I missed the game so this is the first time I've seen it.

I cannot fathom how anyone could think that is a red card  I was expecting a follow through whereby he plant his studs mid-shin for a potential leg breaker.
It's a stupid thread about a banal tackle. Basically.

People caring more about the commentary surrounding the act and painting their opinion than looking at it like a sane person.

Clear red card. It was clear Maguire lost head after being assaulted by Pickford moments before.
Hard to blame him tbh.

The cnut shouldn’t have been playing after his challenge a couple of weeks back.

Great challenge by Maguire

Don't listen to the commentary by Jim Beglin. It was a great tackle and it was not a follow through. How on Earth is he supposed to stop his foot the moment it hits the ball? It is utterly ridiculous.

I cannot believe people think he should get a red for that. If they do they just hate Maguire and Utd or are either an Everton fan, trolling, totally soft, or never played football.

Good tackle. Nothing wrong with it at all, got the ball, barely touched the player. Nothing excessive about it. If that's a red then both Pickford and Keane get reds. I think it was Coleman that tackled Bruno, he also gets a red. Doucoure gets one for rattling into McTominay.

The real problem with these scenarios is the late flag. Flag goes up - no tackle no debate.

Hmm, that's a close one, but I think a red card would have been harsh.

I would like to see the reaction in here if it was the other way around. I think we know how that story would go...

Can you imagine how some of these people would have reacted watching a Wimbledon v Man Utd game back in the day?

Contact is part of the game, if you get cleaned out after somebody has won the ball off you then you have to just deal with it unless it's a ridiculously dangerous challenge e.g. knee high studs up full force.

Any rational football observer wouldn’t even call it a yellow. It was a good tackle. There’s only a reaction in here because a lot of our fans don’t like Maguire.

I think it would be much of the same. Digne was unfortunate to get hurt in the challenge but that can happen, it was a 50/50 and Maguire got the ball.

There was the Martial/Keane incident where Martial got hit and kicked in the face, bad as that looked I don't think anyone would've been seriously asking for a red there.

Good tackle, had a great game as well. Lindelof got bullied a bit by Calvert-Lewin in the air but Maguire was a rock at the heart of the defence today.

MOTD didn't even look at it. That tells you all you need to know given how they're usually crying about any decision going in our favour.

We had a guy that demolished VVD knee by being reckless round house kick Maguire in the box and not get a penalty. Maguire won his ball.

what’s this debate about? Weird thread

He won the ball but I don't think he entered that challenge with an excessive amount of force, nor was he reckless or out of control. It was a firm challenge at most, and he played the ball. His foot was low, didn't go in with both feet, his studs aren't up his shin, he gets the ball before catching Digne, he's not gone through him to get it.

If it was the other way around and an Everton player got sent off and/or we got a penalty (taking the offside out of the hypothetical equation) I would think we got incredibly lucky.

I don't think Pickford on Maguire is a penalty either, since he gives Pickford a nudge first, but I don't know if that's why it wasn't given. Referee gave a goal kick and not a free kick before the VAR check so he probably didn't see it.

Would be interested to know the age ranges of the people saying red or no red. If that’s a red, we’re basically at the point of not being able to slide tackle.

I think Maguire was a little lucky here, he got the ball first but took the player out....if it wasn’t offside, the referee would have had a big decision to call...but beforehand Maguire was kicked by Pickford and a defender in the midriff, that could easily have been a Penalty as well.

Wimbledon were a big part of the reason the game looked to move away from players attempting numerous career ending tackles.
But we’ve now got an issue with a bunch of cnuts who basically go around throwing themselves on the ground to get their fellow pros banned. Everton made numerous crunching tackles on our players, Rashford, Martial, Maguire and Bruno all received tackles from Everton players, where they only made physical contact with the player and no where near the ball. But the topic of discussion is Maguire clearly playing the ball after an Offside had been called.
Why no mention of the numerous fouls on Bruno by Coleman? It seems to me he kicked him every chance he got.

No attempt was made to play the ball by Pickford and he got nowhere near the ball, it was a penalty. Had Maguire booted Digne in the groin area and got nowhere near the ball and no penalty given, then I’d understand a thread being made.

It was a perfectly timed tackle, got the ball, cameras can see that, you get the ball or you don't, the ferocity of the tackle is irrelevant.
the rules say excessive force is a foul

whether or not this was excessive force is debatable, but taking the ball doesn't instantly rule out foul play

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

Personally I'd still have no problem with it. Just like I didn't have a problem with the Everton defender (Keane?) with the forearm and boot to Martial's face as it was obviously accidental as Martial's contact took him off balance, and I think the incident in the Everton penalty area should have been an Everton freekick as the only reason the ball remained contested is because Maguire reached out and pushed Pickford in the chest as he was catching the ball. I do think Pickford should have got a yellow for what happened afterwards though (it wasn't bad enough to be a red).

believer that Sancho will turn it around
If that's given a penalty in a no offsides situation then the game is gone. He's going for the ball as is Digne. Both are committing to the challenge and Maguire wins the ball first. The contact after is more forceful from Maguire because he won the challenge.

Again, if that's a penalty then this is just an entirely different sport than I have believed.

I think there won't be penalty because whistle is off. But he may still get a red, even if he touch the ball. For argument let's imagine if he break the person leg with reckless challenge, while still touching the ball, would he be able to get away from it?

It's not about how we would have reacted, it's about what the rules are and how they are interpreted. A lot of challenges are fouls now that wouldn't have been 30 years ago. It's not about you being a hardman and other people being soft, it's about you not knowing the rules. If this was 1990 I would say that the tackle was perfectly fine, but it's not 1990. Today the tackle is borderline as an absolute best, if you think a tackle is legal as long as you touch the ball below knee height they you just don't know the rules.

snip.....Also, this somehow ended with a foul against Martial.
Could not understand and never will understand that, he gets whacked twice, first with an arm to the face then a kick to the head and a foul was given against him. Even judging that Martial lept with his arm slightly out towards the Everton player, it was Martial who got clobered aggressively, its mind buggling that referees get such decisions so badly wrong.

Re Maguire, its the fact his momentum take him into the Everton player that some people are saying its a penalty (if it hadnt been offside). Judged solely as a tackle, I wouldnt say its a great tackle as he superbly positioned himself to be able to get more contact of the ball then what he actually did and the fact that he "skewed" it then took out the Everton player is why some people are deeming that as a yellow card.

If he had made perfect contact with the ball, there is more of an argument that he was in "full control" of his actions, rather than "out of control".

Personally, if I was an Everton fan, would have been unhappy with the tackle as Maguire had gone in it to the tackle without caring what happens to Digne, just simply wanted to get the ball.

As a Manchester United fan, im happy that our captain is so committed and would have been anxious waiting to see if a penalty was going to be given against us if it wasnt offside...

No, in a lot of instances touching the ball with your leg low will not be a foul. In some instances it will be. It's not a very complicated concept.
Can you tell me which instances it will and which ones it will not?

More of the same, please.

He needs to cover himself with tattoos to look hard and then act hard. He's too clean and nice for a defender. I suggest he hires Keano as a personal motivator.

This is 50/50 in my book. He got the ball yes - but he went through the player afterwards and it could be considered reckless play.

But Bruno should have been sent off. The Maguire one would have been a penalty, if not for the a picture showing Maguire pushing Pickford with a straight arm before the latter dropped the ball.

No, of course not, what kind of question is that? There are infinite amounts of possible tackles, it's impossible to make a list.
