You cannot look a gift horse in the mouth, and sometimes, fate puts a player available that you hadn't even considered as priority, but you just have to take advantage of the opportunity.
To have both Shaw and Reguilon will be a massive thumbs up.
The only positive I see in this is that if Shaw has another injury plagued season, we have a bit more experienced option in Reguilon other than Brandon. Long term I don't think he is good enough and at the moment I think Shaw will prove to be a better LB.

We have no one in our team who can put in a good cross, Reguilon can. He will be a good option for matches when we play 3-5-2 with Shaw as a CB as well, and also for when Shaw eventually gets injured. Think it's a really smart buy if it goes through. Williams is not good enough to play left back for the first team at the moment.
From what I've seen of him I am not convinced to be fair. Someone like Telles from Porto is a clear upgrade on this regard in contrast. Re Brandon, I think we are too fast in writing him off, the kid just turned 20 and has some great games during the season.

Who can we feasibly buy that is much better than Shaw? there isn't a great depth of left backs out there.

Shaw on his day is a great LB and is really important to our play, hence why we fell off so much last season when he got injured.

Williams isn't in the same level as Shaw with the ball. Reguilon will help Shaw be able to rest/rotate more often, and if he gets injured the quality doesn't drop. That helps the team way more.
I agree and it was also evident in Rashford's game too. As I already mentioned Telles from Porto seems like an obvious and cheap upgrade in attacking sense, something I am not convinced with Reguilon.

Our starting 11 is good, not perfect but good. That quality will mean nothing without depth at fullback and the attack. All players play better when they're fresh. Our current situation will lead to Shaw getting injured quickly, Martial pulling a muscle quickly and Rashford possibly getting more serious back injuries. All can be avoided/mitigated with standard depth, which is what we did with VdB in midfield to spell Pogba and Bruno. Quality backup that will actually be used to both rotate and compete with the starters.

Reguilon can come in and become a starter here because of a better fitness record and more attacking talent than Shaw. Shaw might even be moved to CB in that scenario, who knows. Think he'd do alright there tbh.
If we decide to bring him in I surely hope that's what happens and I want him to prove me wrong.

Are you guys high? In what world are we actually getting this lad?
Yeah A left back named "best in la liga" is not only going to be deemed surplus but is going to leave madrid for more game time to join us and wait for shaw to get injured to play football?
Lets not mention why on earth we as a club would pay 30 mill and big wages to challenge Shaw?
Oh and dont forget before we add competition we actually have areas in need of significant investment....
Stop getting on the media merry go round guys amd buy the latest football manager for your fantasy transfer picks

Left back is an area in need of significant investment. Along with right-wing, I'd say the neediest.

The thing about left-back is we have no prospects who can step up, this or next season, and probably, not even in 2 seasons time. Seeing as we need to buy a left-back, we may as well do it now.

Telles just doesn't seem fancied by anybody it seems. He's been able to leave from Porto for the last 2 years or so but hasn't had any takers. I can't say I've watched him much but he must have flaws in his game + lots of previous injuries that put teams off.

Not now it aint mate. CB and RW.

I think the way we have been heading over the 2 years is obvious proof that we dont do these kind of knee jerk signings anymore.
We have Shaw, a top premier league left back on big wages. And a capable Williams.
If were signing anyone for LB itl be a value signing to compete with Williams and put pressure/ fill in for shaw with an eye to the future. Not a 30+mill luxury item who is not going to come here to sit on the pine.

United have 7 CBs, 8 when we add Shaw; plus TFM, plus 2 or 3 good prospects at U23 I'd be happy to play against weaker cup sides. Yet you want to persuade Woody a new CB is a priority? Easier to do that after you first persuade him to sell some excess CBs.

We have 1 half-fit, left-footed, LB.

Firstly, Williams is a more of a RB depth for me, not a LB. If Smalling stays, we'll have to go for a RW and LB.

We have 2 CBs who have very good injury record, our first choice LB's injury record is very poor and then the back up is young Williams who is right footed which means the build up play is messed up with him always cutting in and playing narrower. Tbh we need better quality too.

As a CB back up we have Bailly, so LB position should be higher priority, even more so with Shaw's injury record.

Has Shaw ever been able to do 2 games a week for more than a few weeks before he gets injured? Because that's our schedule this season. So yeah, we desperately need a left back that can compete with him and potentially play with him in different systems. This signing is exactly what we need defensively, otherwise Shaw will quickly get injured and we'll be forced to overplay Williams at left back where he isn't very good.

I meant the assists, Shaw has 3 I think while Reguilon has 5 assists, and one is supposedly awful in his attacking game while this guy will be a breath of fresh air? I personally am not convinced that Reguilon is worth the trouble.
Shaw had 2 last season, and they were against Tranmere and Astana. Reguilon got 5, 4 in La Liga and 1 against us in the Europa League semi. He has 8 in 2 seasons, while Shaw has 10 in 8 seasons. So it is quite different.

Hmmmmm.

Also unforrunately i wont be persuading woody at all because last time i checked i dont have a backroom job at the club.. atm anyway.
But i do know were not after every single player the papers link with our clubs name for addictive click bait and that a world class CB and a RW are the clear and obvious holes in the squad.

Rw is of course a priority, but LB is 2nd on the list. Cb we have options and can survive a season. Lb if we sign nobody, we are fecked just as if we sign nobody in attack, the options we have are fecked as they won't be rested ever. It'll be the summer restart schedule but for the entire season basically.

Like i said. Do you actually think were going to prize a player wanting regular football fresh from a full "lb of the year" season to come and play every 3rd or 4th game of the season?

I don't doubt that RW is the priority, but that seems off now. If it is not happening now, think we will try again next year. Makes sense then to move on to other targets that are possible.

Either this guy, or Telles would be good for 20m odd.

Yeah and after RW I honestly reckon the next priority is CB but our top target isn't available until next summer.

So that is probably the reason we are looking at the next priority after AM which would be LB.

Yes I know a Matic replacement should be higher priority but clearly Ole is going to keep faith with Fred & Scott this season

Where did you get every 3rd or 4th game? He'll probably oust Shaw as the starting left back due to better attacking and better fitness. When Shaw is fit and in form I'm sure he'll get games as a left CB or as part of a back 3 with Reguilon at wing back. Or they can just rotate every game and still play once a week each due to the fixture build up that we'll have. I suggest you look at the schedule. We play every mid week and every weekend until mid January where its the 1st week without a midweek fixture this season (assuming we stay in the Carabao cup for a few rounds).

This is a good point to be honest. The fixture list is going to be even more congested this season and we can’t expect Shaw to play that many games in quick succession. Williams is obviously an option but I’d prefer it if we got a good, attacking left back too.

According to his fans he's our best left-footed CB, as well as LB.

I won't be moving Shaw out of position because he won't be fit enough to play 2 games per week for the next 5 months. He'll move himself to the injury bench.

Also unforrunately i wont be persuading woody at all because last time i checked i dont have a backroom job at the club.. atm anyway.

The reason we're not buying players you want is we don't have the money. We don't have the money because we can't sell anyone. We can't sell anyone because their existing contracts pay them too much, and we also want too big a fee.

I'm told we have a world class CB called Maguire. The one we paid £80m for last summer.

£25M hasn't been luxury money for a while. Callum Wilson, Gabriel, Ollie Watkins, Eberechi Eze, Castagne and Aaron Ramsdale have all gone for around that kind of money this season. All of them are okay players, but none are exactly top drawer (even if one or two might become that). £25M either gets you promising youngster or mid-table experience these days. Reguilon is the former.

Its something really being overlooked I feel. We were dead on our feet with our current squad after 3 weeks of that schedule. Now itll be 10 months of it (cup competitions being the mid week game every time pretty much). Reguilon will push Williams to be Wan Bissakas backup which will work better IMO, and we'd be set for depth for the back 4 (Bailly, Tuanzebe/smalling for now/jones and rojo still here/Mengi as CB is numbers at least), while Van de beek, Fred, Mctominay has us set for midfield depth. An attacker is vital to rotate with Martial, Rashford and Greenwood though, and that would still be lacking if we only get Reguilon. Need both to survive the season.

I'm not sure but I don't think Shaw has had one single season in his career yet where he hasn't had injuries, and next season we will be playing an average of 2 games per week with no respite..
It's unfair to say Brandon can cover, the young lad is playing out of position, he is a Right Back, and should be cover for AWB.
We must move away from this "make do and mend" mindset, and sticking random players in random positions because they can "do a job there".

Where has this idea come from that Williams is a right back? Every game I watched him in at youth level he was a marauding left back!

Really hope we get this over the line! Bruno, Donny and Reguilon are exactly the types of players we should be signing - young, promising, hungry players from abroad at better prices than the English equivalents.

actually shows me that at least someone at the club now knows what they are doing!

He is an extremely good footballer (and showing it presently) including in attack. He was integral to our record breaking run of 4 consecutive games won by 3 goals or more. We need attacking cover for his position but not because he is not a great attacking fullback (because he is excellent and will prove it 100% next season injuries permitting) but because he is injury prone and we need some diversity in the position.
Come on, what it this. Shaw is not an extremely good footballer. He is not excellent and it will not prove it 100% injuries permitting, that’s your opinion - I’d say it’s highly unlikely. He’s been here for many years and he’s never cemented the left back-position, far too many injuries and lack of form, missing that ruthlessness after his big injury all those years ago. Shaw is a very good defender when focused, mediocre when going forward and far, far behind the best in the world - aka the extremely good and excellent ones.

Because when some people find out that he's right footed, they like to make it up that he's an RB. But he's not.
