You cannot save every single life.
But you can try. Plus economically we need to get to zero or close, to allow the economy to open up. We also can't open up travel between AU and NZ until then.
People will be dying from other causes too and putting economy in dire state will cost lives too.
Our elective surgery and testing is almost back to normal. You can only do this by keeping infections at or close to zero. Otherwise hospitals become hotspots that significantly contribute to the spread.
It’s just not manageable to try to keep it at zero until vaccine comes
In many countries the incompetent response to date has made this close to impossible now but AU and NZ may be able to. I guess we will see.
especially as a lot of people will refuse vaccine anyway (here 67% people say they will never be vaccinated and most of them do not believe virus exists at all). There has to be a middle ground.
We require vaccinations for kids to attend schools and childcare and certain child related social payments aren't paid to parents who refuse. It increased vaccination rates significantly as most who didn't vaccinate their kids weren't really anti-vaxers but mostly idiots. Sometimes you have to help people who are self-destructive especially when they endanger other people's lives.
Many European countries and US states have similar legislation. In a post vaccine world not being vaccinated will restrict an individual's ability to travel and whole countries with poor vaccination levels may find themselves banned from some places.
