I mean, people, we have a massive thread in the Current Events forum about police in the US and UK doing a terrible job, being unecessarily agressive with people during interactions and there are even poeple in this thread who've posted content in there turning on Maguire...because Greece, the second most corrupt country in the EU suddenly has police who are beyond reproach? Not to mention the attention this stuff has received world wide since the death of George Floyd.

Come the feck on. Let's wait for more information to come out before we pass judgement on one of our own players.
You can't seriously be trying to make a comparison between a discussion about genuine police racial bias and over aggression with minorities that lead to deaths with....police arrest drunk brit abroad.

No, you're missing the most basic point. Police doing a bad job. Coming in, causing chaos unnecessarily, busting heads and asking questions later; i.e., bad policing. This can happen to anyone regardless of race.

A statement from the Hellenic Polices South Aegean region press office said: "Three foreigners, aged 27, 28 and 29, were arrested today (August 21, 2020) in Mykonos by police officers of the Mykonos police department.

"Patrolling police officers in the area of Mykonos intervened and normalised a dispute between citizens, however, three foreigners involved in the incident turned against them, insulting and hitting a police officer with fists.

"The three foreigners were taken to the Mykonos Police Station, where upon their arrival they strongly resisted, pushing and beating three police officers.

"One of the detainees then tried to offer money so that the trial against them would not be completed. The arrested (men) were taken to the Syros Prosecutors Office."

They'll be 30 in 3, 2 and 1 years. Hopefully the Greeks will be lenient based on their old age.

Maguire what have you bloody done! I guess we will have to trust in Bailly and Jones staying fit to sort out our defense.

Yeah, not buying the police statement. No one just starts wailing on cops out of the blue.

What likely happened is that some insults were thrown, the cops got physical and an altercation ensued.

This will probably just result in a fine and some PR message by Maguire "I realise I have role model responsibilities, I'm sorry etc".

Nothing to see here.

Exactly, there's a lot going on behind the scenes in European football at the moment against Man United, the PL and the FA and I wouldn't be surprised if this was politically orchestrated.

Not this again. He once mentioned wanting a new challenge, which we all fecking do over fighting over top four and no silverware, then the rest has been complete paper talk. If you think Bruno's going to keep his head down and be content with us sitting in sixth or seventh in the league, and struggling to get out of the Europa League group stages, then take a look at how he finished up at Sporting: completely committed on the pitch, but he's going to ensure the club matches his ambition off it.

I said Pogba wouldn't be leaving this time last year and was laughed out of town by people. He's still here and will likely sign a new contract.

Phil Jones is still here. No fecker wants him, either. Wonder if he’d sign a new contract?

This all sounds so very convenient and made up

so the police were there and 1 of them randomly decided to punch a policeman? Right ok.

then they took them back to the police station and they started fighting more police? Hahahaha.

what a joke that is.

unless they’ve all lost their minds I have serious doubts believing that wording.

Have you seen the stats for how many policeman are assaulted every day just in this country? Wouldn't surprise me if one of his hard case mates did.

I wouldn’t worry, lads. David Gill is some big swinging dick in UEFA or FIFA nowadays. He’ll have this sorted sharpish to have Harry down the nearest English pub for an egg and chips dinner.

No, it's not. That's in the case of self defence when you believe your life is in danger. Unless you're saying that Maguire expected he and his friends to be murdered by the police officers and was therefore in his rights to attack an officer(s)?
Also good of you to omit this bit which would clearly have been in effect on this occasion: The rule that the defendant can rely on any honest belief is altered where the defendant has consumed alcohol or drugs.
Oh, it's also interesting that you're quoting English law for a Greek crime, you do know that the law changes dependant on where you are and not where you're born right?
The right to defend yourself is self-defense. What on earth did you think I was talking about if not that? Also, you're making a wild assumption that Maguire was pissed during the incident.

This little 'self-defense' debate has nothing to do with Maguire. I made a fairly innocuous comment about not leaping to conclusions regards the Maguire incident, as he could simply have been defending himself, to which you took offense and turned it into something else.

A man has a right to defend himself or another if he perceives them under threat of violence, he is then allowed to respond with the necessary means. It's up to a judge and jury to decide at a later date if that threat was genuine or otherwise, not you my friend ;)
