I'm struggling to see a null and void league the more I think about it.

From next season's perspective it's likely to be just as bad or probably worse during the winter months. Is next season going to go through major postponement? I dont see it.

When you consider the UK government seems to want to encourage herd immunity, I think summer months will be the time when public gatherings are most likely.

Not only will the authorities feel pressure to settle liverpool as champions I also think they're eager to sort out CL places and relegation. IF they could, they would.

I'd put money on the euros being cancelled and the PL finishing in the summer.

So now that the football is cancelled, how long do you think it will be until we start seeing those weird threads that usually pop up during the summer?

Did you not see the thread about premier league fighting XI or something? Didn't even take a day.

I agree with a lot of that. I said in one of my posts that there is no evidence that the virus will just go away and not return therefore do we just cancel next season too and have another incomplete season? For the integrity of the sport the domestic leagues should be completed whenever that may be even if it means behind closed doors. Like I said it's much easier to abandon a season that hasn't already than one that has been 75% completed. Talk of liverpool being given the league is also nonsense too and any fan suggesting this, need to have a word with themselves.

Exactly. The idea that the season should be null and void and just restart is just utter nonsense and without logic. Do people think the virus will just go away in 5 months time and that's it? Who's to say that next season isn't suspended because of another outbreak? Do we just cancel next season too? Voiding the season will just be a dangerous precedence set. The most sensible thing to do is complete the season when it's suitable to do so. It's much easier to abandon a season that hasn't already started 2020/2021 than the current. I guess there will be more clarity at the end of next week.

there is no pressure to crown Liverpool as champions for feck sake. It literally doesn’t matter in the scheme of things. Void the season and don’t even think about restarting until the WHO declare that it isn’t a pandemic anymore*

*Is that how it works? If it’s seen as less dangerous does it stop being a pandemic or will it always be one now?

I suspect the league will be null and void. There'll be a meeting Thursday apparently and it only needs 14 of the 20 clubs to agree to void it.

You have to be realistic and admit that this league will not be restarting on April 3rd, not a chance IMO. All training facilities will be shut, squads will be self isolating, players arguably won't be at the required fitness levels to play - this is going to get far worse before it gets better. It hasn't hit the peak yet, we're a good few months from that. (believe the government predicted June for this) So let's say games restart after June, players and managers whose contracts expire on the 30th... what happens there, especially if they dont wish to renew? Then it affects the Euros potentially and the winter break.

I would be surprised if they do not void the season

There's no way the Euro's will happen over the summer.

Agreed. I think the season will be scrapped and football restarts in August, provided this virus is no longer a global pandemic and is starting to be contained and beaten.

Just watched Sunday supplement. They mentioned that if the season is void, the PL clubs may have to pay the money back.
Can't see 14 clubs agreeing to that. The only thing that is certain is, nobody knows feck all!

What? That can't be true. Sounds like bullshit from the gossip newspapers.

Based on current projections, the earliest football can resume is June, and that doesn’t look too likely either. Then what, do we carry on after three months with no ‘pre season’ after a period where some will have had limited training? That won’t end well for the physios.

And in the best case scenario where that all finishes in August, then what? Straight onto the next season? Another break after nine or so games when clubs are struggling financially?

It’s completely impractical. We’ll suffer by missing out on the Champions League but these are unprecedented times. If Liverpool actually want to be made honorary champions while everyone else suffers because they ‘mean more’, so be it, give them the trophy, and let’s hope to get back to normality with next season unaffected.

Very good points. After such a break you can't just start up with no pre season then expect the players to roll straight into another. It's simply not going to happen.

Gut feel it ends up null and void
Presumably the same clubs who qualified last season end up with the champions League / uefa places for 2020 as the cl and uefa will Also be void

The question would be man city... Would their ban stand and if so would arsenal be given the cl spot?

Again just a gut feel but the city appeal won't get to court in time given what's going on and they will let city play in next season's

Leicester will be furious but can't really see another logical way.

I reckon uefa will apply their ranking system to see who goes where. They might as well flipping apply it in these instances or what's the point of a rank in the first place.

Finish the last nine games in August if need be, then play the next season without CL and EL, following season make the CL bigger (group stage of 64 teams and 16 groups, as the ro16 is staged in four weeks they can put the ro32 and 16 in those slots like EL do) with all teams that qualify this season and next invited to that tournament.

Yes it will be complicated as the new signings will be in for the end of this season but out of all options this one is by far the least complicated, there's no perfect answer really.

I want the league to be cancelled purely from an entertainment perspective - imagine the number of petitions, shirts and conspiracy theories about how Sir Alex and mad scientist Arsene Wenger invented the coronavirus in cahoots with the FA to stop Liverpool winning the league.

It's not as easy as that though.

While it's one of many ideas, in order to continue this season sometime next year they would have to freeze the summer transfer window and impose a mandatory extension on all players contracts that are running out this summer otherwise the player registrations would be completely fecked up.

Say we managed to sign Sancho or Grealish this summer, our team next year when this restarts would be really quite different.

Which is illegal, you cannot force someone to extend their contract.

Oh just give Liverpool the trophy and have a weekend long special on Sky. and BT about how wonderful they are.

Then maybe the football authorities can actually figure out scheduling and what to do with the problem of every other club without having to listen to people bitch and moan about how unfair it all is on Liverpool

I put this in the newbies but thought I would add it here:

Reading this extract from Rooney on COVID-19:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51896488

A few comments stand out:

"After the emergency meeting, at last the right decision was made - until then it almost felt like footballers in England were being treated like guinea pigs.

"I know how I feel. If any of my family get infected through me because I've had to play when it's not safe, and they get seriously ill, I'd have to think hard about ever playing again. I would never forgive the authorities."

I can't read the full Times article referenced but based in the BBC article, whilst I do sympathise with footballers, I think he is off the mark. Footballers are at no more risk than my children are at school. In reality it is the fans who were exposed unnecessarily, herded in large closely packed groups for 2 hours and of mixed ages and various levels of health. I get his frustration and fear but I think he should be recognising the fans have been put at a significantly higher level of risk than any footballer.

Oh, bloody hell. Are you fecking with us? If you are then ok, i can accept it. But if not then logic is not your biggest strength.
Again ( and again and again); it doesn't matter how small chances are for City catching you. The fact is that they can catch you. So you are not mathematically champions. And in sport you can't get title (or win or anything) based on odds or assuption. How is that hard to understand ffs?

On top of that league has 38 games. 38 games must be played to league becomes legit. Even if you have lead of 40 points after 37 games, you are still not a champions. Because it is not and i repeat, league is not only about you. Do you understand that only few points seperate clubs of missing CL or not, being relegated or not. They will for sure say that they want to play all 38 games (which is by the bloody rules).
Logic is not my biggest strength? Says the guy who contradicts his own argument by saying Liverpool aren't mathematically champions, but the also says even if you have a lead of 40 points after 37 games yo are still not champions? Where's the logic there!

I know the league is not only about 1 team which is why I have said that my preference is for the league to be resumed as soon as it is safe to do so, however long it takes.

Meanwhile the lower leagues apparently note record attendance so that's just stellar. Nevermind Cheltenham going ahead for some reason. The UK should really start with some measures because this is not going to go well and football won't be able to restart for quite a while.

If City is banned from the CL next season and this season is void, won't it go off last seasons finishes for next season European participants?

Therefore Arsenal would be in the CL...

You’re not wrong but Rooney has a wife and kids, they should rightfully be his first and only priority.
If he said he’s worried about everybody then fair play to him, but ultimately aren’t we all most worried about keeping our own families healthy during all this? I know I am.

The way this virus is progressing, it is pure fantasy to think that April 6 is an appropriate date to begin playing again. I would expect July or August at the earliest, and that assumes we follow a similar trajectory to containment as China, and experts say there are too many variables to map out an accurate trajectory of the virus: https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coron...d-19-outbreak-peak-experts-weigh-in-1.4845523

I think that the season will be cancelled and the Euros pushed out a year. I'm surprised the Premier League was in denial for so long.
I'd say even July or August is optimistic to be honest.

Cancelling/voiding the season would cause huge problems though, for all sorts of reasons. You have to resume the season irregardless of how long it takes.

If you were filming a box set of a programme and you had to shut down for months due to the virus, you wouldn't just not complete the season you were making and skip to the next one!

I said this already, but if this ‘14-club majority’ claim is true, it’s nothing a few £20m brown envelopes to ‘floater clubs’ can’t fixed from a Liverpool perspective. Let’s see how desperate they are to continue this season to its bitter end.
do you seriously think that Liverpool would hand out £80m or so in bribes?

Cause it benefits them to get their money back. Everyone is just putting forth speculation that affects them.

Surely they won’t vote to void the league at this stage. It’s way too early to make a decision like that.

If everything is still shut down in June a vote would be appropriate then because the following season will be in jeopardy at that point.

Money talks in football and I would think a full uninterrupted season starting on schedule in August is worth more to all the clubs than finishing the last quarter of the previous season, which would cause huge scheduling, logistical and contractual problems.
