Bring back Phil Jones

It’s bad when you send a defender on loan to Italy because he’s not as good as someone else and he turns out to be worse than Smalling.

Is Lindelof any better than Johnny Evans? I have asked the question before and I am asking it again. Cos it feels like repeatedly over the past few years we've sold players and replaced them with players that are no better. The way he lets people get across him is criminal. Vardy will be licking his lips at the prospect of a near post run in front of him.
No, Evans was better but he did play really poorly when he had the chances under LVG

Thought he did ok today, no mistakes unlike Maguire and Brandon
No wonder some think he is any good. His defending for the first was as bad as they get. Seeing how much he shirks responsibility in defense, he probably would have loved if it was anyone but him that had to defend there.

He was good but....just kidding.
Awful defending for first goal. In the rest of the game he was good really but that defending for first goal was criminal.

He had a good game just the other day so no point in panicking. Got too easily beaten for the 1st goal, mind you.

He was bad today, and Maguire did everything in his power to match him, including conceding a carbon copy goal. But then again so was the whole team.

Bailly was actually the best of the 3 until he went off.

Let's strikers get on the wrong side of him way too easily.

Either a physical flaw or concentration

He's on par with Jones and Smalling who both have similar flaws, difference being he's not injured as much and he can pass better than Smalling

New CB a must.

Never been Lindelof's fan (and no fan of Smalling either), but I'd assign the blame for Giroud's goal to De Gea. David never comes out of his line to save a situation, just sitting on the line with his weak ass wrists and his dumb expression.

Its all well and good being able to pass the ball but he takes an age to release the ball by which time the opposition team are well set.

What was he pointing at while he let Mount have a free shot at goal?
Surprised no one else is picking this up. De Gea was 100% at fault and it was a poor ball from Brandon but what the hell was he doing? It was there to be won/closed down but he kept backing off because he's scared of making a decision and taking responsibility.

Backing off and letting the opponent come into your half or towards the edge of your penalty box is not 'smart' defending. It's just passive and weak.

He did this against Traore at Wolves too where the ball was there to be won.

There was this particular corner in the first half where there was no danger whatsoever from it but still he decided to duck away from heading the ball.

It didnt even shock me.

There was also a mishit pass from fred a little too high. He saw he'd have to head the ball and just ducked under it and let it go out for a throw in

They were all good until Bailly had his injury. Imo they should easily switch to play with 4 at the back as that is how they have played the whole season, but somehow it looked as it took some time to adapt.

Heading the ball and keeping it in play in that situation would have been worse as he likely wasnt sure he could head it and be sure it wouldnt end up in a dangerous situation

If you pay close attention, he did the pointing thing multiple times during this game. He just can't defend. He can intercept at times or put a tackle like a midfielder would, but he's not a real defender. He lacks the fundamental understanding of what it means to be a CB.

This is exactly why so many people dislike him. IF I had 1 word to describe him it would be passive.

He will happily back away and just stay in the defensive line until the either get too close and he can block it or let them shoot.

Yes the pass wasn't good but he didn't make any attempt to come out and get it. Meet mount there and foul him if you have to! Mike Dean clearly left his cards at home so I doubt he would have got booked.

He's just a massive liability. A few fancy dribbles out from the back isn't enough to cover for his lack of physical capabilities.

Basically another Evans, soft as putty. Where do we get these guys?

He's really good on the ball though.

Problem is, we're obviously not going to replace Maguire, so if we want to upgrade our defence it has to be him to make way. Unfairly perhaps, but that's how it is
Why? Playing favoritism is a pretty good way of fecking things up.

Not that I am saying that Lindelof is better than Maguire, I think they are close to each other (both with different sets of weaknesses) with maybe Harry slightly edging it. But why one should be untouchable while the other not?

For what is worth, I think that Lindelof fecked up again (for the first goal), as did Maguire for the third. I think that during the course of the game, Lindelof was the better player and actually offered something going forward.

That's the problem with Lindelof though. Any 50/50 and he will choose the 'safe', passive decision and not take responsibility.

It was a poor pass from Fred but we see these over hit balls all the time. You can head it high and let it drop/shield/kick out depending on whether the bounce may be fortuitous.

Poor pass from Fred - duck.
Poor pass from Brandon - back peddle.
Poor combination play from Brandon down the left - let Giroud get goal side.

6/10 player at best, who's never shown elite performances or has elite athletic attributes; no more no less.

It's not fault his other defenders can't get fit but that still doesn't stop us from analysing his individual performance. Yet we have many here, who seem to think he's doing an adequate job simply by not seemingly making too many mistakes. He's not Lingard levels bad but it's an apt comparison. Placeholder, who may be trying his honest best but he's a weak link. I mean, the big mistakes aside, was he as bad as AWB today (or has been the past few games)? No but then he's not shown anything close to AWB's level of performances this year i.e single handedly shutting down players or areas of the pitch.

He is not, and neither is Maguire. All three are around the same level, bench players for a title challenger. Or undroppable/captain for the current United.

This is just nit picking it was a shit pass and it was right option not to head it given he couldnt make a quick assessment of the risk. Not sure why anyone would pick at that of all things

You can head it high? And then invite pressure. The pass at that speed to it isnt easy to head it up with control to just got to you. No he made the right choice especially as its unexpected

Lindelof had a poor game but this seems like a witch blaming him for not keeping in a shit pass that went over his head

He’s simply not a top 3 Pl centre back not even as 4th choice, bring back smalling sign Koulibaly or Skriniar and get rid of Lindelof, Rojo and Jones
Maguire, Smalling, Bailly , Smalling and Axel is a decent quintet if CBS

Enfact when Barcelona offered 40m last year for Lindelof whose the idiot on the board who didn’t sanction that sale,
Experience like Matic is key and Smalling is still one of England’s 2 best centre backs !!

Because we spent £80 million on Maguire and he's the club captain. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out which would be replaced first.

He played more or less every PL game this season and we’re 1 point from top 3 so I’m not sure how you worked that out.

He's unfortunately right. Maguire is English, captain and 80m. The club won't replace him any time soon. He'll be a starter for several years upcoming regardless of his performance. He's not a Lukaku type of player to be able to sell him with good money to a top team. No one will touch him beside us.

So yeah, unfortunately too, Lindelof will be the one to be thrown under the bus. I think he was very poor today, but he had a pretty good season imo, and I'm sure we'll end up benching him then selling to Serie A team too where he'll do very well.

Which one is worst, IMO. Otherwise, by the same logic, we should have kept Rooney and Sanchez too.

I have seen people here saying that the fee was not Maguire's fault and he should not be judged on it. But also, advocating him to be untouchable precisely because of the massive fee.

Also, the captaincy can be stripped. It was a moronic decision to make captain an average player who has been here for 6 months.

It's not a case of sell or keep. He needs quality competition and if he ups his game he starts and if a new player is better so be it. He gives away too many soft ones in my opinion despite being a good player.

Depends on the manager. A no-nonsense manager would not care that much IMO, and would do what is best for the club. If the manager thinks that Lindelof is better than Maguire (and there can be a debate on it) and signs a new defender, then it would be moronic to play Maguire. If he thinks that Maguire is better, then Magure plays.

Some managers don't give a shit about the Englishness. Pep Guardiola put Hart out of the team the second he arrived there, and Hart was next to Rooney, the most beloved English player back then.

I am pretty sure that Maguire and Lindelof will start together next season. They have been good for most of the season. If there will be a new CB he will not be a 100 mill top player but someone at the same level as Lindelof or below, as a backup player and to compete for starting xi. If big money are being spent for next season, it will not be in defence.
