55 deaths after today. Our death rate is at 3.5%.

But we have also given up testing for mild and moderate cases, so expect our death rate to hit crazy numbers.

I would have thought 200 hundred nappies was hoarding, but just been informed by the wife that we’ll need at least 12 a day early on... that’s barely two weeks’ worth! Oh, tomorrow morning will be fun.
Better to do it now though because once the baby is born there will be feck all time to do anything else but look after them. That includes the room, bed etc.

They also look like melted wellies or Winston Churchill after ten pints for the first few weeks.

Despite headlines of WHO SLAMS UK FOR STOPPING TESTING we seem to be posting numbers that only Asian countries, Italy and a couple of others are outstripping:

https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus#current-covid-19-test-coverage-estimates

Judging by what Whitty said earlier, it still sounds like we are testing every possible positive case, but we aren’t wasting our time testing people who may have had it. We are just not testing those will now test negative, because the test won’t confirm if you did previously have COVID-19. Maybe they need to just work on their communication, as they appear to be doing themselves a disservice.

I’m sure that death number was released earlier and was only 1? Now it’s 20.

We were doing well with testing but it's all changed now with only those at highest risk being tested, hence why WHO decided to have a go.

That said, I don't think WHO specifically had a go at us. They just said 'test, test, test'

For those panicking about nappies or other hard to find items. It might be a long shot, but you could attempt to phone some supermarkets nearby and plea to them to hold at least 1 item in reserve for you? Not sure if it'd work but you could at least try it right?
Alternatively there's a lot of Facebook groups with people offering nappies and formula their kid has grown out of even in normal times. We've donated to people a good few times.

It was 1. Looks like different departments update with different figures. Noticed that in the USA, with so many different testing companies, the figure goes up continously throughout the day. Whereas most other countries seem to update once a day.

The french scientific panel advised an italian type of lockdown. We will know what the governement has decided in a dozen of minutes.

Wish the media would stop it with the celebrity angle. It really isn't the time for this nonsense.
Apart from the fact that Tom Hanks has probably had his one and only bite of Vegemite/Marmite whilst isolating. He plastered that on!

Are you in the south? Some of my family are in Nice, and they said the Italian border has closed. Seems a bit late to me.

Bon chance!

'we're going to trust the public to listen to advice and act responsibly'

That's an astonishing abdication of duty.

Both a failure of leadership and also an insight into their mentality. feck everyone. If we don't tell them to do anything then it won't cost us a thing and it's all their fault.

My workplace (a very small business) is telling us that the business will be staying open regardless, and while not directly saying staff have to come in, they are doing it in a way that almost guilt's you into coming even if you know it's the wrong decision overall.

They are also throwing around the usual lines such we won't be affected at our age, unless we have any existing conditions.

It’s not that, they know exactly what they are doing by saying that. Insurance companies won’t have to pay out to businesses if the government doesn’t enforce closures.

What a load of bollocks that is. Hopefully they change that stance.

Bit of false hope. Then you realise the deaths are skyrocketing. That’s the true indicator, our attitude to testing is so woolly there’s no point looking at the infected number

So in France, 15 days stringent lockdown, no public gatherings at all and only essential shopping are allowed.

Edit: Also all reforms are stopped, the focus is on the pandemic.(I don't know what that actually means but thought that it was an interesting remark)

Edit 2: The EU is closing Schengen borders tomorrow.

Edit 3: Water, gas, electricity and rent bills are suspended. He also talked about 300bn to support companies but I don't remember what it is about exactly.

One of the tables I had booked are here now. I've known them since they were teen-agers and now they are in their 20s. The subject of discussion is the government being stupid with these measures whilst we are trying to come out of recession, they think we should allow the spread and get it over with. None of these people understand the effects on ICUs, perhaps the government to publicise the effects on ICUs if infection rates go up.

Frustratingly, the GOV.UK and NHS pages are not updated with the new guidance a good hour and a bit after the presser. You'd think they get the small things right. People are going to go to check and wonder what the fuss is about. Still can't push staff towards that whilst there is a chance they might just check their e-mails before switch off for the evening.

The Dutch strategy that was announced an hour ago:

- No total lockdown
- Building a "controlled herd immunity"
- Trying to reduce peak demand on healthcare, in other words "flatten the curve"
- Isolate those in higher risk groups: elders and people with other health issues

We know that's not true given we're not supposed to let them know if we have mild to moderate symptoms. On the other hand clearly the ~10000 tests done in the last few days since the announced change in strategy haven't all been on people hospitalised with symptoms. It would be nice to have a more detailed breakdown of who is being tested and why but the important thing is that they they themselves have that info. Anecdotally I know they are testing some healthcare staff with mild symptoms. Evidently the odd famous person too.

Yeah, I could have phrased that better.

That was the end of my post but you put it more succinctly. Capitalism is fun.

I think it's more the point that under their party over the last 10 years, the underfunding of police and NHS has forced them into this 'ask' phase. He doesn't have the police on the ground to enforce anything practically.
