That's very poor excuse. Harry Wilson was running into offside & beside Harry was off the mark of Lindelof's, Lindelof wasn't even staying tight to him as well so it doesn't take away with the fact that he was ball watching and not aware where his man was.

Football is about communication, if Lindelof decides to go on other man then he needs to let his team mate know that someone else will need to mark his man instead. At the end of the day Lindelof & AWB were really poor in handling the situation.
That's literally exactly what happened. Lindelof has no other choice but to track the runner and AWB picked King up. Everybody did as they were supposed to.

Maybe, maybe you could say Lindelof could have read the turn better instead of rushing out to cover a cutback, but otherwise it's entirely on AWB.

wat?

As if we don't conceed a goal a game presently
And yet there are only 4 teams in the entire league with a better goal difference, despite our own defense having to do significantly more defending than the likes of City and Liverpool. Go figure.

This exactly. When watching the game live I thought that Lindelof must have King because he went to cover Wilson. Watching the replay this morning I saw I was wrong. Lindelof doesn't get close to Wilson, he doesn't need to, Wilson runs straight offside and when the cross comes in he has turned around and is moving away from our goal trying to get back onside. Rather what happens is that Lindelof simply refuses to mark King.

Just watch the goal a couple of times and compare how our other CB (Maguire) marks their other CF (C. Wilson) with how Lindelof marks King. As soon as Wilson gets in the box Maguire sees him, close close and sticks with him as he moves. That's normal marking. Lindelof is the exact opposite, he never seems aware of where King is and makes no effort to get close to him or any Bournemouth player.

Wan-Bissaka's error is obvious and he clearly deserves blame for the goal. But at least he was trying to defend. Lindelof was trying to avoid defending and hoping that someone else would do it for him. It's exactly what Matic does when he plays.

No thats football. He was only offside when they neglected to play the ball to him. If Lindelof hadn't adjusted you'd be blaming him for not reacting in time to do the danger. Guaranteed.

AWB literally came and marked the man Lindelof left! There was no breakdown in communication because that's exactly what is supposed to happen. The man was passed on and every had picked someone up. There's absolutely zero wrong with that sequence, as ludicrously desperate as you are to blame Lindelof for this, the player had been passed on to AWB. That player then becomes his responsibility and he failed go deal with it. That's fine, no defender is infallible, and AWB has already built up more credit than most. Defense wasn't the problem yesterday and has been this season.

Shocking defender.

If you want to beat Manchester United just target Lindelof and you'll win.

40 million quid for a CB that can't head the ball and one that gets bullied pretty much every game. We need to get rid.

Lindelof's mistake was not putting his head where the danger was. He could have attempted to head the ball and get a foul on that. Yes AWB is at fault for the ultimate mistake as he should never have tried to nick the ball and let King goalside. But to me DeGea is also to be blamed. He never commands the box or shouts at his defenders. He could have shouted at them instructions just as Peter used to do.

Fault, not at fault, who cares... Can anyone look at his defending for the goal and think that was a rational thing for a center back to do? AWB could have caught the ball and chucked it into the net and I'd still wonder why the feck Lindelof is running away from the ball.

This isn't a witch hunt it or people picking on him. It's watching the things he actually does in the game and then thinking "what the feck is he doing that for?"
Obviously hindsight is everything and what he did was wrong and he looked half assed all game, however it's not that hard to realize what he is trying to do. 1 second before King lifts the ball Harry Wilson is running into the space behind King. That would have been the natural choice for King 99 out of 100 to make a lay off to a free Wilson. Lindelof tried to be smart and anticipate and block that. It's pretty clear on this image, right before the flick, how much space Wilson would have gotten, had King passed.

When you see that pic it looks like covering the pass was the right thing to do, as he has two team mates in very good position for a pass.

If you look at the goal again, you can also see how much movement Bournemouth create in the penalty box. It is really great work from them. Exactly what I miss in United’s attack.

Rubbish, he doesn't give goals away constantly. Also, what sort of football planet do some people actually live on. Are people really expecting Utd players to not make 10% mistakes in 90mins.
His mistakes cost us. So many times. Nobody blames him if he misplaced a pass but his mistakes lead to goals. Not good enough.

Yeah guys let's blame Lindelöf for AWB failing to defend, and let's also blame Lindelöf for us not scoring.

Looking at goals scored we're at 13th place in the table.

Looking at least goals conceded we're at 5th place. Only Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester City and Sheffield have conceded less than us. We only conceded 1 more goal than City and 2 more goals the Liverpool. But go on, let's blame Lindelöf for this too, because apparently that's not good enough.

Our problem is not in the defense. The problem is our non-existent goal scoring. That's why we don't win matches. We have scored 13 times. That's 21 goals less than City (!) and 12 less than Liverpool. But some cry babies keep coming here blaming Lindelöf for everything. He is not anywhere near our biggest problem right now.

I called it last season when he went on that decent run that I still wasn't convinced. I got slated if you look back.

Well well well.....

Well to be fair - Ole made a horrible decision assuming that clubs need 2 ball playing CB's when it is definitely not necessary so infact if he doesn't help the attack (which he doesn't) then he should be blamed for our attack.

Maguire on the other hand consistently comes out to midfield like Blind used to do and attempts to play passes that bypass the midfielders.

Lindelof makes one of those runs a match at maximum.

And perhaps that's because they're being coached into playing like that?

Im not sure why Maguire makes really good passes 4-6 every game and Lindelof is being coached to make one & even thats not true because Lindelof can't make a single goal scoring opportunity from deep midfield/defensive areas.

Smalling can play the role Lindelof better if you believe it is part of our managers tactics though it really isn't.

The guys is scared - safe defensively and safe when it comes to attacking. No risks and ultimately no rewards.

They have different roles. Maguire goes forward to take most aerials whole Lindelof cover for him. When it comes to passes, last game Lindelof had several passes through the line and two ended up in goal scoring chances.

Is thst because Lindelof is rubbish at aerials?

He is just not good enough and never will be. But its not his fault he is still there making mistakes left and right. I would understand Mourinho, because he hates when he is wrong in someone, so he gave him a lot of chances and Lindelof paid something back.

But why is Olé building our defence on him I will never know. He is just so weak - slow, weak in duels, horrible in air, bad positioning, average with ball. He hates defending so he hides or runs away from some defensive actions. Unaccaptable at this level and thats all on Olé. And why is Jones his last choice? He is better than Lindelof and Rojo.

What adjust? The guy is marking no one. If you are marking someone stay tight with your man like Maguire was. Both Harry & King were unmarked. Both AWB & Lindelof were ball watching where there were two players being unmarked in our penalty box. Shocking defending, it's basic.

This exactly. When watching the game live I thought that Lindelof must have King because he went to cover Wilson. Watching the replay this morning I saw I was wrong. First time I heard someone has the same opinion as me about Matic. Ball watching.

That's correct, Lindelof wasn't even trying to defend there, he was ball watching not aware where his man was. If he doesn't want to mark King then he should at least going to Harry. Maguire was exactly the opposite, stay tight with Wilson.

This is just more scapegoating. AWB has the man, Lindelof goes to cover the layoff, all AWB had to do was hold King there, the only option would have been the layoff, which Lindelof was going to cover, or to try and turn AWB, which AWB made easy by going for the ball.

I do agree Lindelof hasn't been great this season, but the fault isn't his for this goal.

I say it very regularly but he is a weak link.

Won't blame him for the goal or anything but he was shaky all game yet again IMO. Slow, Weak, Poor in the air, average passing.

Offers nothing. We should sell him while he has a value. Would be my last choice CB when everybody I fit.

Exactly. Lindelof moves to pick up the runner into the box and AWB picks up King. Lindelof is not tight to Wilson because he runs offside. As soon as he is back onside, Lindelof is on him again. It's just desperate trying to blame Lindelof for anything that takes place up to the moment King turns.

As he turns it's 50/50 whether Lindelof could have read it better, he gets a bit caught between blocking King and going with Wilson. Whatever he does, the goal is still happening as long as AWB gets turned like that.

You are talking about what happens after King receives the ball and Wan-Bissaka is marking him. I agree that from that point on the goal is Wan-Bissaka's fault, as you say he makes a mistake by trying to win the ball when he shouldn't which allows King to turn him.

What me and UNITED ACADEMY are criticising Lindelof for is his defending in the build-up. He should be marking King just like Maguire is marking C. Wilson. Instead he just wanders around aimlessly, not getting close to any Bournemouth player. Just watch the goal twice, once focusing on Maguire's marking and once focusing on Lindelof's and you'll see one CB who knows how to defend and one who looks clueless.

Lindelof has been playing bad the whole season and has not been the best cb this season.

When he first joined Tuanzebe was the better player and now Tuanzebe is still the better player even after Lindelof receiving the minutes that’s should have been given to Tuanzebe.

He's poor and out of shape at the moment, but the goal was clearly AWB's fault.

Guy let his forward beat him in the box and as a defender it's unforgivable.

Yes, Lindelof wasn't there to help, but neither Maguire.

The defense were all over the place during this chance but AWB wasn't good enough on this occasion.

This is a ridiculous opinion and seems to crop up all the time now as a stick to beat Lindelof with.

Tuanzebe may well be a talent but he has played a grand total of 1 league game at CB in his entire career. A game in which we lost, to a team on the edge of the relegation zone. His other game of note this season was when he passed the ball directly from LB to an unmarked opponent on the edge of our own box for an equaliser.

He is nothing but a prospect at this point.

Hopefully he will turn good, but so far we’ve only seen him play twice and Lindelof would have been slaughtered for those two performances.

The agenda against Lindelof is way over the top. To blame a CB for the losses because of a completely misfiring attack.

Against Bournemouth, Lindelof played more passes into the strikers, getting the ball forward.

I don't think he was any worse than Maguire who looked very dodgie.

I don't think there is any agenda. I don't see why there would be. Everyone was behind him, even those with doubts, to at least give him a chance to step up this season since he improved last season. Guess what it hasn't happened, and countless of good arguments have been used to describe what people don't like about his play. That probably wouldn't happen if it was an agenda, it would just be baseless shit thrown at him which isn't happening at the moment. People are just critiquing his play for the most part, as do I.

I cannot argue against some of the arguments put against Lindelof. However; when the attack is toothless, and every goal conceded is looked at in fine detail, you will find cracks.

I saw someone posted about Lindelof defending in the Bournemouth goal? blaming him? there is other 10 players on the pitch and AWB was the one marking him in the box. How he can be blamed for that is strange IMO.

I don't believe Lindelof is as bad as some of us make him out to be. He has his flaws and probably will lose his spot to Tuanzebe but it seems every goal we concede is somehow blamed on him.

I don't care as much about our 21-year old right back coming in to cover centrally, and making a mistake. After all he did what he is expected to do as it his style, and it works very often in his position, and in the box. He has bailed us out clearing the ball in a crowded box like that, and yeah its a mistake, a bad one even, but I get it and can defend it even.

What absolutely despise and can not defend in the situation is Lindelof. What you seem to miss is that its not just what he did on the clip in isolation, it is the pattern we're seeing in his style of defending and it is non existent. He makes clear mistakes sometimes, like loosing a duel it is not good, but I can defend it, what you just can't defend is when he doesn't even try. That pattern of backing off, pretending to be doing something while you're really not doing anything is NOT what defending is about. It's horrible to see, and honestly it pisses me off. What he did in that clip would be an excusable brain-fart in isolation, at most, but there is a clear pattern on why he ended up doing what he did. He does it a lot, he avoids confrontation.
