Confidence and match rhythm is at an all time low for him, but the profile of player he is doesn't really fit. He's a cog in a system midfielder; moulded in the Ajax style. We're a side of individual brilliance and off-the-cuff magic.

When Rashford was running through the middle, instead of attempting high reward low percentage pass, he opted to pass back to Mata with a snappy 1-2 and to push play forward like that.
Another problem is he lacks the technical side we're used to from an Ajax player.

From "why is he not starting" after every game to "he's shit" at the drop of a hat.

That's caf for ya.
I think he should be starting for us but as an 8.
He has attributes to develop into a great number 8 but as a 10 he is an absolutely useless player.

He should run. Those 10 min shifts will never lead to anything. Most of the time the match is done so there's no chance he can do anything.

Doesn't matter if he's being ignored because he's not Ole's signing or that he's not good enough. This is not doing anything good for him and his career.

Besides that, some fans like to judge a player on only 1 moment. So yeah this won't do him any good.
Well actually he had a big chance to put Rashford through, just didn't take it. Obsessed with not losing the ball.

That's generous in the extreme, it was an incredibly routine through ball into absolutely acres of space. If he doesn't have the ability to make that pass it's at least as worrying as the fact he didn't seem to even see it.

Woeful when he came on. Can’t understand why Ole won’t play him deeper again.

Yeah I think even AWB would've attempted that ball and might've had a chance to get it through, that's how easy it was.

That's what I'm saying -- that's just the type of player he is, though. He's feels like an LvG possession robot with how he shifts the ball.

I wouldn't have liked to have seen him play deeper with the way Sheffield United were finishing that match. No way.

It wasn’t even a difficult pass though. There was acres of space to play it into. Just wants to play safe.

He is not a 10.

But if he’s going to play as a 10 he needs to take a leaf out of Bruno’s book and go looking for the ball instead of always waiting for the ball to come to him.

He’s got the technical talent to makes things happen, give him time.

Was really poor when he came on. Needs to start hitting longer passes.

He isnt a creator from CAM, he finds space and finishes chances -

Either Ole is waiting for the right moment to bring him in to the team (my opinion is when players like Martial and Pogba may one day leave so VDB can play almost as further forward as a false CF whilst he can cover CM as well) or he is not his player which is weird because he still was trying Daniel James a whole lot more when he was Giggs's player.

Seems like a quick pass and move merchant who needs a lot of momevemnt around him. Doesn’t seem to have the composure and the vision to hold on to the ball and play people in. Seems like a fish out of water.

Harsh I know because the lad has hardly got a look in.

So...2-3 missed chances by Rash and Martial, poor defending for the 2nd goal, 2 mistakes by Henderson but "VdB almost cost us the game"...ok I give up on this.

An 8 doesn’t really need to spray the ball long.
Well depends who the third midfielder is. If it's Matic or McTominay they do. Hence why it's Pogbas responsibility.

If we get a 6 who can take that responsibility then you are correct. But right now we don't have a number 6 than can pass long and switch the play etc.

In a midfield 3 either the 6 or 8 has to be able to play accurate long balls. Helps if your CBs are good at it too.

Our squad as it stands requires the 8 to do it.

he’s not athletic so why do we play him higher up the pitch? He’s somebody who excels in tight areas. stupid playing him as a 10 in a stretched match.

to be fair that last 10 minutes was a bit scrappy and he didn’t really get into it.

Ajax was the perfect environment for him with all the technical and creative people around him. He's just not that special. A slightly better Davy Klaassen.

He's showed in flashes this season that he can become an important player for Man Utd.
I think he'll eventually do a Fred and go from flop to top. But we might not see consistency from him till next season.

It doesn't help that some ex Dutch player/manager is in the media every day saying he made a huge mistake choosing Man Utd.

Sadly that was the worst i've seen him play so far. Very timid and even his decision making was off too.

Definitely not feeling the love right now it seems. Big shame. :(

Was poor today. Should've helped finish the game with a ball to Rashford. We've seen him do well as a press resistant 8 so that's how he should develop.

Desperately needs to slow down and take two touches instead of one when unmarked and add some long passes to his game; not spectacular ones like Pogba's, just simple side switching passes will do. Right now he's playing tiki taka with teammates that play direct football, needs to sort it out. He will undoubtedly get game time as the fixtures pile up, hope he makes the most of his chances.

It's just classic mismanagement. He doesn't get into the starting lineups, and sometimes doesn't make it onto the pitch. When he does make it on, it's only for a few minutes. When he does make it on, it's debatable whether or not Ole is putting him in the right position. A lot of people are saying he should be played further back, which I agree with.

He could have had an amazing 10 minutes and he would still be on the bench for the next game. I think we're underestimating just how tricky it is to come on so late on into a game and have an impact. Some players thrive on that, especially if you're a striker running at a tired defence or coming on to get a goal when you're 1-0 down. In other cases, it doesn't always work out that way.

A nothing player. Doesn’t matter if you are a 8 a 10 or a 6, a decent player would have seen the run and played the through ball. Not really impressed with him so far

The way people came here and said he is not a no 10 like it is ok for him to not perform basic shit in a game. Does he need to be a fecking no 10 to do that pass though?

Donny can't deal with being on the bench and playing a few minutes here and there? Is he mentally that weak?

What gives him the right to be an automatic starter?
