?
