Great win, like old times. I stay off the forum during matches as the comments raise my blood pressure so I'll have to imagine what it was like at half time. I appreciate jeffthered having a different view but I would disagree with the idea that we did not play well. Watching it as objectively as possible (not easy as a fan) I felt that for most of the first half we were playing decently. Our passing was quick and more accurate than usual, we maneuvered ourselves out of crowded awkward positions well, and I thought we should have had at least one goal. Had we drawn, I still think I would have been satisfied with the performance.
The TV crew here at half-time seemed to be watching a different match, but they would likely agree with jeffthrered's post. United were apparently poor and Soton were all over us. Hum...that really was not what I saw. I felt they got lucky with their goals. The first was annoyingly predictable...in fact, so was the second. Maguire was livid and rightly so with the weak jumps of those at front. We all knew it was going to happen but it was not until the second half that we managed to deal with this type of corner. Commentators saying poor de Gea was boxed in but what difference would it have made if he was not - he never comes out for crosses anyway. The free-kick, he might also have done better, I feel. Great shot stopper usually but a bit weak under pressure from opponents.
I agree with whoever said W-P should have been off for the persistent fouling but generally, I did not feel Soton were as threatening or overwhelming as they can be and as I expected to see them do today - we seemed all over them instead. So we concede predictable set piece goals but otherwise seemed to have a grip on the game. And Cavani...well, it's all been said. Class is forever and he has it. Don't think he can start every game but that's ok, he brings such movement when he's there I hope the others can learn from him. Today, I think Ole can be satisfied, and we should be too.
