Last night I thought yes Sterling should have done something. This morning I can understand why he didn’t get involved. Evening kick off on a Saturday with plenty hours of boozing it up pre match making this game a powder keg of a game with the antics going on in the stand if the players were to go off due to this incident it could of well and truly blew up big time.

I don’t agree with what happened and I hope all involved especially the racist clown gets the book thrown at him.

Does this now mean the Manchester Derby will be played as the early game to avoid trouble now?

It seems like every time we get a result at their ground, one of our players gets his with an object in that corner of the ground. We could be in league 2 with David Nugent wearing the number 7 and they'd still have a major complex about us. You cant buy class.

No need to punish City. We punished them already.
That guy has also got what he deserved if stories are true about his company .
As for the ones throwing lighters, I hope City have CCTV footage and can ban them.

It looks really dystopian in fairness!

I don’t know if English fans have their freedom restricted as you frame it. That ‘ultra‘ culture has just never existed here. English hooligans were just scumbags that wanted a drink and a fight. I guess it is more sanitised since they've been removed from prominence on the terraces because it’s become a much more family orientated event with a lot more women attending too. You don’t get that kind of dark but exciting atmosphere in the EPL.
Well from a German perspective no beer and no standing in stadiums sounds like a restriction of freedom. And a lot of the people who drive the atmosphere in German stadiums are young folks who pay €150-200 for their season ticket and might not be able to afford following their team around for every match if they had to pay English prices

The drama is basically restricted to the ultra blocks, if you stand close to them you know what you sign up for. The further you get away from them the calmer things become and thus there are plenty of women and children at stadiums as well, just not necessarily in at the hot spots (though afaik ultras don't discrimminate based on gender). If you watch the Hertha video again you can see people just a couple of meters up the away block standing there peacefully drinking their beer, watching the game.

What I don't understand is, half their team is black! Christ one of the best ever players was black ffs!
This argument is irrelevant, they’re racist cnuts - I’m sure they’d be racist about their own players if they’re not performing.

‘Unfortunately, we are still in a backward society. [It is a shame] we still have to live with that in 2019. On the field, I didn’t see anything. I saw it only in the locker room afterwards,’ Fred told ESPN Brazil. ‘The guys showed me. He even threw a lighter and it hit me. I try not to care about that. I try to look ahead.’

‘Unfortunately, this is happening in some stadiums. It happened here, it happened in Ukraine with some friends. It’s sad, but we have to keep our heads up and forget about that. We can’t give them any attention because that’s all they want. I spoke to the referee after the match, they will do something about it and that’s all.’

‘We are all the same regardless of skin color, hair and gender. We came from the same place and we all go to the same place when it’s all said and done. Thank God I have a lot of friends here in the locker room who hugged me, like Lingard. I don’t want to think about it. I just want to move on.’

There was quite a few missiles that rained down on Fred, before one hit him at the back of the head. So I'm assuming it was more than 1 fan. Is this right.

Edited it after reading . I didnt mean to say just as bad but can't we just call out the individual rather than bringing in his race, country or gender into it.
Not in 2019, no. Individual responsability is out of fashion. Some cnut does something, every group people find convenient to fit him in gets the blame.

Yeah, as you correctly point out this is not City's (or football's) problem to solve alone. Racism is a societal issue and while things are getting better in general, racist attitudes have been getting more visible, and -- I'd like to say "popular" but I think saying "safe to display in public" would be more accurate -- recently, largely thanks to the rise of right wing politicians everywhere in the world. This doesn't mean the fight is hopeless, or shouldn't be fought. Ban people when they do racist things, give clubs meaningful penalties when large scale racism occurs (instead of fines, deduct points. Supporters in the stands don't give a feck if some anonymous millionaire is out £50 000 but will start to give a feck if their club loses points due to racists, which leads to my next point), and also do community policing. When you see racism, if you can, call it out, even if it's a United supporter. Nobody has to fight people in the streets, but for instance we've had plenty of questionable views and opinions expressed here, and it's important to call these out when they pop up. Let them know their views are not welcome.

Beyond that, outreach and education. I am very proud of United for taking a public stand to support charities and organizations like Stonewall, and for the "All Red, All Equal" campaign. It might not make existing bigots change their views, but maybe it will reach the next generation and teach them from a young age that everyone is equally important and valued. Maybe when someone sees a player they support and like come out and share stories of abuse they've suffered or to condemn racism, they will rethink their attitudes. Maybe not, but hopefully some will, and that's a step in the right direction.

Ultimately, give people the opportunity to change and to make amendments. When I was younger, I was a very angry young man (I was really angry and disappointed about my life, but since admitting that is very hard, I was focusing on easier targets) and got convinced by some very presentable and fancy-talking racists. Luckily I never abused anyone, but I did hold a lot of views I now find abhorrent and for me it took exposure to people who were a lot smarter than I was before I started questioning my views and opinions, and took a long and hard look at myself. Change can happen, even if it doesn't happen overnight, but if we slam the door on people, they will just drift further into more extreme groups and views.
Excellent post mate.

His use of English is about at the level I’d expect.
Earlier in the thread someone posted a Twitter link which had a picture of this guy's Facebook. One of his most recent pictures had the caption "squaddies against Corbyn". After seeing that it all made sense.

United have a lot of squaddies that the Caf would rather see in politics or a battlefield than on a football pitch.

Sounds dystopian.
Law and order is hardly dystopia. Surely these cops are not there to harm the average Joe (Hans?), but in the case some lunatic tries something stupid.
You could be right if they were used left and right to deal with mundane situations, but the poster clarified they are rarely needed.

Don’t blame the stewards at all. They’re very low paid workers and it’s not on them to give justice to society. Why should they potentially take a kicking? Just report it to the police and let them deal with it.

its not up to the players either.

city did the right thing and admitted fault ASAP and dealt with the situation. That’s all we can do.

unfortunately every club has these idiots, racism is still hidden all over the world. when situations like this happen though we must not hide it. Name and shame and they’ll soon change their tunes.

Years ago he shared anti-Muslim stuff from the English Democrats, and moaned about asians being 'aloud' to pray in school (guessing he's either not heard of Catholic schools, or it is okay for them as they're the right ethnicity).

It's not up to them to give justice to society but is it up to them to steward the games, seeing as though they chose to be stewards.

If they don't want to deal with it (eg "Oi, pack that shit in or you're out") then they could at least get someone who will, be it another steward or a police officer, rather than just ignore it.

This bit in particular is really sad to read. Where the feck is society going? :(

Don’t know if you are kidding?

I’m f****** delighted that this prick’s Xmas & personal life is now completely ruined. Also deservedly been named & shamed. He has no one else to blame other than himself.

There is no place in society for a******* like that!

The difficulty with these situations is that the problem is systemic and due to ignorance. Simply making people stop because they’re scared of punishment does not solve the greater problem at hand.

Still waiting for City to identify the coin throwers that cut Rio’s eye back in the day. Beckham pocketed the 50pmthey threw at him so some City fan would have gone hungry for a week. People defending Sterling ffs. There were also two stewards a few feet away that did nothing. Raheem is the figurehead of the England team and threatened to walk off if he heard racist abuse or don’t City fans count?

If those posts are real from the alleged abuser, then they should send him back to junior school with that spelling. He will get a fine and a ban and next week it will happen again. Next season Leeds may be in the PL and then it will test the authorities. Looking at the empty seats at the emptyhad on a derby day, City need every fan they can get.

A load of pissed up yobs that out number them massively? At the end of the day they’re barely trained, they have no authority.

as I said, take note and report them. Get back up if necessary. Just going at them 1 on 1 and asking them to calm down isn’t going to work.

Don't know about the UK laws, but at least in Finland if you, say, beat a steward you get a more severe punishment than if you beat up an average Joe or Jane. Also the stewards doesn't have to go 1 on 1, they can and should call back-up.

He's pretty unrepentant about it.

Turn the volume up on this and you can hear it slightly:

Where was he putting his hands cause he didn't put them in his pockets?

Why was his mouth rounded as though he was making an ooh sound?
