He’s pretty awful at defending the back post on crosses isn’t he. Needs to be 1v1 with his man or he’s all over the place. Seems he’s being targeted by good coaches who know how to get their players to exploit his defensive weaknesses. He can be brilliant in certain types of games and against certain types of players. Ole needs to get some competition for him, how I wish Laird could stay fit and would be given a chance.

UK, hun?
What do you we’d get for him if we decided to sell?
Like @saivet said, £30m if we're lucky unfortunately. Even smaller teams tend to play with more attacking-minded fullback's nowadays; Brighton have Lamptey, Everton have Digne, Saints have KWP etc. I can't really see where he goes. Wan-Bissaka is a massive throwback. Whether we can shift him or not is one thing, replacing him or at least giving him some genuine competition is a necessity. It's actually mental that we haven't signed a suitable RB or RW in like a fecking decade. Valencia the last one for either position? Beggars belief.

I would like to see if he can improve under another manager. However, given that OGS wont leave soon, then I have no hope for the lad. He has not improved at all and by the summer he ll be seen as deadwood.

The thing is though, the type of clubs that can spend 30m on a fullback are the ones who are going for the top 4 or so. And like you said, those type of clubs have no intention of having someone as limited as AWB.

AWB would be suitable for a club like West Ham, but there's no way those clubs pay that much for a FB. If they have that kind of money to spend it'll go on a forward or potentially a CB (i.e. position in their core that's alt more game influencing).

In following United for over 25 years, it’s always been our weakest position, we’ve never had any world beaters in there - Parker, Neville, Brown, Rafael, Valencia, and now Wan Bissaka, with the likes of P. Neville, O’Shea, Fabio, Darmian and Young helping out at times. I fecking yearn for a beast in that position.

Everyone knew that AWB was just a defensive full back.
No attacking output...

He reminds me of Darmian.
1 good first month and then opposite teams indentified him as one of the weak links that don't respond well to the press (& horrible technique)

It's so frustrating when we look at the defence and we can't say with confidence that any of them are the pick.

This problem goes back 3 managers, they've somehow got it wrong each time.

Perhaps it's time to go for an out and out superstar and then try a "he'll develop into a good player" in midfield or attack.

He obviously had a bad game in both ends, but I don't understand some of the comments. While he obviously is struggling three vs one offensively and in the sort of lopsided slow build up where he gets the ball with no space in front of him, I'm not sure what we expect him to do. It's not like he wouldn't run if he had the space, it's not as if he isn't overlapping or making runs. It's just that not much is going on in terms of play down that right side and this is nothing new. We had a month or less with Valencia, Herrera and Mata where they actually worked really good. After it I haven't seen anything. I wouldn't expect Bissaka to solve this issue on his on, considering we have no right wing and Bruno plays more through the left. McTominay, Matic or Mata isn't going to create a good dynamic and balance with him going forward. On an individual note, I have seen him do a lot of good things on occasion when he is not out numbered.

I think we need to be patient with him. He is the same age as Rashford.

I feel that his defensive issues can be trained, like his awful positioning. Maybe more difficult with the offensive issues. His ball handling when he has the ball under control is not too bad imo, but his first touch is awful.

Agreed it can certainly be coached but his lack of instinctive defensive awareness is more difficult. Better positioning can mask that but the lack of certain traits is a worry in the long term.

It actually never ceases to amaze me how little he offers going forward.
I live in Malmö so I support MFF as well. We have a right back who can cross and scores great goals with both feet. He might not be as good at defending as AWB but to be honest he would not have done any worse last night. I have no clue what our scouting department were thinking.

He is the “top 3 pick NFL running back”, a callback to a different age. He is not very press resistant and his best attribute is his recovery tackles AKA being out of position. That said, I expect with a different setup he can be very effective. But I think that setup is something like a Steve Bruce side

I really like Aaron, I think he's largely been a positive signing for the club and am happy to have him. He was very poor last night, and looked lost in the demands of the position he was playing. He's a young lad who is playing every week and I think the club would benefit from having an alternative option in the RB slot, perhaps that more offensive player we are looking for, maybe Dalot comes back from Milan a more developed player.

He has been our biggest weak link defensively recently. Poor judgement of when to track the runner and when to hold position, constantly out of position, terrible instincts defending crosses in the box, and non existent communication. That's not a defensive fullback but a helpless fullback. Teams have exploited it with relative ease.

To throw a firecracker into the mix: Wan-Bissaka is a bigger liability in defence than he is in the possession/attacking phase.

AWB has been poor since restart of football.. seems like another case where the player thinks he has made it. His limitations as footballer is getting exposed more and more and one saving grace which was his defending is also regressing. We should look for an upgrade on both RB and Lb and cut our losses. That's what a top team would do but we are "giving chances to mediocre player" club, so we are stuck with Fullbacks who can't attack and defend.

Having rewatched much of the match, Wan-Bissaka's performance is even worse than I thought on first viewing.

Going into the match, Angelino was Leipzig's top scorer in the Bundesliga with 4 goals and joint 2nd best for assists, 3rd for key passes. In the CL he was also their top scorer with 2 goals and had the most assists (2).

So Wan-Bissaka decided to leave him completely free time after time. Leipzig's main tactic was to play the ball wide, normally towards Angelino, though sometimes to the right, as soon as possible.

Angelino scored, got an assist for Haidara's goal, put in the cross that got deflected resulting in their third goal, created their big chance for Forsberg who shot narrowly wide, had another shot from an angle that he didn't get a good connection so an easy save for De Gea.

Then there was the bizarre attempted backheel when Wan-Bissaka got pressed by several Leipzig players, that resulted in Shaw conceding an unnecessary corner, that led to them hitting the post and then the goal that was disallowed for offside.

Unbelievable.

I wouldnt sell Wan Bissaka- maybe we overpayed for him, but if we can have an attacking RWB/RB competing with Wan Bissaka's tackling ability I'd be happy with that balance of two different styles.
This

The lad will burn out with the expectation and physical demands of playing every game. He needs a break and we should have an adequate back up to provide not only competition but take him out of the firing line now and again.

PS: Williams is crap and nowhere near good enough

Yeah, and I hope I'm not jumping the gun here - I'm not one of those fans who saw that Shaw was quite a good crosser before his injury under Van Gaal - however even though it was only 2 or 3 games, I felt that Telles's crossing ability may have bought something out of Shaw's.

I'd like to see if we can get Wan Bissaka's attacking play to improve in a similar way and if not then we still have an attackingRWB competing with him.

Didn’t he say after his belter at Newcastle that the coaches told him to get forward? Wonder why he’s reverted back to being solely defensive

Exactly this - he's still young. I still believe he will be our long term RB. Players improve so quickly in their early twenties, this is the key time for him to develop - look how much better Reece James looks this season defensively compared to last.

Our defence is always very exploitable - Brighton played that same ball against the back 4 about 5 times when we played them and hit the woodwork a stupid amount of times. AWB has clearly been asked to tuck in out of possession - if this wasn't the case why is Lindelof always the wrong side of his man? It's a clear tactical decision, most likely to cover for us having two relatively slow CBs and a keeper who loves his line.

Thing is he is not even good at defensive anymore when we need him to be against decent teams.

Weird that we signed a player like that. But, still young so hopefully he can be coached. Whether we have good enough coaches for this is another matter.

our lack of a genuine right sided attacker only highlights his attacking limitations. one on one we know he's good, recovery tackle is excellent, but his positioning is suspect and often times his excellent recovery tackling is because of his initial poor positioning. We know he can a do a defensive job, we've seen it against Sterling so I'm not prepared to write him of just yet but until we get a right sided player I feel we will keep having this issues. The commentator in the Soton game actually pointed out during that spell when they were on top that neither VDB or Greenwood were tracking back so he was getting overloaded on that side. No mater who we shoehorn into that right side, be it Greenwood, Mata etc they don't offer any defensive cover. It's tough that we don't genuinely have any competition for that position, maybe Williams as a right back to see what he can do. I feel for sure AWB starts v City though due to previous good showings against them

A defensive fullback who can’t defend. He gets worse and worse every game and is one of the worst fullbacks in the league. His ability on the ball is just straight up laughable. He has no position. Has no awareness. Can’t track a runner to save his life and is absolutely useless aerially. If he is in a 1v1 duel, he’s the worst player at the club. Genuinely absolute shit unless it is 1v1. That isn’t good enough.

And to make matters worse, for such an extremely limited player he is constantly lazy and doing stupid things. Trying backheels or jogging back without a care in the world. When you’re incapable of doing anything properly then at least work your butt off. McTominay is bang average and incredibly limited, so he works his ass off and plays to his limitations. AWB tried stupid shit and then just strolls around as the man gets the run on him again.

We’re going nowhere with him. And people think he can play CB or CM. Lad can’t even play RWB ffs. Struggles to even play RB these days.

Let's not overreact and look at Wan Bissaka overall as a player.

Age; 23

Mental attributes

- Seems to lack confidence. I think the lack of crowds has hurt him. If his tackles were being cheered by the crowd it gives him encouragement.
- Is aggressive and committed. Tries hard and wants to win.
- Doesn't cause trouble
- Lacks leadership skills. Needs direction and instruction both from the coach and on the pitch. We lack leadership in this regard
- Needs to be more positionally aware and avoid being too narrow. This should be easily coachable

Physical attributes

- Is quick and strong
- Has good stamina
- Isn't very strong in the air but OK for a full back
- Is very agile

Technical attributes

- Passing can be imprecise, including at short range
- Very right footed, avoids using left foot
- First touch is variable and can let him down
- Has some flair and decent creative vision, there's a hint of a street footballer in him
- Has the occasional trick to beat a man, but lacks the confidence / technique to try this often. Has the acceleration and pace to move past an opponent if he times his runs well
- Crosses fairly well; the issue is not so much his crossing itself but rather getting into the position to cross

Form

Variable. We've seen some excellent performances from him (PSG away, City last season) as well as some stinkers. He's still one of our more consistent players, but his floor on poor performances can be extremely low.

I'd like to see what he can do with better coaching. For me that means;

- Being much more aware of threats on the outside. This should be easily fixed with the right coaching.
- Focus on one touch passing / one twos to advance up the flank. He's much more comfortable playing like this than trying to skin players from a standing start. We need quick passing triangles up the right flank. Our overeliance on playing on the left is also a tactical flaw of ours

I suspect that if we did sell him there would be takers on the continent. I could see a Spanish or Italian coach building him into a pretty formidable right back. He's a raw talent, and one that needs much more direction.

I read an article where AWB gave an interview which has really got me thinking, he will not be a great defender for us.

He came out and said he hated defending when he was younger, makes me will he ever really make it?

You can see it in his game, his positioning in game is very poor, his reading of the game is non existent. Even when we are getting broken on the counter attack, his desire to get back is not there.

Now, we cannot go and buy another RB, so I am hoping a defensive coach can get him motivated or someone like a Laird to come through.

That’s awful, why isn’t he busting a gut to snuff out the danger?
He does this in every game though, its not something new with AWB. Yet when fit he starts every game. Its complacency, knowing your position is guaranteed in the starting line up.

We need to hire defensive coaches that look at these things, alot of the times when defending, our players are jogging back or out of position.

To be fair everyone rides Greenwoods cock when he provides no defensive stability to Wan Bissaka's channel either

Both guys need a manager to smack their arses to get them to work harder and to work as a unit.

so because he said he hated defending when he was younger, thats it?

He will never be world class, but with excellent coaching (which is all he needs imo), it will be impenetrable. Minimal on offense but can be solid on D. But as with cafe, make one mistake and you're slated to no end
