Feel like he is going to be vulnerable for as long as Lindeloff is his partner in defense. He really needs a speedy CB next to him to cover for Maguire's lack of pace. Then he may look world class. This way he feels like a liability sometimes.
I know him and Lindeloff werent exactly playing bad for the most part but theyre just not a partnership, we will never feel totally confident with those two.

Yes, you an scout and I agree with that to some extent. Yes we bought Vidic and Evra and they done very well. Have you forgotten the Djemba Djemba, Kleberson, Obertan, Bebe as well?

When you are winning titles, you can afford to take a risk on potentials, like Liverpool did with Minamino. However; the position Manutd were in, we needed someone to come in and make an impact now. Maguire has done that.

Forget what you and I think about what is better, if the manager decides he cannot play a certain style with Smalling, why persist?

I have no idea, yet Soyuncu has conceded 3 penalties and got 1 red card along with other mistakes he has made. Leicester's form is crap, he is in their defence which is leaking.

West Ham play a high line? we will see next week how high West Ham's line is. A team that has conceded almost 60 goals.
Yes, I guess I've repeated several times and made my point crystal clear - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Obertan, Bebe etc. were obviously the failed ones but they did little harm to the team, as compared to the 80m Maguire who took up the majority of transfer budget and refrained us from signing a good attacking midfielder, which was undoubtedly our no. 1 priority.

And yes, with the position we are in, we need someone to make an instant impact. Maguire replacing Smalling versus Bruno replacing Lingard/Pereira, which signing provides a greater impact? If Ole wants an upgrade on Smalling, fine, but the more sensible way is to spend the money on the prioritized position first, and use the remaining fund trying to find better options to polish the team.

People always fail to assess weaker teams properly because they only watch them in the only two meetings when they play against us. They assume it's how these teams set up to play week in week out, but they actually don't. Of course West Ham are going to sit deep when they face us next week, but that doesn't mean they don't play a high line when they face other midtable sides, especially when they were under Pellegrini.

I have no idea. Leicester conceded 48 goals last season with Maguire in the team, and they have improved the number to 36 this season with Soyuncu as the only notable change in defence. Yes he has made some mistakes and he got a red card for losing the temper and fighting with someone (I don't know how is that relevant honestly), but the same can be said for Maguire, who of course costed 4x the transfer fee of Soyuncu's.

No. That is total bullshit. The fact that we signed Bruno in Jan shows we didnt run out of money. We didn't want to pay the fee Sporting wanted.

The manager wanted a CB, so you ignore him and sign a CAM? that is your answer? That was his priority signing in the summer.

Okay, I fail to assess weaker teams.. generally teams that play a higher line have possession of the ball, otherwise you can't really play a high line. West Ham average 41.8 % possession this season. It is the 3rd lowest in the PL, can you explain that?

Manutd conceded 54 goals last season, and 35 this.
Manutd scored 65 goals last season, 61 so far this season.

So because we paid less money for Lindelof he is allowed to make mistakes? So now the transfer fee determines how many mistakes you are allowed to make?

How it is relevant? you need to listen to our manager.. he does not want defenders that are too emotional and lose their head. That mistake could cost Leicester top 4. If Maguire done that, the eruption on here would be mental.

Leicester's xGA is a lot worse than ours. Their defence has been getting away with it all season. Their expected goals against is about 10 worse than ours. They have one of the best keepers in the league this season for outperforming his xGA. That's the difference.

I love Harry. Is he worth the 80 mil, no, but he makes our team better and provides an immense amount of leadership this club has needed for the better part of a decade. I’m not worried about him at all, he will be fine.

Biggest change is their manager, when Rodgers took over Leicester had good defensive record with Maguire IIRC.

Ooor maybe we sell him and buy new defender to partner Lindelof. I don't know, but i guess it would be better to keep better defender, don't you think?

Wait, you actually think Lindeloff is better than Macguire? Both players lack quickness, but at least no one is going to out muscle Harry or out jump him, cant say the same for Lindeloff.

Yes, that's why we should keep Maguire.

Yes, i think that Lindelof is way better than Maguire. I don't think that Maguire is bad but Lindelof is way better. And about Lindelof's pace; it is getting boring to read how people repeating something what is just not true. It is like i keep saying that Maguire is bad on the ball.

The only thing Lindelof is good at is his positioning & anticipation which is why he is playing above Jones & Bailly but Maguire is also good at those two, the rest aspects from Lindelof are just average or below average. There is no single aspect of Lindelof is better than Maguire, even Lindelof is slightly quicker than Maguire but slightly quicker doesn't ignore the fact that Lindelof also lacks quickness. If Lindelof has quickness, he should be quick enough to cover Maguire on the goal we conceded vs Spurs.

Heading ability, strength, aerial duel, ability on the ball, technique, Maguire is superior than Lindelof.

Lindelof is not slightly faster than Maguire. Lindelof is much faster than Maguire. If you can't tell by watching games then see Lindelof's stats regarding speed. He is not Bailly but he is fast enough for defender.
Only things in which Maguire is superior are in the air and strength. Or to use your words; except that there is no single aspect of the game where Maguire is better than Lindelof. Harry is good on the ball, really good but so is Lindelof.

Is this what it has come to? pitting our two CB's against each other? These are who we have at the moment, back them as fans. There is so much important football to be played.

That is why Maguire is better. Lindelof shirks too for what it is worth.

If he's much faster then why Lindelof didn't come close quick enough to close the space on that Spurs goal?

Bruce mentioned Maguire has wonderful composure and technique to even compare it to Rio Ferdinand (below video at 2:36), if that's where you category Lindelof is then I don't know what game you were watching.

Even with passing stats alone, Maguire is also superior than Lindelof, (look at whoscored stat below). And Whoscored stats can be back it up with the pass map graph where Maguire's passes are much more progressive than Lindelof.

You can use my word if you can back it up like me.

Yet Maguire was on the end of stinging criticism after the draw with Southampton because he did not get in the air to challenge. Ever the forum for considered debate, clips circulated on Twitter suggesting he was more occupied by holding Wan-Bissaka. What the posts neglected was the shove by Stephens that forced Wan-Bissaka into Maguire, and the fact Maguire was trying to interrupt the ball’s arc before it reached Stephens, only to realise a split-second later it would be impossible.

On a personal level, a standout statistic is the 67 interceptions Maguire has made, the seventh-highest total of any Premier League player. Only Wilfred Ndidi (73), Diego Rico (72), Bednarek (72), Basham (71), Declan Rice (68) and Etienne Capoue (68) have more, an indicator of just how often Maguire steps into midfield to cut off opposition attacks early.
Apart from this there are few more good stats.

Some of this criticism of Maguire is getting ridiculous now - the fact people are trying to blame him for the 2nd goal on Monday when four players failed to stop the flick on just highlights that some people have a clear agenda.

Maguire isn’t very mobile. We all know that. Therefore from time to time he will be made to look silly. However, we shouldn’t let a couple of bloopers detract from the great work he does every game.

Last season we conceded 54 goals in the PL. So far this season I think we’ve conceded about 34. That’s a HUGE difference. Of course, that’s not only down to Maguire but it’s pretty telling for me.

Maguire is an excellent penalty box defender and plays the game on the front-foot. He looks to control situations rather than be dictated too.

I don't remember his games before lockdown started, but this would explain why if he looked a bit off-game.
Big up to the skipper for biting down and helping us stabilize.

That was when he didn't play in our first leg against City in cup game lost 3-1. I think 3 months break is enough for recovery.

Some people who criticised him were just throwing him under the bus for no reason. His performance still good after lockdown may be not as good as before lockdown but keep in mind the guy has been playing non-stop full 90 minutes and 120 minutes compared to anyone, could just be fatigue. Even Bruno & Shaw who played 120 minutes against Norwich had been given a breather in some of our game while Lindelof was rested in Norwich game.

Not sure why we have to start Maguire every game though. I know he's an important figure in the team, particularly in defence but is it really necessary to play him the full 90 mins against teams like LASK, Tranmere, Colchester etc.?

In this day and age, we are often too quick to judge players immediately instead of giving them time to adapt to the club and their way of playing. Imagine if we had binned or written off Vidic and Evra as soon as they had arrived at the club.
I've been critical of him, for sure. But, I'm optimistic that things will improve in his second season at the club. The football that we have been playing has improved since Fernandes has come in and having a player like Greenwood coming through the ranks has also improved things. I'm looking forward to the next season and I hope that he will have a great season for us.
For the remaining games, I hope that he proves his doubters wrong and has a great game for us. Southampton aside, we can finish the season strongly.

Because that's how important he is in our defense. Some people just don't notice his presence, his influence to bring composure & leadership in defense. Something what the others currently don't have.

Need a real captains performance tonight, no nonsense and silly goals giving away. Concentration needs to be better from the team at the back, time for leadership.

Our defence usually perform better away for some reason. At home it goes a bit wonky, not really sure why though, maybe because we try to play at a faster tempo and get more stretched on the counter?

So you mean without Maguire's composure and leadership in defence, we probably can't win LASK, Tranmere or Colchester?

Alot of fans don't want know about the things Maguire does for this team. They watch rival fan pages and see them criticise Maguire and then come on here and jump on the bandwagon.

There is a reason why Ole wants him in the team, there is a reason he is given the captaincy. Ole is not stupid, he has worked under SAF and various captains, he knows what kind of captain he wants. Maguire is that.

Every defender makes mistakes, we saw that yesterday. Because VVD game one ball away does it make him a bad passer? No.

Maguire has definitely stabilised our defence.

We would have won with them yes. Tuanzebe too. Those teams are crap.
Against Lask I would probably have played Maguire since I didn't know they would be crap given how far they reached.
We lost 2-1 to Bristol City with Lindelof & Rojo last time. Tuanzebe been injured.

He had very good game, won 9 headers which is probably more than anyone on the pitch. Defensively looked good too. He should pass the ball quicker though, first half he took too many touches.

His front foot defending was very good today. Had that moment when Matic missed the ball and he was too slow to react. Should know that DDG won’t come for balls like that. Overall he dominated his opponent.

I can only hope he needs rest because his been off it since the restart. Hes looks like hes second guessing everything, taking too long on the ball and getting caught out off it. Nearly cost us twice today and it's not the first time.

Is he aware that when you're trying to score with a header the aim isn't just to make sure you get your head on it and that's that? You like... Have to direct it and shit.
Still seems to be the only one who is threat in set pieces, the others just not aggressive enough to approach the ball.
