You sat next to an exploitive piece of shit to be fair.

You’re also talking nonsense. There is no system that stops giving more than you make. That person could give you all of their money tomorrow. He won’t make it back this year.

If companies were taxed adequately, they’d cut their cloth. They should be forced to invest in the markets they profit from. It’s not difficult.
Fair enough. Perhaps I'm just naive.

All that adds up to though is 'rich guy more likely to give his staff more money if he has plenty' which sadly doesn't actually reflect the reality of the business world. Also you are putting your fingers on the scale in your example, by talking about 'a fair amount'. Who exactly gets to decide what a fair amount is, the business owner?

With a minimum wage in place, there is very little room to squeeze downwards, and what room there is should already have been squeezed simply by good business practices. This is where a large part of the myth comes from. Businesses do not have the freedom to simply cut staff at will, staff are an essential part of the operation in the first place. If you can cut staff without damaging your productivity (and thus your profit margin) then you should have done that already regardless of any tax considerations.
You’re challenging my points as though I support Right Wing Politics. I’m a socialist.

But you need to accept that the principles work in a small controlled economic environment.

They were not written, nor would they be written in 2020.

You’re probably every bit as bright as I am.

I work with many a Tory. All lovely. All believe that if they have more, they can help more.

It’s an idea that I can understand. But it has no rules. If I gave 10% of my money to charity every year, then lose my job, I leave that hole in the Charity too. They should not be reliant on me and my job security.

Take a bit more from all those with too much. Give it to those that don’t have enough.

It creates noise. But not problems. It’s all noise.

Also : I get blinded by the lights too. Successful people impress me. But they cease to impress me when they put themselves and their needs significantly above wider society.

I believe that the individual tax (67%) is only for people who earn more than 400K USD (and it starts only after the first 400K USD are taxed as they do right now).
That sounds reasonable to be honest.

Yeah the tax loopholes in the US are insane. Blows my mind reading about Amazon and Netflix paying less taxes than your average joe.

Most modellers are expecting 160m+ turn out, or 67% of the pool of eligible voters, which would make it the highest turnout since the election of 1900.
I remember it well. As I recall the biggest issue concerned the controversial levels of imported Canadian flour. Hence the main slogan of the Republicans back then was "Make American Cake Again"

Yup.

The ultra-rich should be taxed heavily, and even more important, the loopholes should be closed. Netflix paid less in federal taxes than the yearly Netflix subscription.
Well NOW you got me fired up. Especially after the brats just raised the price of its plans again.

Perhaps they want to pay more tax, and had to raise the subscription to keep it in line with their new payment. :smirk:

A mod could get this on topic again.
No need imo. We're all shitposting out of nerves probably. Not much more to say at this point until the polls are mostly open. If somebody has a question or comment, loads of people here who can answer.

Not in a Taliban or ayatollah format. I want a Pakistani government to have Islamic principles - not religious tyranny.

Unfortunately people automatically assume islamic govt =r eligious tyranny.
Dude, his point was about your views on mixing religion and politics. Nothing to do with Taliban, Ayatollah or Islamic tyranny...not sure where you got that from.

This trickle down bullshit has no place in this thread. I guess nothing interesting happens for 10h+ but still.

If this is true then Biden has a very solid lead over Trump. Clinton had around a 100k vote lead going into 2016 election day.

Really? I would have thought with Democrats probably way more inclined to vote early/not in person that Biden's lead would need to be further at this point. We'll see. All depends on today's voting turn out.

I've always been curious as to why there's a mild partisan divide between the two Carolinas. Is that down mostly to demographics?
North Carolina has way more large universities than we do, has several more decently sized cities, including Charlotte, and the mountains of NC have a very left leaning population.

The mountains of NC is interesting in that it’s always been very different from the rest of NC going all the way back to the slavery era & civil war.

edit: damn, just saw @Raoul had beat me to it

People should rather blame Congress and the Trump administration for not closing the loopholes while drafting the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, rather than Netflix for taking advantage of it.

Have a feeling Biden is going to win and Trump is going to refuse to leave office. Would be befitting of the man and also of the year 2020.

Does anyone have a reliable website that updates the counting in "real time"? I'd prefer to follow something like that as opposed to being psyched out by clickbait headlines from the online newspapers

Stupid question probably but is this a national holiday in the USA, considering the long waiting times in most places?

D actually lost a tiny bit of edge from VBMs + early with Monday update in FL, current difference is 115,461.

1.962m NPA have voted, with a roughly 10% edge in VBM to in-person, Dems lead at the moment is probably around 300k, give or take anywhere between 10-20k on either direction, depends on how NPAs break.

I have relative confidence in Biden winning this with ease.

Had a punt on him taking Florida, and i think he wins Pennsylvania 4%+.

I was actually watching a Trump rally earlier and a reporter asked one woman in the crowd what she’s gonna do if Biden wins and she said something along the lines of ‘I’m not having it!’ and me and my mum were like...what are you gonna do storm the White House

Other news websites will offer the same. But the thing is that looking at the total count is pointless, and even sometimes looking at a certain state is misleading. There are people who are very dedicated to figuring out the events as the vote unfolds, and they are employed by the networks. So it's not worthless to watch CNN, especially when they're just offering commentary on the votes so far and interpretation of it. Ignore when it goes to the pundit desk.

Cheers. I have access to CNN International and I assume they will be airing the original feed so I might just stick to that.

Trump is a very fat old man so I'm sure he's physically very tired after the last few weeks.

But he didn't sound like a man confident of victory there to me. Picking stupid fights with Fox News

Also these are statutory rates aren't they? So this number is before loopholes, deductions, and any kind of offsets. I remember reading somewhere that the effective tax rate drops to the low 50s after all those are taken into account.
