I'm not Biden's biggest fan but I thought he did as well as he could.

Except Stand back and stand by is a call to arms and not just a failure to condemn white supremacy. Which isn't far away from "levying war against the state", which is actually Treason under Federal and probably State law. Just wow.
Yeah, with that and this tweet shortly after

The election is going to be messy and bloody.

Trump wins this. Seen enough clips this morning to know Trump will win. Anyone who watched Live will have their mind made up. The highlights is where it's won.

Trump's Tone of voice was much more direct, Any point Biden tried to make he was shot down by Trump. Biden tone is weak, aged, he even looks tired. His movement is slow.

Feck me. 4 more years of this p***k

The concensus is that this was a clusterfeck for Trump. Floating voters will mostly be pushed to Biden.

Nah, have to strongly disagree. Trump looked like a buffoon who will only appeal to his base. Look at the numbers, Biden only needs to win the Rust Belt and these «debates» are unlikely to move the needle

I didn't see the debate and just saw the clips and thought Trump looked like an absolute p***k and toddler. Biden was trying to keep it civil. It is like when a drunk idiot on a train next to you is shouting random crap and you are trying to avoid him as much as possible. I don't see how this helps Trump.

Tempted to put a bit of money on a Trump win, as a hedge - odds are up to 2.25. Then I could buy some good booze if he wins.

Didn't see anything in the highlights that would really impact anything. Trump refusing to condem the white supremacist groups might be a big talking point to the left but everyone knows that by now.

I feel like the antifa issue is a massive win for the republicans sadly. It supports their needed culture war and the Dems have allowed thd narrative to form that they're for the chaos and Trump is making tough choices. The Dems need a strong push to highlight the violence is caused by Trump and that they'd de-eacalate both sides.

the disintegration of jeb and family. 1st half is ok, 2nd half is the really nice personal stuff as he gets tired of the boos.

Is it just me or is materially more lucid at that point than what we see today? I feel like there was at least proper sentence structure and thought-out points from him there, which I don't think I've seen for years.

Wallace was a huge let down. He was a spectator at times, letting Trump talk over Biden and hardly fact checking. Despite that Biden won, Trump's base will love it, but if there were any Independents out there Trump as lost them in that debate.

Being realistic, any plan to tackle climate change will require a reduction in animal agriculture..
As will any plan to tackle obesity or any plan to conserve clean water or any plan to end world hunger. Few things have such a large negative impact on our planet as our habit of eating animals.

One of the candidates all but confirmed nazi sympathies. What more is there to discuss? How can this election even be a close call?

Next debate is the man who is the epitome of soul sucking boredom in Pence Vs Harris so that'll be fun, hope he can be in the same room as another Woman.

Harris should have a bit of thigh and cleavage on show to really feck with his head. Pence would probably run into the back Eric Dier esque and knock one out into the bible.

Reading online it seems some people think that this debate will convince some Trump supporters to stop supporting him. In what world is this debate the final straw for anyone

All 'knockabout stuff' as predicted.

Does anyone know the final viewing figures and did everyone stay tuned in until the end?

Thought Trump just shaved it, simply because he looked and sounded stronger and came back quicker. Biden did some impressive weaving, trying to open up Trump's guard, but he looked tired, as if were past his bedtime and the hot chocolate drink was going cold on the night table.

Saw a lot of the worst of American politics, didn't see much that was good, everyone's wondering what effect it would have on the undecided/floating voter, my guess after watching this is many will decide not to bother!

This guy was apparently also moaning that Biden doesn’t support Medicare for all and the Green New Deal last night, as if that was somehow not already known going in.

He’s also wrong on the point in this tweet since the core constituencies of the Dem party would have been more animated by things Trump said (specifically the Proud Boys comment, going after Biden’s kid etc) than any policy issues.

This year’s debates are really more about galvanizing the base and getting the very few undecideds left to make up their minds. Trump probably helped keep most of his base on board but in the process probably also turned off a lot of undecideds with his cartoonishly negative antics.

My own cod psychological take is that, when the country is looking increasingly chaotic with the economy, with Covid, and with civil unrest, looking like you enjoy adding petrol to a bonfire isn't going to come across well. Particularly when you're the sitting president that's already supposed to be dealing with those problems.

But I also don't really think debates change much.

Wait your facts don't support the Trump yelling incoherently is awesome showman stuff and sleepy Joe is just as bad narrative! So confused.

All Biden had to do from this was come out neutral. I think he did.

Trump had a huge opportunity to gain ground and appeal to fence voters: all he achieved was making the fringes of his cult a little uncomfortable.

I'd cancel the other debates if this is how Trump is going to do it.

Agreed. Trump tends to struggle when he’s forced to talk policy and adhere to any kind of debate structure, then melts down when he can’t insult and bully his way through exchanges.

Wallace did as much as he could without shouting at Trump to shut up when Biden was speaking. Hopefully the next moderator sort out how to deal with him before the next debate.

So we learned nothing new.
Learned nothing new but for most causal observers it was a prominent reminder of both people's failings. And given Trump has been more visible among casual observers over the last few weeks, and his failings are never hidden, it might make more of a difference to Biden.

Doesn't mean much if almost all of the people that think less of Trump now are dem voters anyway, which is entirely plausible. I wonder how many people that are saying Trump came off worse time were also saying Trump came off worse last time.

IMO The problem with American media is that it's so bias. I'm not talking about any individual channel, I talking about the whole thing red or blue, so it's hard to guage how anything is going in that country, theirs very little actual independant news. It's all spinned one way or another to suit whatever the individuals political agenda is.

In saying all that, I think you could put a Mr Potato head up against Trump and he should win.

It really baffles me how someone can openly give a shout out to racists groups in a presidential debate and that isn't an automatic death call for their chances. America really is a messed up place, where nearly half the country will still back him and not even question the statement. How fox and co spin it should be entertaining at least, if they even both to mention that part at all.

It seems a really odd phrase to use. Was he feeling threatened and just blurted out a call to arms for one of his more aggressive support groups, or is there some reason that could ever have been a useful thing to say?

No idea what he was thinking. I've only watched the shortened highlight clips, but from what I could tell he was being pressured to make a simple statement saying he doesn't support white supremacy, and ended up giving a call to arms for the Proud Boys instead. I would have thought he could easily give a generic statement saying he is against all forms of racism, including against white people, and his base would have just gone the whole *wink wink* we can read between the lines thing they always do.

Or they have a busy life and don't pay attention until its election time

Just because we all have hours to waste on the Internet doesn't mean everyone else does
As if you need more than a few minutes to know the difference between Biden and Trump, aside from the fact they're both old white men. People that disengaged are an embarrassment to their democracy.

If they said they're both shit and I can't decide whether to vote for the less shit one or not vote at all, I'd say that's vaguely understandable. But otherwise these people have literally lived under a rock or honestly have no sense of things they in a democracy, and no sense even of their own personal motivations.

It's plain as day centrism, appeal to all sides, get back to how things were vs. extremism, fight all sides but your own, dismiss career politicians as worthless. It may not be a good choice but it's not a hard choice.

This (from a conservative commentator) seems likely to me. Once again, they're setting the bar at "Biden has dementia", which is a low bar to clear if you aren't MAGA or on the very far left.

Couldn't the studio just Trump's mic off when it was Biden's turn to do an 'uninterrupted' statement (and vice versa)?

I know he's the sitting president but if anything that's even more of a reason not to let him dictate the format of the debate.

It was one of the few things I saw live and the proud boys mention was almost entirely unprompted. He was asked to condemn racism, he tried to deflect to antifa, he was pressed to condemn right wing antics and he said he would then tried to deflect back onto antifa, he was pressed again and then asked who specifically he should call out, right wing extremism is reiterated and he just jumps in with the proud boys comment. It just looked like one of those moments where he was pushed to the point where he had to say the most honest thing he thought at the time, desperate to stoke support among the people he likes. It was just odd

I don't follow US politics at all, I'm admittedly very naive in matters re this. but I tuned in for this. It was a shitshow from start to end. Trump as per, was his usual self, I knew what to expect from him. It was Biden who disappointed me. In my naivety I was hoping a career politician would wipe the floor with a chancer like Trump, fact check him on numbers, push him on his delayed reaction to covid etc. He at times tried and was for the most part shouted down by Trump, but he's been around the block long enough to be able to deflect from these types of bullying tactics. Trump was spouting stats, I'm no expert but he has previous for making factually inaccurate statements, Biden really didn't challenge him on them. I thought the moderator/presenter was awful. Sad day for american politics when there are the 2 best you have to fight it out for the president.

I hear you, but it is basically impossible to discuss with a maniac like Trump. Biden should refuse to do the last two debates on the grounds of not wanting to legitimize a racist president.
