The key point here is that footballers aren't being treated like other workers. They're being rushed back to work earlier than those in similar roles (i.e. roles that are totally nonessential and totally incompatable with social distancing) for financial and political reasons. No amount of increased testing (which itself is problematic and only ever so effective) changes that fact.

And pointing to the amount of money they earn as if that means they should be more willing to risk their health is an utterly braindead response. They're paid to be footballers, that's it. They're not paid to take increased risks in the middle of a pandemic.
I agree with you, and think that it be stopped. But it's not, why? Because all the clubs, including us, are in favour of a return. The players for the most part are keeping their head down and doing as they're told.

When we talk about the PL/FA giving zero fecks about threat to players families - the same could be said for us

Conveniently ignored my post that the risk is minimized through extensive testing, I see.

Would you be more comfortable playing a game of football with 21 others who've been tested regularly over the past few days or would you rather work in an overcrowded Primark where social distancing isn't respected either?
If you have vulnerable family you wouldn’t be happy working in either conditions, obviously. Primark isn’t even open anyway.

Footballers arent immune to making this choice. They cant sit out until theres a vaccine so they can either go to work or step aside.
Im not having a go at them or being harsh, its a choice all workers with vunerable relatives must make.

Yep.

If I was a footballer I would be very aware of the fact that a large section of the populace don't really care that much about my wellbeing. In fact a small but significant portion of the populace, media and politicians actively have a degree of contempt for footballers. Which means that if they or their family become sick then they can expect a bit of useless sympathy, some people scoffing that they're paid well enough to take the risk and a collective shrug of the shoulders.

Footballers will need to stand up for themselves if they're unhappy with what's happening as nobody else will do it for them.

Your standard response when someone calls you out on a bad post, sigh.

Tbh you have chosen little bits of her post to make yourself look better . The poster made some very good points but you choose to ignore that and instead decided to be a dick and try and pick a fight

There's no point in having a discussion with him. Anytime you bring forward a valid argument his standard response is "Please remember that you are a GUEST on OUR forum so I don't need to EXPLAIN myself to YOU, I hope YOU get BANNED once Liverpool wins the league".

This is why the Juve fans told them to feck off when they did the Heysel Tribute at Anfield. They have always been a hypocritical bunch.

Jesus mate don't mention Heysel we are all meant to forget about that and pretend it didn't happen . Always the victims . Horrible fecking bunch they are

Why don't you just stop talking around things and admit that you couldn't care less about player's safety or how many people die, you simply want Liverpool to win the league whatever the cost? It's not that difficult.

For the record, I understand Deeney's view. I also wouldn't want to be playing sports as a professional athlete if I didn't know the long-term consequences this virus has on my body.
Oh well.

Totally agree with this. If my employer decides I have to come back to work because they deem it safe then I either go in, or face the consequences. Clearly pressure will be applied to me to go in and do my job, or lose it. Footballers are not unique and in fact, if the club says "fine, we won't pay you until you do" the average PL player will be in a better position than most who have to work to keep paying the bills.

Parish from Palace has been vocal on this. Football is unsustainable without a product to sell. Broadcasters will want money back if the season doesn't finish and won't pay anything next season if it doesn't go ahead. Most clubs in the Country would be insolvent in 6 months, if not before.

Aurier seems like an absolute prick. He just doesn't care at all about the rules and I hope Spurs fine him heavily.

If the reports are true, then he's either got a very low intellect, genuinely doesn't realise what's going on as he lives in such a privileged bubble, or is incredibly arrogant.

Very possibly one of the many who believe that their own little rule breaks are harmless.

He's just celebrating his negative test results by treating himself to a haircut. After all what better way to do that than by exposing yourself to infection. No doubt he planned on carrying said infection to training today to share with his teammates. Bubbly guy

Walker's another one. He's not paid attention to lockdown at all.
thanks to some of these knobs we might not even have a next season. Matter of time before someone brings an infected barber to the hotel or sees an escort before gameday and takes it to the pitch

Tbh if they did that, next season would be one of my last thoughts.

Because it's only entertainment to you. The number of clubs that will go bankrupt and the jobs that will be lost are a bigger issue than the entertainment. And in a way Football is also one of our country's bigger exports. We lose big without international tv deals and sponsorships

Unless you have money at stake then it's also only entertainment for you.

I don't think players will care if international TV deals are at risk, nor should they. They might just want to play their football which is their right. But I doubt international TV deals and clubs they have no affiliation to going bust will be at the forefront on their mind, if other players have been irresponsible and put them at risk.

Some guy on Twitter said he should just suck it up and go to work like the supermarket workers have. I replied saying it’s an essential service unlike football. Footballs just entertainment. And Deeney is fortunate enough to be the position to be able to not turn up to work and fair play to him for making the best decision for his son.

To which a Liverpool fan comes along and replies that I was a typical United fan, Liverpool are getting the title and I should get over it, even though I made no mention of liverpool or the title in my post. They’re a tetchy bunch and the last few months would have been hilarious if it weren’t for the 300+k dead worldwide

Missed the point completely. Giving it another try. No football at all next season= bankruptcy, rise in unemployment, fall in tax revenue etc = we all lose.

He is a monumentally stupid individual, both on and off the pitch and, if I do still care about football in the same way once this is all done, I can't wait to see the back of him.

Whilst I don't deny clubs will struggle and some will go under, you're talking in extremes and absolute extremes at that.

Best we just leave it at that.

Generally any major industry getting maimed for a year will leave a mark on any country. Not even specific to football.

Sure we can leave it at that. Don't have to agree

The problem is not the player.. it is the families. Most of these players will get mild symtoms as they are fit and healthy. But are their families being tested twice a week?
Again mate, this applies to everybody doesn't it? We all have families who are at risk and I am not saying footballers don't have a right to be worried about their families. My point is all these players have enough resources to make separate arrangements for at risk family members.

I agree with most of what you're saying but the crux of the matter is:
do the players have to be separated from their loved ones?

If it were my decision, I would happily wait until as long as it took before football could be resumed to play out the remaining fixtures. This isn't an option though and it seems that there is a deadline in place to finish the season by the end of July. Again, my preference would be if its not safe enough, they just finish the season, either on a points per game system or based on the current table, or whatever is deemed the most fairest way to do it. Obviously if they can make it as safe as possible then playing out the fixtures would be the fairest way to do it.

As I've mentioned before Liverpool winning the league is a formality. Its the only position in the table that is 100% not going to change. The relegation issue and the 2-4 places are the main places that need to be resolved.

Aren't they separated for events such as World Cups or Euros? That's a point Neville made, which I agree with completely, that they could've held the final matches over 4-6 weeks like a tournament where everyone has to stay together. That's usually what happens in major tournaments.

Players in Germany have been doing the same, a player from Monchengladbach has a partner who is pregnant and she is now in Belgium with her family till he finishes his matches. That's something Deeney can easily do for some time in order to finish the season.

In all fairness though he's just another individual who's been crippled by fear. Constant depressing news about the number of deaths increasing day after day after day. There's plenty of others just like him. It's gotten to the stage now I reckon where the biggest danger lies more in long-term mental health issues for thousands & thousands of people who've all who've been mentally scarred by the events of the past few months. Footballers are not like your everyday Joe Bloggs who work in a factory or building site. They live an isolated life anyway & so this stuff probably feeds on their insecurities more than it would for the rest of us.
Crippled by fear or genuinely worried about his young child that has breathing difficulties?

Spot on analysis - Liverpool as a city and it’s fan base are well known for their love of all things Tory. Bill Shankly was a massive Tory and now Klopp carries on that tradition - he always votes for right wing parties. Prefers a tax cut to good public services.

All 5 mps in Liverpool are Tory. The city’s shift rightwards gathered momentum in the 80s when Liverpool embraced Thatcherism. Geoffrey Howe even wrote a letter to Thatcher saying how Liverpool was a bastion of Toryism and they must pour more money into it.

And as for right wing newspapers well the city even has a campaign encouraging people to buy a particular one.

Let me know when you’re mixing up politics and football again. Big fan of your take on the city and it’s political leanings.
You mean it's not true? I'm shocked I tell you, shocked.
