Big difference between zero and “close” though.

With next to no tourists from overseas, freedom of movement within Australia must be really important right now, to keep the economy even vaguely functional.

Seems a bit over-ambitious to get/keep the whole country at zero if you’ve ongoing outbreaks in NSW and Victoria (two most populous states, right?)
NSW are very close. There have been very very few cases of community transmission. Most other states have been covid free for a while now.

Keeping it at zero will come at immense cost as you are virtually looking at being in and out of lockdowns for the next couple of years. What Nordics and Germany are doing is just much more sustainable and realistic long term.
Lives are more important than economy and if repeated lockdowns are required so be it. And we are already back to almost normal life and health care.

That said our government are a bunch of cnuts and they may well revert to type soon.

You cannot save every single life. People will be dying from other causes too and putting economy in dire state will cost lives too. It’s just not manageable to try to keep it at zero until vaccine comes, especially as a lot of people will refuse vaccine anyway (here 67% people say they will never be vaccinated and most of them do not believe virus exists at all). There has to be a middle ground.

This is not an RCT. There are valid criticisms of it for the sampling method used.

I think on HCQ the UK trials deemed that it was ineffective. I would not look past that as the UK seems to be doing the best work in the world in terms of conducting studies in this pandemic, using randomized experiments with large samples.

100% agree.

The UK RECOVERY trial randomly allocated patients to treatments, which this study did not. And that trial showed a significant benefit of treatment with dexamethasone. In this study there was a much higher % of patients on HCQ that also received dex. So that’s the most obvious reason for them doing well.

Amazon in Australia isn’t like Amazon in the UK. Deliveries can take days.
Doesn't it take days in the UK too?

I imagine things are delivered quickly in London but live in the UK (Northern Ireland) and if i order stuff from Amazon the best i can hope for is 2-3 days before it's delivered.

Are you sure you are not Serbian, this sounds too familiar?

On second thought, you aren't, here the percentage of those who will never be vaccinated is more than 67%.

Bad jokes aside, given the stance of our peoples on this , I guess we should just get on with it and all contract the virus, as we will not be getting herd immunity from a vaccine.

Have the media found that one pub in the country where there's been trouble yet so the can put it on the front page and pretend everyone's at it?

Amazon UK is next day for me, or within a few hours if you use Prime Now.

You cannot save every single life.
But you can try. Plus economically we need to get to zero or close, to allow the economy to open up. We also can't open up travel between AU and NZ until then.

People will be dying from other causes too and putting economy in dire state will cost lives too.
Our elective surgery and testing is almost back to normal. You can only do this by keeping infections at or close to zero. Otherwise hospitals become hotspots that significantly contribute to the spread.

It’s just not manageable to try to keep it at zero until vaccine comes
In many countries the incompetent response to date has made this close to impossible now but AU and NZ may be able to. I guess we will see.

especially as a lot of people will refuse vaccine anyway (here 67% people say they will never be vaccinated and most of them do not believe virus exists at all). There has to be a middle ground.
We require vaccinations for kids to attend schools and childcare and certain child related social payments aren't paid to parents who refuse. It increased vaccination rates significantly as most who didn't vaccinate their kids weren't really anti-vaxers but mostly idiots. Sometimes you have to help people who are self-destructive especially when they endanger other people's lives.

Many European countries and US states have similar legislation. In a post vaccine world not being vaccinated will restrict an individual's ability to travel and whole countries with poor vaccination levels may find themselves banned from some places.

We’re fecked

I would never say "a generation" because this stupidity is universal as far as i've seen over the last 6 months, but for too long humans have skated by on the advances of medical technological breakthroughs without a deep understand and gratitude for what they've allowed us to do. We've accepted their gifts and then treated something like this with such arrogance for nature.

The only saving grace "as of this post" is that it didn't have the lethality across all age groups as some pandemics in the past have had. Genuinely upsetting to see that video.

You think the press shouldn't report this on the basis that it isn't happening in every single place? When it is exactly why they shouldn't have opened the pubs?

It not so much they report it it's there motive towards it. They'll word it and report it like it's a massive problem up and down the country which simply hasn't been the case.

Same with beaches, some photos were exposed as being manipulated by the lens to look like people weren't socially distancing when they were (well that was obvious anyway if they had nothing to hide they would have used a drone) and some were even caught out using pictures from last year.

The people flouting in the the UK is actually a very small minority, infact according to polls 83% of people would support a second lockdown (although I imagine that number will plummet when they realise the same level of Furlough support won't be there second time round).

It happens once to such a huge extent is a potential disaster that is newsworthy though.

As for further lockdowns, if they were to happen, they would need to do it properly this time with international travel bans and returning citizens made to quarantine and be tested properly.

But don't they have a responsibility to be a bit more accurate? Or failing that shouldn't their morality take over? As misguided as these gatherings are they've been going on here and there since the end of April and none have yet caused a spike, quite the opposite in fact.

Is there any country where people are wearing masks in restaurants and bars? Seems utterly absurd.
I think Bavaria was the only German state that wanted guests to put on masks when they get up from the table and go to the toilet for example when restaurants and bars reopened back in May. Not sure if that happened in the end. Waiters still have to wear masks but you see more and more places where they don't bother anymore.

Their job is to report the news which is the things that happen rather than those that don't.

Infections would have been much lower without them and wait until the weather gets colder. I'm sure a second wave will happen. When is probably the only unknown. I hope I'm wrong but .....

Did they really think that anyone who’s completely pissed in a public space was ever going to be able follow their rules even if they wanted to? They couldn’t possibly have thought that, so...

It’s hilarious the way you think you and your friends know what’s really happening, while the media is just making shit up. Be very careful. Keep this up much longer and you’ll be warning us all about contrails.

So to clarify, you think they're telling the truth and most towns had people out flouting the rules and taking the piss?

If they've got nothing to hide and these "pictures" are legit, why haven't they used drones?

 they have used drones across multiple beaches on the same day (Bournemouth, Brighton etc) and Soho was very obviously rammed. If you don't trust the photos or the media why not listen to the police?

Good thing they were outside in any case.
