People will see this as an attempt of the post-2008 City to "create" some big club history but I think this is actually a reasonable decision. If City would have a statue in front of their stadium from someone in the 70s who played 10 years for the club with over 300 games, 60 goals, 4 league titles and 8 cups nobody would bat an eyelid. People will question why the decision was made immidiately after he left, but why not? It`s not like his status as a City legend will have changed in 10 years, might as well honor him now.
The Joe Hart training pitch decision was cringe, I agree. But unlike Hart, Silva was a genuine world class player for a whole decade, together with Aguero the figure who changed City`s success in England.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
I think if they made a statue of Kompany, Aguero and Silva in maybe 10-15 years or so I'm not sure many people would bat an eyelid at it as all three are legends of the club - but to do it now seems a bit naff.
Exactly! It’s not about Silva being undeserving it’s the timing of it. He hasn’t even retired yet for Christ sake.

Is this one really that controversial/banterish?

He'd be a a legend at any club for doing what he's done in his ten years at City.
A legend yes - but immortalised as a statue right now? City are pushing to create a heritage and Silva was a great PL player but it's not like you see Terry or Lampard statues outside Stamford Bridge or even Gerrard at Anfield although no doubt they'll build a 20ft, Christ the Redeemer style Klopp one soon.

It's not undeserved for his contributions. But it is a little hasty.

City look like they've been counting down the days to his exit so they can start creating the narrative of a history.

If this had been built a decade from now, nobody would have anything negative to say about it. But statues are meant to be records of the past. This is like building a white marble temple to Zeus in 2020.

Don't see what's so funny. They are a much smaller club than we are and have less of a pool to.pick from.

Made easier by the fact he’s such a likeable player, otherwise it’d be laughed off as the insanity it is

Going by those criteria, United could have statues of about 45 players. Terracotta Army of United legends.

One for Silva is about right for a nothing club like City though. They’re so desperate.

This might get more laughs but instead of having a statue of Silva I think they should have one of Kompany, Silva and Aguero as a trio. They have defined this 'era' for City and have been the players that have been the core for it.
But this era has been slightly underwhelming for them. Its not as if its complete dominance, hell we woud have 30 statues since 92 alone if we celebrated an era like this.
If managed properly they should have multiple era like this over the next 50 years & better players who will have dominated Europe will go without

As good as he has been for City he’s hardly give a contribution on the level of Jude Bellingham.

I mean there are plenty of examples of clubs getting a lot of money and doing nothing with it. From 2010 - 2020 they've won 4 PL titles and 7 domestic cups and a domestic treble. This is the best the club has ever done in its history and yes, it was due to finances but the players on the pitch also have to contribute and people like Silva/Kompany/Aguero most definitely have. Not every club is United with a rich history, to them it's a defining era for them.

25 year anniversary.

If City wait another 15 years, that'll be about right.
Just sounds like it's okay for one club but because it's City everyone will laugh at it when not all clubs have the same history.

Are they going to retire his shirt number, too?

I was listening to BBC Radio Five Live at the beginning of the season where they were interviewing a City fan about Silva leaving at the end of the season. He and the presenter both agreed that there wouldn't be a single dry eye in the stadium when he played his last game for City. They were right. There wasn't a single dry eye in the stadium. In fact, there were no eyes at all.

Prophetic.

Didn't the SAF statue go up before he retired...?
Get out.

Yaya toure kick started their domination. You would think it’s him then aguero, kompany and then Silva in thy order

Clearly it’s quite small time. Silva is a good player but he wouldn’t even be anywhere near a statue at Utd even if he repeated those feats.

Silva has been a quality player, but I think he's being a bit overrated. Huge impact in their recent history of course, but does he deserve any more of an accolade than Kompany, Toure, De Bruyne or Aguero? I don't think so.

How is that small time? Does only big clubs can celebrate their big players? David Silva marked their history and in their context it makes total sense to celebrate him and a few others.

If we did it for a player who had the same level of achievement then Nicky Butt would have a statue.

It’s just quite funny considering City have only been relevant since the oil money came in. Sure he’s a good player but proper ‘elite’ clubs don’t put up statues of good players, they save that for the absolute best. City just highlighting their lack of history yet again.
