I think he still had the fire in his belly at that point and was probably expecting a move away from the Bernabue to go and re-ignite his career. That didn't come and I think from that point he's lost a lot motivation in terms of football and is now quite happy to just make as much money as possible.

He did – there's a reason why he's found himself firmly on the bench and it's not only his complicated personal relationship with Zidane. He doesn't work off the ball, he's not really motivated and even his productivity had taken a hit – in 2019 he had scored 7 goals in around 2000 minutes – that's about a goal per 285 minutes.
