Was a tough decision between Pokemon Shield and Luigi's Mansion for my next game but decided on the latter :D

Should keep me going until lockdown eases a bit more and my birthday gets here :)

My mate got Pokemon Shield and absolutely hated it. I'm not really into Pokemon so doesn't interest me.

I just got Hollow Knight and think it's brilliant, especially at £10!

I just received a £40 Amazon voucher for winning something at work... can't decide what game to get. I currently have Mario Kart and Smash Bros Ultimate. My mate's telling me to get Mario Maker 2 but I don't really know if that's any good.

I think Sword & Shield are very good, but in terms main series Pokémon games (the usual two version-games where you collect Badges and become the Champion etc) they're probably somewhere in the middle. Eg. Not better than the originals if you're nostalgic for these games, but far superior to Sun & Moon on the 3DS and some others for example. The difference here is that rather than release the Yellow to Red/Blue, or the Crystal to Gold/Silver, they've done a DLC package. So, in my eyes, until around November when part 2 is released, you're not getting the full experience yet.

People who are still considering Sword/Shield should probably wait until near Christmas and buy the game + DLC together. It's possible there will be some kind of deal by that point or perhaps even a complete edition at a reduced cost.

Mario Maker is very good if you like the original side-scrolling Mario games. You can have a bit of fun making your own levels or just playing the thousands and thousands created by other people. It is such a value for money game, probably as much as any game ever made. However, despite all the content and accessibility, I always feel it gets a bit old too fast and I can't quite put my finger on it, because it is hard to fault.

What kind of games do you usually play?

I normally used to play figuring games but I heard the online scene on the street fighter games on switch is dead so I've ignored them.

I'm more of a short burst player/online player as opposed to intricate adventure games. I'd much rather play Mario Kart over Zelda for example.

I do like the look of the following games;

Splatoon 2
Luigi's Mansion 3
Mario Maker 2
Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze

Splatoon 2 is great for what you're after, it still has good online scope but word is there are a lot of cheaters online and Nintendo seems unable to patch it properly. It's basically a case of wait for Splatoon 3 if you want to avoid that stuff completely.

Luigi's Mansion 3 is brilliant and now has an online mode you can purchase as a DLC I believe, but I haven't played that yet. If you're going to spend £40~ on a game, I'd suggest Luigi or Mario Maker out of those four.

If you fancy Donkey Kong instead, I would definitely look to get it either as a sale online or buy it secondhand on eBay if possible. It was on the Wii U with very little difference but it seems to remain at a higher price all the time. It really should be £20-30 now but physical Nintendo games rarely get permanent price drops for brand new. Of course, these are all great games and worth the money, but considering how old a couple of them are in particular, you should be looking to try and find them closer to half RRP and you'll usually have to go pre-owned to do that.

10 months without a direct now, but rumors saying there's a direct this month, fingers crossed.
Forever waiting!

I heard that Nintendo is planning to do a Direct in August or September still if possible, which would be more like a combination of a lot of the stuff they'd have shown at e3 if it happened in June and their usual September show. They'll do some drip feed announcements in the meantime though like with Paper Mario over Twitter. I'll be surprised if there isn't at least one game announced on its own as a potential August release announced next week, something smaller like a Pikmin 3 port, but at least enough to get people talking until they can announce something else.

I think Nintendo wanted to do a big blowout for this supposed Mario collaboration release, but I can see this just being dropped on Twitter or maybe a short 10 minute Direct like the last couple of Pokémon ones. I always thought this would be their September/October game and they'd have a new game for Holiday 2020 like Breath of the Wild 2, but that is seeming unlikely now. I don't think that will come until Holiday 2021 if it doesn't come out this calendar year.

Nintendo usually has the bulk of their releases from September to December as I recall Reggie stating something crazy, along the lines that 80% of Nintendo's overall revenue is earned yearly during those four months. But at the moment, all I can think of for the rest of this year is:

Paper Mario: The Origami King - July 17th
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered - August 27th
Pokémon The Crown Tundra DLC - No Date (Probably November)
Bravely Default 2 - No Date, 2020 Confirmed
Pikmin 3 Port - Speculation, no announcement
Mario 3D World Port - Speculation, no announcement
Mario HD Collection (64, Sunshine, Galaxy) - Speculation, no announcement

Some games a bit more out there from rumours throughout the year:

Bayonetta 3 - This is taking an age, I think it's a 2021 game, possibly February but I think maybe October
Breath of the Wild 2 - I always felt it would be the killer game late Nov/early Dec 2020. If it isn't out this year, it will definitely be late 2021.
Monster Hunter - Categorically not a port of World, but closer to traditional Monster Hunter. I think Capcom announces this for a 2021 release soon.
Metroid Prime Trilogy HD - This is no doubt finished, Nintendo just wants to release it at the right time.
2D Metroid Game - This is heavily rumoured to come instead of Prime Trilogy. I think they want the Trilogy closer to when 4 would be finished.
Pikmin 4 - It's about time this IP came back as 4 was supposedly nearly done on the Wii U. It must have had a complete restart like Metroid. A 3 port is more likley, 4 probably 2021.
New Pokemon Snap - Be surprised if this isn't 2021 at least, could be even later.

Splatoon 2 is great fun. Picked it up on the back of the demo when there was a discount on it.

I played it for like 3 days and was dominating everyone despite being level 4 the whole time. It might've been because I was playing kids or something but they're usually the ones better than me these days.

Except if you really want to aim for a really high rank, I don't think cheaters matter a lot in Splatoon 2. Especially since you frequently change partners. And once the match is over, you move to the next one. Though I haven't played recently so I may be wrong.

I really like a lot Splatoon 2. Really good for short plays.
A pity they have stopped the splatfests. No clue if Splatoon 3 would be announced because it is quite rare Nintendo put a close iteration of the same game on the same console. But who knows.

Not sure what the benefit of digital is in this case apart from not having to swap discs.
It can be helpful if your household has two Switches, the same digital game can be played at the same time if you set them a special way.
Because if profile A has put Switch 1 as primary Switch, any other profile on Switch 1 can play the digital games of profile A. While profile A on Switch 2 (secondary Switch) can also play any of its games. (but the other profiles on Switch 2 can't play the digital games of account A).

So two people could play with a single digital game of Animal Crossing and have their own island. (other profile than A on Switch 1 and profile A on Switch 2).

Thank you for the detailed response. I'm leaning towards Mario Maker 2.

I just wish there was a proper Street Fighter or Tekken game. Those two are my favourite franchises :(

You can get Ultra Street Fighter 2 or the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection (12 Street Fighter games in one) for a decent price of £25~ on Switch if they take your fancy.

Hopefully the next Tekken game has a Switch version for you if it's been developed for current consoles. The last one was already three years ago! Hard to believe, but it could be a case of them waiting even longer and making it a PS5 & Xbox Series X game now. I wouldn't expect it to hit Switch if that's the case sadly :(

I looked at Street Fighter Anniversary, and although there are 12 titles, realistically, only about 3 are decent (SSF2 Turbo, SFA3 and SF3 3rd Strike) and even then, these are not the best versions of these games but rather just ports. E.g. 3rd Strike Online Edition is the best version of that game but that's not the one on here.

USF2 was more appealing for me as it is the definitive version of that game. The big issue with both of these is that I read the online scene is dead and I'm not gonna really just play against CPU. If there was a vibrant online scene in either of these, I'd get them.

There won't be anymore Tekken on current gen and as I won't buy a PS5, my days of Tekken are over :(

There will be a new King Of Fighters game coming out later this year/early next year so maybe that will come to Switch. I don't expect that to have a massive online scene but one of my best mates (who also has a Switch) will definitely get it so at least there's that.

Until then, I'll have to keep playing Smash Bros Ultimate!

Dragon Ball FighterZ is supposed to be a good fighting game. It's regularly on sale.

Didn't take me long to get to 250 moons in Mario Odyssey. Not sure I can be arsed to go for 500 but I'll give it a few more sessions. Short and sweet. Fun game with some occasionally infuritating camera positions.

I guess I should jump on the Animal Crossing bandwagon next? Super Smash Bros never really appealed to me.

I’ve found Steamworld Heist to be pretty good. Turn based shooter where you raid ships and try and grab loot and get out, add members to your team, upgrade, etc...

The dark side of the moon and darker side of the moon are really good so it's worth it imo.

Well the dark side of the moon is just re-doing boss fights I've already done but slightly harder and one after the other. Hardly essential.
Mushroom Kingdom was cool though. And taking over Bowser was a fitting climax.

I don't mind collecting the moons tbf so can probably push to 500 before I become bored.

It's not about essentials, it's just fun, darker side is much better, it's all platforming and very difficult.

My left joycon started drifting again. I'm thinking of getting the Hori Split Pad Pro now - does anybody here have it? If so, what's the verdict?

I always have a complex where I feel like one joystick is looser than the other. I can never tell if it's just in my head.

I have the Hori Mario Joy Con. I too bought it to replace one that had drift. So far no complaints, well worth the price considering how much Nintendo ones are. Bear in mind you can't use them wirelessly and they have no rumble.

Decent?!
One of the best in the last 10 years.

How far are you now?
I've heard it's crazy hard?

I loved the two Ori games, and they were tough, I'm not sure I couldn't handle HK if it's even tougher! Apparently it's like Dark Souls as a platformer!
I'm only at the beginning. I've never played a Metroidvania game so getting used to it is tough. There arent tutorials either.

But yesterday I made some breakthrough and am liking it more now.

You can attack downward in the air, and use that to jump on enemies and some environment. :)
Once you find yourself fighting Mantis Lords (boss battle), keep going at it until you've beaten it. Once you have beaten it you'll definitely be good enough to enjoy the battle system. :D

Thanks for the tip. It's not the battle but more to do with not knowing where to go. I've never been good with maps so maybe that's why haha

Currently playing Luigi's Mansion 3 with my 5 YO boy. Great game and he's really good at it now. So far only had to cheat a couple times and we're up to floor 11 with almost all of the gems.

If you feel lost and want to quit, get a map. I played it with a map due to a lack of patience, and I still loved the game.
