Weren't 8 senators expelled from the Senate in 1861 when they refused to accept Lincoln's victory?

Shouldn't the same happen here? And could it?
It should happen from an ethical point of view, but it won't happen. What they are doing is not unconstitutional, it is totally in their (legal) right to do so.

The way to remove senators is to impeach them in the house, and remove them with 2/3 in the senate. As far as I know, there are no other mechanisms of doing so (maybe recalling them, but that is even more undoable).

So in theory turtle Mitch, if he's really pissed off, could convince enough GOP'ers to impeach the lot and kick them out if he wanted? I bet the Dems wouldn't mind.

Would it call for a new election of the seats? I guess that might be risky.

Just want to find votes...unbelievable.
I have enormous respect for how Raffensperger has handled this.
On listening to the audio, absolutely no doubt he has dementia.

Only House can impeach (it requires simple majority) and only Senate can remove (requires supermajority).

So, no. He cannot do that. If one party controls 2/3 of senate and also the House, then in theory, they can do so.

Four minutes is no fair. Give us the full unedited hour!
On Twitter there’s a fair few MAGA geniuses claiming that Trump has done nothing wrong & the editing is making it seem worse. They should release the full recording, if not for the laughs then to mute out these conspiracy nutters.

And I'm all out of bubblegum.
If I were an American, I'd be scared. Raffensperger refused to steal the election for Trump, when asked personally, and no doubt many others have as well. But he's not a Trumpian Republican. We've already seen how many state representatives and even members of Congress who are willing to question the legality of the election, and there's a new crop of GOP politicians and functionaries coming up who are more like those than Raffensperger. That this has failed - is failing - isn't proof that America's democracy is strong. If anything it's proof that it's weak, because of how it failed. Admittedly it would still have to pass courts, but you've got federal judges out there who are Trumpian too, and if it comes to that the Supreme Court has no capability to enforce a ruling anyway.

A coup in the US isn't going to come by tanks in the streets of DC. It's going to come by the gradual erosion of Democratic norms, and that's already well underway. Not enough for Trump to steal this election, but you've got to wonder what things are like in 8 or 12 years. I'm not as optimistic as for example @GlastonSpur about the inevitable demise of the GOP.

The republicans have also locked themselves into large swaths of this country due to gerrymandering. If a majority of these districts potentially become Trumpian in the next couple of elections, that could be a tipping point for their party. I could see it going either way - slow motion, yet effective coup or the bifurcation of the Republican Party.

So we got a personal look at what Trumpism can do to a family.

- My Trump voting SIL, who also happens to be a COVID Nurse, doesnt want to get the vaccine because she is afraid of what's in it.
- She enabled my evangelical, Trumper, BIL (her brother) by telling him to not bother getting tested before coming home for Christmas.
- Her reason? "There is too much testing and it inflates the number of people who think they have COVID."
- Said BIL did bother to inform anyone he was not feeling well.
- Said BIL has now tested positive for COVID.
- As has my MIL and FIL.
- My MIL just had back surgery, which meant my wife traveled out of state to take care of her.
- This is the first time we had broke our own isolation in 10 months.
- My wife now has COVID and we are isolating from each other for 2 weeks.

To say I am angry is to say that the ocean has some water. These people were always selfish, but they are sheeple and would have likely followed whatever their dear leader had said.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that but that's also a very important point. The GOP has a death-grip on many state governments and legislatures (and court systems, probably). 2020 wasn't only a failure for the Dems in the House and the Senate (even if they control the former and might end up controlling the latter), it was a huge failure on the state level. The GOP now largely has control of the redistricting which will last for the next 10 years.

Yep. Just like with the idiot judges, it’s going to be at the state level where real havoc is created by the Trumpians.

I'm guessing this latest call will be the perfect excuse an incoming AG needs to launch a full inquiry into the Trump admin. They could at least drag Trump's ass in front of a hearing/court and force him to face questions under oath. There's no way he won't commit perjury if he's going to repeat all his daily lies.

fecking hell man, I hope your wife makes a speedy recovery, I don’t even know what to say about your extended family. It’s astonishing that she’s a nurse.

thank you both. My wife is shattered right now. We/she did everything right. We made so many personal sacrifices, for almost a year and it has all been undone by a single moment of kindness meeting selfishness and ignorance and losing.

He not evenly remotely worth it as long as everyone makes it out of this unscathed. Besides, my FIL is angry enough now that I foresee a Will revision happening shortly. Getting an inheritance is the only reason that shit has even the limited contact with his family he does. I've said it before, but I will repeat it now: the worst people I know in my everyday life are all "devout christians".

Can we even call it a Presidency anymore? We should call it The Trump regime. Or the American regime.

In public Trump makes wild and repeated allegations of vote-rigging.

In private, Trump has been caught on tape calling on officials to rig the Georgia result in his favour.
